OMG! This is them at the peak of their sibling dysfunction and basically nobody and everybody is in the wrong. I honestly think that “You’re a liar and sick and an alcoholic” is one of the best ever lines because it’s 100% true in way reality tv is rarely ever that truthful. Kim has literally outed herself as an alcoholic through the whole series basically every time she’s on screen, so I don’t really think Kyle takes it THAT far. “You stole my goddamned house” is AMAZING but it’s not totally accurate, it’s just very VERY amusing.

I don’t know why Kim gets such a pass for being a total mess. I think Kyle shows a level of profound rage and disbelief at how far gone her sister is at this point and Kim is just spouting self-medicated nonsense which is also quite cruel. I love Kim: she is an hilarious ex child star with a cocktail of addictions who has no concept of the damage she flings around and takes ZERO responsibility for. Having to pick up the pieces behind people is HARD WORK and I think Kyle just runs out of patience.

Anyway I am just really glad that this scene exists. It’s the best thing I’ve ever seen.
 
I think, so far at least, Kim hasn't really come across as all that messy? I'm aware that this will CHANGE, but showing up pissed to a party in this episode is literally the worst thing she does all season. :D Whereas Kyle is constantly shown to be gaslighting and belittling her.

I do think there's probably a lot of truth to what you say about why Kyle is the way she is, but I think she handles it incredibly badly. Kim just flat out shouldn't be on the show at all (though of course as a viewer I'm living for her every slurred utterance).
 
Well Kim is on the show because Kyle made her do it, which IS very evil genius because she obviously knew Kim wouldn’t cope. So I do think Kyle is very capable of evil - I think she just uses the same brand of evil that I do and I really enjoy it. I’m even trying to steal @Suomi ’s goddamned house in Sweden :disco:

I think your addict sister showing up pissed to a party is quite a big thing. Especially if you’ve been dealing with it most of your life.
 
I think the first two seasons of this and RHONJ are up there with the likes of The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, etc as American CLASSICS.

Season 1 Kyle was what I formed my opinion of her on, and so I've never been able to warm to her. That episode early on in the season, where you see Kyle belittling Kim in front of her kids, mocking her for not wanting her daughter to leave her for the summer - that was horrible to watch.

She's come across much more likable in later seasons of course. But season 1 Kyle, before she saw how she was coming across, that's the real Kyle.

S01E13: The Finale

Before I gave in to this show, my preconception was that the Housewives franchise would be full of failed actresses relentlessly screaming at each other in painfully inauthentic scenarios. The unexpectedly fascinating thing about this season of Beverley Hills is that that clearly is kind of the format, but the premeditated drama seem to have accidentally put some genuinely dark, bleak and real shit under the microscope. Are they all like this, or is it a unique quirk of BH? Because when I see out of context clips of, say, OC or New Jersey, they look closer to my preconceived notion of how the format would look and feel.

Long story short, I think I made the right choice to dip my toe in the waters here. There's a real narrative arc to this season which, while clumsy and definitely forced in places, is legitimately compelling, and looks to be having real-world consequences for its stars.

This whole post is such an incredible write up, and honestly nails every character perfectly. I've read so much dissection of the first two BH seasons online (they are very much a DARK and DISTURBING duo) and I do think honestly this is the best version I've consumed to date!

I do think the unexpected depth to Housewives that you mention is what pulls you in. The franchise is unexpectedly deeper than something like Jersey Shore, and when the drama is real it can be uncomfortable but also so so delicious :disco:

At some point I'd urge you to dive into New York season 3. If Beverley Hills is Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, New York is the GOLDEN GIRLS - but similar to the first two BH seasons there's some very real connections and friendships that go back years which results in all kinds of MESS :disco:
 
Oh @SANTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaAAaaaA CLAUS , that's lovely but I really am just running on your fumes. I would never even have considered looking into these shows if not for your iconic countdown thread. I haven't seen any of NJ yet, but your description of one character as 'a terrifying human turnip' makes me chuckle on pretty much a daily basis :D

I think I'll stick with BH for a little while as I want to see how all of this bleak psychodrama plays out. I assume like all reality TV, it'll jump the shark and become progressively more self aware over time, so I'm sure I'll branch out onto the other franchises at some point.
 
