Was Ellen DeGeneres evil?

Kathy’s main point was that female comics of a certain age should be trying to stick together to get past the barriers they had, to which Ellen defiantly whinged “I shouldn’t have to have anyone on my show that I don’t want”

It's nice when people make exceptions just on a whim of their own. I imagine lots of people had 'uninformed hunches that Caroline Flack deserved it' too.
 
Having said all of that, some of the evidence in this thread is incriminating. But I also don't think she deserves a lynch mob.

I think it's fair to call it a lynch mob at this point, but what is the consequence? Her show being cancelled because less people are tuning into her increasingly sanctimonious behavior? I am not losing sleep over that.

Everyone pushing back against the so-called pile-on. It's a pile-on only possible as a result of the evidence there is that she is a reprehensible person, which is OVERWHELMING in its quantity. Even if some people are lying, embellishing or taking the piss, there is still an absolute GLUT of stories about her acting like a sociopath.

The thing that bothers me most, besides the potential dodginess in her relationship with Portia, is the fact that she appears to treat her staff, and indeed any non-celebrities, as subhuman. I have no respect for people like that. And the reason it deserves recognition is because of the chummy public persona upon which she has built her fortune.

It’s certainly what I’ve found to be true of life though, that the ones who lead the moral crusade are actually much worse behind-the-scenes than the people who have a sense of humour about themselves and other people and make open jokes. That clip of Oprah and Ellen brag-joking about when they last went to the bank is exactly the sort of thing that would be prime for making fun of, and I suspect Oprah would find it funny and Ellen would blast it as VILE MEAN BEHAVIOUR

Watching this clip is shocking more than anything because she had an obvious spark for hosting that show and seemed to be enjoying herself and now it's all so stilted and humdrum and routine. Like, just retire if you're over it!

There was some mention of this earlier in the thread, no? I mean, the allegations focused on Ellen's relationship with Portia are definitely less well-substantiated than those about her being a cunt to her staff but it mostly focuses on Ellen generally being very controlling.

Look, I don't really think Ellen Degeneres is about to go off and pop herself, but the fact is NONE of us knows what's going on in someone's head. Only two months ago we were all saying how awful the media/public were to a celebrity who ended up killing herself. Once you realise it's a lynch mob, you need to probably back off, regardless of who the celebrity is.

Well that's me TOTALLY CONVINCED then :eyes:

She's always struck me as a COLD and an ODD fish and I imagine all that money and power could exacerbate anyone's tyrannical tendencies, not that that is to forgive them

Her coming out on her sitcom was a genuinely incredible moment though. I remember going to a viewing party for it :D

It did seem to pretty much kill her career, as predicted, though how much that was down to sitcom stars rarely making the transition away form their shows in any kind of similarly stellar heights is an interesting point

The fact she built it back up with her dreary chat show was impressive even if she flies mostly entirely under my radar.

That felt so utterly embarassing to the point I was surprised the woman didn't decline her gesture.
But then again it must be really akward to behave like you normally would knowing sth is being televised plus she could well be thinking that this was one of Elen's bad taste jokes, so who knows.

Yeah, I don’t exactly see much similarity between Caroline Flack’s personality and that of (IMO) abusive hard-eyed old psychochops here...

A masterclass in passing the buck
Hey everybody — it's Ellen. On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness — no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect. Obviously, something changed, and I am disappointed to learn that this has not been the case. And for that, I am sorry. Anyone who knows me knows it's the opposite of what I believe and what I hoped for our show.

I could not have the success I've had without all of your contributions. My name is on the show and everything we do and I take responsibility for that. Alongside Warner Bros, we immediately began an internal investigation and we are taking steps, together, to correct the issues. As we've grown exponentially, I've not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I'd want them done. Clearly some didn't. That will now change and I'm committed to ensuring this does not happen again.

I'm also learning that people who work with me and for me are speaking on my behalf and misrepresenting who I am and that has to stop. As someone who was judged and nearly lost everything for just being who I am, I truly understand and have deep compassion for those being looked at differently, or treated unfairly, not equal, or — worse — disregarded. To think that any one of you felt that way is awful to me.

It's been way too long, but we're finally having conversations about fairness and justice. We all have to be more mindful about the way our words and actions affect others, and I'm glad the issues at our show were brought to my attention. I promise to do my part in continuing to push myself and everyone around me to learn and grow. It's important to me and to Warner Bros. that everyone who has something to say can speak up and feels safe doing so.

I am so proud of the work we do and the fun and joy we all help put out in the world. I want everyone at home to love our show and I want everyone who makes it to love working on it. Again, I'm so sorry to anyone who didn't have that experience. If not for COVID, I'd have done this in person, and I can't wait to be back on our stage and see you all then.
