Hmm. I'm not fan of this government, but I don't agree with that. The UK is standing by Ukraine diplomatically and providing it with direct military support - so we are acting and to a greater extent that any other major European nation. France essentially declaring that Ukraine should become a neutral buffer zone (which is no way, shape or form a decision for France, NATO or any other country other than Ukraine to make) was appalling. I'm not sure the way to counter Putin's aggression is to start giving him what he wants - he isn't going to give you a nice pat on the back for that.

Let's criticise this government for what it is getting wrong, which is many things, but backing the sovereignty of an ally against a foreign aggressor that appears incapable of being reasoned with isn't something we should be damning it for in my view.

To be fair I was being flippant and generalising.

You're right about those things, but let's not ignore the fact that we've got people like Liz Truss, Nadine Torries and Rees Mogg representing us on the world stage. You have to say things might work better if there was a different government in place doing the same things.

Truss seems to be treating the whole thing as a photo opportunity which undermines any positive impact we might be having.

I don't disagree with that at all - I think the decision of the UK as a government / state is correct here, but it's a shame the actors on behalf of the UK aren't different. Most of them, intellectually, aren't up to the job.
 
Sky News we’re stirring it all up last night stating that Russia were doing joint military exercises with Belarus on the Ukrainian border, and that six war ships were heading to the Black Sea :eyes:

Also worth noting that it's parliamentary recess this week which MPs usually spend mostly in their constituencies, and collective opinion can usually turn quite drastically in that time. And this is probably due to come to a head after they get back. So we could be on for a vote of no confidence week of the 21st.

Well maybe not Cameron. He might actually still be the most incompetent of them all

There is one slight different factor here though at least vs Thatcher and May - I'm not sure during their downfalls there was ever anywhere near as much meta-gaming by Tory MPs over whether or not it was a 'bad time for a new PM to come in' or anything like that. One of the things that's protected Boris is that none of the possible successors has either pulled the plug, or really overwhelmingly impressed the parliamentary party as a whole much. But the other is that the government is basically going to have to eat a lot of shit whatever happens for the next few months anyway.

I can't remember but wasn't Major sleaze? I thought he resigned because his position was untenable. Similar with Cameron, he did so much damage that he jumped before it got too messy.

Major resigned because he lost a general election! It was untenable, but in about the most traditional sense possible. He lasted about as long as he could've ever potentially done from the outset really.