Anyway, I binged both reunion episodes and the lost footage special last night, so I'm ready for my final ranking of Season 1.

1. Camille
No surprise here. Apparently Kyle had to talk a hesitant Camille into joining the show, which is hilarious on multiple levels in retrospect. The reunions went SO HARD on her, but I think she came out of it with a surprising amount of grace. She's clearly hyper intelligent and a lot more self aware than she's given credit for, and you can tell she was genuinely stung by how much of a hatchet job the season 1 edit was on her. All that, and an absolute master of reality TV mind games. While the Kyle/Kim drama was compelling, it was also frequently quite grubby and depressing, whereas all of Camille's passive-aggressive antics were pure camp joy. An icon!

2. Lisa
Clearly the winner of this season in terms of landing, making an overwhelmingly positive impact and establishing yourself as a camp icon more or less overnight. I can certainly detect the shades of villainy in Lisa, but she's excelled so far as the group mother figure and de facto narrator of the show. The whole Cedric debacle was repetitive onscreen but fascinating when it all blew up between the finale and the reunion. I imagine she and Ken weren't quite as blameless as they made out, but he was obviously a serial liar and a parasite, and if they didn't in fact pay him off, it doesn't seem like he really had much of anything on them in the end.

Anyway, definitely excited for more Lisa, her ridiculous half-dead dog and her bitchy talking heads!

3. Taylor
Still such a MYSTERY to me! I feel like of all the cast, I could probably get on pretty well with Taylor IRL based on this series. She's warm, witty, and subtly much more clued up than her blown up LA Barbie Doll appearance suggests. She came off really well in the reunion, and just seems like a fundamentally nice person. The glaring exception is her family life. Obviously her marriage to the dreadful Russell is a binfire, but all the stuff with her daughter seems a bit WEIRD too. This is a very harsh read, but I almost wonder if she doesn't actually like being a mum very much? Obviously a lot of that is happening offscreen so it's difficult to get a fair read on it, but something definitely feels off. I'm intrigued to learn more!

4. Kim
Oh poor Kim. The reunion stuff between her and Kyle was really quite EMOTIONALLY DRAINING, which kind of sums up why she isn't higher. I felt a lot of empathy for her, but also came away feeling like she just needed to not be on the show. Which is a shame because for all her social awkwardness and the creeping spectre of her substance abuse issues, she had flashes of being really funny and likeable.

Much as I like them both individually, I'm still getting nothing from her feud with Taylor. Maybe it ramps up in season 2? Right now it just feels a bit inauthentic, as neither of them seem like the types to actively seek out conflict. Kim peaked elsewhere for me with her talking heads at the Dinner Party from Hell, particularly this iconic moment which I can sadly only find in potato quality.

5. Kyle
I've already given plenty of character space to my read on Kyle as the VILLAIN of Season 1, so I won't go over old ground much. Suffice to say though that there's clearly no show without her at this point, so I have to give her that. Also she seems like she is genuinely nice to her kids, and I am trying to give her the benefit of the doubt RE the obvious trauma she and Kim have shared, plus keeping an open mind to what might be happening offscreen. My biggest problem with Kyle, and it happens again at the reunion with Camille, is that when cornered she'll always zero in on absolutely the most cruel and hurtful thing that she can say. That's a really nasty impulse, and when she's called on it she just kind of shuts down. Girl needs to visit fewer mediums and more actual therapists.

6. Adrienne
*sigh*, well, she was just THERE, really, wasn't she? As I posted above, it probably speaks fairly well of her as a human being that she floated above the drama, kept her kids largely off the show and displayed real grown-up empathy when dragged into fights with others. But ultimately I think she's just too guarded to ever really shine on this format. Obviously in Season 2 they'll all be actively reacting to how they came across in Season 1, so assuming she comes back I'm interested to see if she kicks things up a notch. Right now all she's giving is hideous styling and a thirsty husband who clearly wants to be on the show more than she does.

