Wednesday eats at 11pm

Looks like I might be going back to work next week! Wasn’t expecting this for at least another month.

Got into work late and OH NO! I’ve missed a whole office Skype meeting. I shall have to wait another week before I get to hear the people working from home prattling about how difficult it is to not come into the office.

Gone into the office to pick up a laptop. There's a few people here. Forgot how much I don't miss the constant whirr of incessant chatter.

God I hope I can work from home forever.
The buzz is getting louder about me being able to work from home now, and I can’t wait. I much prefer my own company to anyone else’s, especially when I’m trying to concentrate.

Mr L has been told he'll be working from home until at least September. And he reckons it will probably become at least a split home/office pattern after that.

I'm still resisting working from home hard. I'd go fucking crazy if I had to stay in all day. It's only my commute which allows me to process the day. I had a hell of a lot of verbal abuse last week and think I'd struggle with that if I was at home. And the idea of letting things like child protection matters into my home makes me feel really uncomfortable. I'm guessing the teachers here probably have some experience of it, though.

I’ve also been told until “at least” September. But agree now that we’ve been doing it for so long, that working from home will become more normal. It works for me, as I think I want to move from Edinburgh at some point, so if I don’t need to go to the office so much then I have way more flexibility over where I can live.

Yeah there’s no hurry to get us back to our office either - especially if we had to put social distancing measures in place then it’d be next to pointless. I’d like to think once this is all over there’ll be much more flexibility.

Is London still on the cards @SDF? Or was that just old early-2020 office-centric thinking?

Oh I change my mind every single day. :D

I think realistically it is either London or Glasgow.

If I move to London, I'll probably keep my flat in Edinburgh and rent it out, but if I move to Glasgow I'll sell and buy something there.

I suppose the safest option is maybe Glasgow, and at worst I could then rent out my flat there if I hated it that much. But that means I'd need to sell soon, which may be a stupid idea.

I really was/am up for London, but the job market scares me right now. And keeping my relatively safe (or so they tell me) job with the commute to Edinburgh a couple of times a month wouldn't be bad at all.

So I got up at 5:30, did a fast (for me) 5k run, then completed the target I’d set myself this summer of swimming from the pier to the Coffee Cup Café (1.6 miles), then felt wobbly from too much energy so had to pop to my mum’s for an emergency peanut butter roll, then went back to the sea and paddle boarded for about an hour, doing about 5k. @Kate - where were you?

Now off for lunch at a friend’s, then for an afternoon stroll with other friends and home to cook a roast. Furlough/ Garden leave really is suiting me :D

There’s a massive fucking spider patrolling by the printer, and there’s nobody in the office who can catch it. I don’t know whether to call the police.

It’s posts like these that make me realise I have pissed away these last few months of furlough.

Having lived in both, I'd choose Glasgow, unless you are making six figures. And yeah, the job market will be ludicrous at the moment so I doubt getting a job in London would be particularly easy.

I think my work are open to me moving to London. But they absolutely wouldn’t give me a London uplift, as it is me that is asking for the move (Entirely fair). And I just don’t earn enough in my current job to justify the move there, in anything but a short term basis.

I moved to London from Glasgow 10 years ago, just looking at what my rent could get me up there nowadays and I could cry.

London is FINE but it's really not ALL THAT. I'm really looking to move somewhere else in the next 2 years but can't decide WHERE, and right now really isn't the time for big life decisions .

Yeah I wouldn’t have moved to London in a million years without a new job sorted and certainly wouldn’t in the current climate. No harm with putting the feelers out on that front of course before making any plans.

Manchester!

Most of my London friends seem to moan about the cost of their rent a lot and the fact they live in shoeboxes, but they wouldn't move elsewhere. Though I think once you hit mid 30s that changes and London doesn't hold the same appeal as it did when you were younger. I was close on a few occasions to moving down, once when I was 20 when I graduated and once around 6 years ago when I got made redundant from my old job, but it never worked out, by the time of the latter I had a mortgage and there was also Mr K and my mum to consider. Our company has an office in The Adelphi in London so I could easily transfer there and I'd automatically get the extra allowance, but it still wouldn't be enough to live comfortably whereas my salary in Glasgow goes so much further, and I don't even have a mortgage anymore, and I don't really know if I can be faffed with a new one, and there is no way I am going back to renting.

oh is this time for me to depress myself by seeing what sort of palatial penthouse I could buy in Glasgow

Just remember their weather really is shit.

Just the excuse you need to spend more time in palatial penthouses.

I am hoping to buy my own place next year, so I have started looking at Glaswegian properties. I had a glance at what the same money would get in London and it was laughable. Even Edinburgh was quite different too.

The Edinburgh market is absolutely LUDICROUS. Even in rough parts, I was getting outbid by about 20k.:bad:

I was reading that as the song played and started reading it in Phil Daniels' meter.

Manchester really is a good shout. Big enough city, good nightlife, countryside and coast nearby, good transport links to everywhere else.

And as of this week we now have a tropical climate. Hot and MASSIVE rain.

Having said that it doesn't seem like Glasgow goes in for epic roof terraces anyway. I can't find any.

This will have to do. Still less than what I paid for my London shoebox.