A PERFECT read on s1 Camille in my opinion :disco:
As you mention, she's clearly hyper-intelligent - and her constant need to over-compensate to show she's NO DUMB BLONDE is so delightfully pernicious :disco:

If you can be bothered I'd urge you to tear through season 2 whilst you still have the momentum as it's very much a two-part epic.
Season 3 is less essential so you can take a breather if you wish, and by season 4 things start to fall apart completely (although season 5 is mostly a return to the GLORY of 1&2)

I never loved Camille more during the reunion than the moment when she corrected HERSELF on her use of the word 'Machiavellic/ian' and said something like "Of course we've ALL read the book about the 15th century Italian prince" :D

S02E01: Back to Beverley Hills

It's a new day in the workroom, and the ladies are back with brand new faces taglines and a year under the spotlight behind them. Will their newfound self awareness change the tone?

Taylor
I FINALLY found my voice, and I'm not afraid to use it... :eyes:
We open with Taylor going hiking with her therapist, which seems such a quintessentially LA thing to do. :D Boundaries, anybody? Dr Melfi would NEVER.

Anyway, Taylor is still working on her marriage to the dreadful Russell, who I think is the only husband we don't actually see this week. This and her growing rift with Lisa seem like it's going to be her storyline this season, and the two plots intersect nicely when Ken makes a boorish comment about therapy being for weaklings, leading to an awkward confrontation. She's still kind of playing a supporting role in her own plotline though, with Kyle taking the lead in calling Ken out, much to Lisa's annoyance.

Camille
Diamonds aren't a girl's best friend, freedom is... :disco:
Speaking of therapy, Camille seems like she's had a LOT of it since her last season, and who could blame her? With the ever present DEDE by her side, she reassures the viewers that her high maintenance days are behind her, which presumably means she's making do with just the one live-in nanny now. She largely stays out of the drama this week, although the slender premise for the group get-together is for them to watch her self-deprecating guest appearance on a DREADFUL looking network sitcom called Shit my dad says, which Wikipedia tells me was yanked from the airwaves after a single season. :D I did enjoy her delight at being the only person (bar Kim I guess) to get out of the evening unscathed.

Lisa
Life in Beverley Hills is a game, and IIIII make the rules... :horny:
In both the dinner party and her daughter's upcoming wedding, Lisa was mainly ancillary to Ken this episode, which I did not appreciate one little bit. I expect the platonic love triangle with Kyle and Taylor is going to be her big story this season, which feels a little forced but I'll keep an open mind. The saving grace was the little sub-plot of Adrienne's personal chef loathing her with every fibre of his being due to some offscreen shade she apparently threw at his cooking, which again felt quite performative, but was at least campy and fun.

Also, there was this one weird extended shot where they held on her awkwardly walking around the dinner table for about ten seconds while Adrienne stared directly into the camera with an eerily wax-like expression. It amused and baffled me in equal measure. What did it signify? Why did they leave it in? The mysteries of Bravo!

Kyle & Kim

Following the blow-out at the end of Season 1, our favourite twisted sisters remain estranged. Interestingly, Kyle is the one trying to make amends while Kim seems reluctant to forgive and forget. I like the idea of a reverse season where Kim actually has some power in their fucked up dynamic, so I'm intrigued to see where this goes. Beyond that, neither does much beyond Kyle's involvement in the Taylor/Ken spat. I did enjoy Kim randomly turning up to the dinner party looking like Tanya Tucker doing a guest judging slot on RuPaul's Drag Race though.

*Inaudible croaking* :confused:
Seriously, did she deliver her tagline using one of those throat amplifiers that lung cancer survivors use after they've lost the power of speech? I had to rewind it three times to make heads or tails of what she was saying.

Anyway UGH, Adrienne and the all-too-present Paul were a real drag on this episode. I can understand why she needed to find a way to get a bit more airtime after her underwhelming showing on season 1, but who told her that amping up the tedious MARITAL BICKERING was the way to go? It was painfully performative and felt like it took up half the episode. Giving more talking heads to the husbands than the wives is definitely not a trend that I'm here for on this show. That and wheeling in a new dog in a transparent attempt to jump on the Giggy bandwagon? SAD.
 
S02 E02 - The Ski Trip (Part 1)

Well, this took a turn! :o

The first part of this double-header is actually a really fun, low stakes hangout episode in Camille's soon-to-be sold Ski chalet at Beaver Creek :eyes:.

Camille
While I was obviously hoping for more mind game and evil psychics, I am quite liking the softer post-Kelsey Camille in this episode. She seems like she's in a good place with the other women, including Kyle, and there's a fun scene of her basically ripping Kelsey to shreds as a smelly bad kisser with a hairy back. :D (Though I did chuckle that after this scene she opens the door to the Ski instructors with a very pointed "Hi, it's Camille GRAMMAR" - not quite ready to let go of the famous name yet then!)

Lisa
Lisa vs Taylor is about as interesting to me as Taylor vs Kim was last season, and the fact that Ms Vanderpump refuses to let it go despite Taylor's best efforts doesn't reflect brilliantly on her. On the other hand, she's on good wisecracking form as usual ("Are you ready to take these creaky beavers up the mountain?" - you know she'd been sitting on that one for at least a week :D) and of course we have to mention for fabulous white witch ski ensemble.

Adrienne
As usual, she's there. The only thing I noted was yet more of the driest re-run of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf ever staged in the opening scene with Paul. I'm going to have to start fast forwarding these martial bickering scenes if they don't pick up, it's just interminable.

Kyle & Kim
Kim enters this episode seeming very hopped up on...coffee (:eyes:),which causes her to have a massive crash when she gets to the chalet. For whatever reason Kyle opts to ignore it and there are some nice good natured sisterly banter moments in this episode, although Kim indicates she's still not quite ready to move on after Kyle tries to brush over the Season 1 incident over dinner. Make the bitch beg for it Kim!

Taylor
Other than a brief rehash of the Ken argument from Episode 1, Taylor is mostly bubbly and fun this episode, UNTIL the turn. A Jacuzzi heart-to-heart with Kyle (in which, in fairness, Kyle is atypically empathetic and wise) reveals that she basically knows her marriage is over but is afraid to make the jump. She seems to be on the verge of some kind of breakthrough, and then the episode literally DEAD CUTS mid-sentence, and when we return, it's a very different show...
 
S02 E03 The Ski Trip (Part 2)

Yikes. While it lacks the high camp of the Dinner Party from Hell, the first fifteen minutes of this episode might be the most compelling Housewives I've seen so far, as Taylor's meltdown essentially breaks the show.

Following a wine-fuelled heart to heart with Kyle, she rapidly deteriorates into full blown drunken panic attack/meltdown. It's clearly very much real, and it puts the other women into an interesting position as they're forced to drop the facade and attempt to calm down their increasingly manic castmate.

Lisa comes out of this best for me. I've suspected for a while that she more than any of the others understands that she's on a TV show and controls her own narrative efficiently. Despite her previous beef with Taylor, she seems to quickly drop the housewives schtick altogether and make a sincere attempt to defuse the situation in a calm and empathetic manner. (I suspect her background running bars may also have equipped her quite well for this kind of situation).

I've credited Adrienne in the past for also being good at being an adult in conflict situations, and she has some good moments here too, quietly whispering for Taylor to stop drinking and (seemingly) protecting her from saying things on camera that she might regret. Unfortunately, she's also completely overbearing and at one point looks a disoriented Taylor right in the eyes and says THIS, which I can't imagine was in any way helpful. :D

Kyle and Kim are probably the most telling in their reactions as they both to varying degrees just try desperately to brush everything under the carpet and carry on as normal. As cringey as it was, Taylor's drunken heart to heart with Kim was very sweet, but it's clear that Kim is the least clued onto what's actually going on when it comes to the dinner table.

Kyle I actually do think has Taylor's best interests at heart here too, but she really shows her lack of emotional maturity in the way she keeps trying to smooth things out and laugh it off when the situation has clearly gone way beyond that. This classically empathetic reaction to one of her best friends having a nervous breakdown on camera spoke absolute volumes. :eyes:

Camille, hilariously, peaces out and goes to bed so she misses the whole thing. (And you KNOW she could hear everything but rolled her eyes and carried on leafing through her copy of the latest Jonathan Franzen instead of coming out to help. The house isn't *that* big and Taylor was literally screaming at points!)

When she does eventually emerge we get the tragicomic highpoint of the episode, with the poor catering staff attempting to present Camille's ludicrously over-complicated dinner while the women - including a still visibly drunk and emotional Taylor - make thousand-yard stares into the middle distance. :D

So yeah, this was a rough one for poor Taylor and my heart really bled for her. I've so been that drunken emotionally draining mess at certain points in my life. Maybe I've sensed some kind of KINDRED SPIRIT in her from the start!

What's actually going on though? There's been no on-camera Russell so far this season, but I wouldn't blame him for saying no after the absolute HATCHET job he received on the first season (not that it wasn't seemingly deserved!) There' a definite sense of the women DANCING AROUND something they don't want to say on camera - aside from poor Kim who is clearly CLUELESS. If Taylor is on the receiving end of actual domestic abuse, I'd hope even a show as cynical as this would actually step in at some point? It's all very DARK but certainly COMPELLING TELEVISON.

After that some other stuff happens. There is an offensively superfluous scene of the husbands on a night out (sans Russel). My only observation other than WHY AM I WATCHING THIS TAKE ME BACK TO THE CHALET, is that the more Mauricio talks the more he seems to be really, really dumb. I guess you'd have to be to stay married to that witch.

At the end of the episode we do get our first ever(?) hint at a possibly compelling MALOOF plot, although it's so insanely chopped I can't quite figure out what's going on. :D Something about Adrienne owning a Basketball(?) club, and the fans wanting to possibly heckle/murder her? It'd be good to get some back story on this, but I suspect she's too guarded to let it all hang out the way Kyle, Kim and Taylor do.

Speaking of Kim and letting it all hang out, there's ominous signs from her as well when she answers a call from Adrienne quite clearly off her face on something or other, rambles nonsensically and misses a flight. I sense a dark trajectory building for both the wounded blondes of this season. :(

Kim & Kyle
It seems to me that of the Richards sisters, Kyle is much better equipped to be a reality TV personality. She annoys the fuck out of me, but she clearly knows how to stir the pot and generate drama, and can probably create a fairly healthy mental separation between the show and her real life. I'm trying to avoid too many spoilers, but I do know she's the only OG still in the cast and her marriage seems to have endured, so I guess that's probably a testament to her resilience.

I do not think the same is true for poor Kim. With that in mind, watching her struggling to navigate the horribly awkward 'blind date' (at a huge party hosted by somebody she seemed to barely know, populated by judgemental witches, with TV cameras rolling) was excruciating. Any other member of the cast would probably have embraced the unreality of it all and laughed it off, but Kim kept doing clearly un-TV friendly things like showing up dressed like an actual prostitute and then vanishing to the bathroom for long stretches of time ( :eyes: ).

I felt bad for her, even moreso on the following episode where she meets another guy and impulsively invites him over to meet her terrifying brood of children and comes off completely desperate and unhinged. It's undeniably compelling, but I kind of wish somebody (not Kyle) would take her under their wing a bit.

On a lighter note, this scene of Kim being unwillingly strapped into what appears to be a medieval torture device masquerading as a beauty spa treatment while Kyle smirks impassively from the sidelines is a moment of high camp that probably sums up their relationship better than any moment I've seen so far. :D

Oh, and I have nowhere else to put it, but the offhand reveal that Kyle's live-in nanny appears to have FLED INTO THE NIGHT the day before her cycling trip really cracked me up. :D

Taylor
Did Taylor give her daughter Munchausen syndrome by proxy as an excuse to get rid of that dog? Because I feel like that's what happened. :D

There's a more subtle shade of crazy emanating from her compared to the open wound that is Kim, but it's really starting to come through as the weeks go by. That said, the revelation that she's a child of domestic abuse and now hosts fundraiser's for a women's shelter was actually genuinely touching, and her breaking down while talking about it felt very real for this show. The husband still gives me the absolute creeps.

Lisa
Lisa seems to have settled in nicely as the comic relief/narrator of the show. Still living for her catty one-liners, but there's not much else to say at this point. I feel she took a slightly MALICIOUS JOY in setting Kim up with a guy who was patently unsuitable for her, and I could probably have watched an entire episode of her torturing her house gay and being openly hostile to commoners during the whole driving licence B-plot.

Camille
OK so she is 100% on the outs with the other women after the New York fight, then? It was like every 20 minutes or so the producers would be like "Oh yeah, Camille is contracted on this show!" and cut to her randomly twirling in ball gowns and recapping scenes from previous episodes with un-named hangers on. :D

Im up to this episode now. Feel so sorry for poor Taylor and you could see the shock in Adrienne’s face when she heard she’d witnessed domestic abuse. Adrienne sorta reminds me of Matty from RHOS I don‘t know why I cant help liking her
 
S02 E04 - Gossip Girls

Hobbling into the club crutch first, it's future Traitors USA star Brandi! I've heard her name a few times so I'm assuming she'll quickly graduate to main character status. First impression is promising - Kyle instantly hates her, she's not particularly intimidated by Lisa ("She's, what? SIXTY?" had me howling :D) and she has a juicy back story about being dumped for LEANN RIMES which I'm excited to hear more of.

The flimsy premise for her arrival is Kyle's Kids with Cancer party, which is for some reason held in what looks like some grimy back-alley parking lot and raises the princely sum of $15,000. Kyle moaning and being a nightmare about this is about the extent of her storyline until Brandi shows up so she doesn't get a write-up this week.

Kim/Adrienne
Following directly on from the previous episode, Kim finally shows up to fly to Sacramento with Adrienne, but she's clearly completely off her face. :( Her rather alarming excuse is that the power went out in her house and she was forced to do her hair and makeup in the dark? Is poor Kim just living in an actual crack den at this point? Naturally I blame Kyle.

Adrienne's plot remains a bit MURKY but it's something about her wanting to flog the basketball club and move them to a new stadium, and the fans consequently hating her. I kind of zoned out but it was nice that she had something to do for once I guess.

Taylor/Lisa
The other thread of this episode concerns poor Taylor, whose recent woes have been leaked to the press by somebody who is definitely part of the cast and not production. (I guess it would be breaking the fourth wall too much, but the fact that she never once considers this possibility is wild to me :D). Anyway, she and Kyle decide that it's most definitely Lisa, with the help of a theatrically creepy gay private detective/possible blueberry.

The budding Lisa/Taylor tension gets further fuel when the former also confronts Taylor with some home truths about her recent dramatic weight loss, which may or may not come from a well-meaning place, but it feels a touch aggressive to corner her about it in the middle of a party. It's not quite the fourth-wall break of the ski chalet, but it does feel like a rather awkward mix of produced TV drama and real life.

(gay sidebar: despite her tacky pink everything and the half-dead dog she lugs around everywhere, there are moments in this show when I'm quite taken by Lisa's ELEGANT BEAUTY. The lighting is probably doing her quite a few favours, but she looks stunning in the party scenes during this episode!)

Camille
Poor Camille is fully checked out once again and gets one solo scene where she goes wetsuit shopping the ever-present DEDE. I have nothing to say about this I'm afraid as it was total filler. Bring back evil Camille!
 
Didn't wurst (I'm sorry but there aren't enough hours in my life to tag/type out the new name every time) once mention that Dede is clearly madly in love with Camille, and Camille is fully aware of it but also barely gives her the time of day? :D I totally get that vibe between them. Whatever the opposite of Brandi's instant main character energy is, Dede would be it. She's probably had more screentime than Adrienne at this point, but she's just total wallpaper.
 
Season 2’s Saint Camille does whip up a storm later but unfortunately Evil Camille is officially checked out this season, never to return until Season 9. :(
