Wednesday - starring Catherine Zeta Jones (Netflix) (1 Viewer)

Younger Gomez was gorgeous though.

CZJ illuminates the screen here, yet the part is not really giving her much to do. I think the performance is still enjoyable, but it's nothing to rave about so far. I actually think I enjoyed episode 5 more because she was in it so much.

Finished it now, whilst I did thoroughly enjoy it as a jolly-jape I was shocked by the lack of talent of CZJ! She was clunky and it came over as an uncomfortable performance to me, like she didn't know what to do with her hands or something and there was too much emotion shown for Morticia. Maybe I've just been spoiled by Anjelica Huston. I'd still watch season 2 if they make it and she's in it though.

Following Ricci, I hope they recast an original in every season. Joan Cusak would make a fabulous new head. And of course, Angelica, but I feel that would absolutely wipe CZJ off the screen completely, at least before she properly digs into the part more (but I really do feel this is as much the limitations of the script).

I'm not sure why y'all had such high hopes for CZJ. She's never been that great of an actress for me. The camera loves her, but she does best when she has a strong cast around her.

I’m not catching up yet because I’m only on Ep 5 but… hmm I still have a lot of problems.

Gomez is awful casting
These teen side stories are so cliche and everything I enjoyed Wednesday in the movies for avoiding.

The two male “love interests”(?!) are dull as shit, and then supporting female students too - Wednesday doesn’t give a fuck about them so why should we?

Especially the sappy roommate, she’s not even a parody of a peppy annoying student, she just is

The “conversion camp” storyline was a BIG swing for a character who didn’t seem to be on that sort of arc, but luckily she can stop her mum sending her to be converted by politely but firmly saying No :) once. It’s that easy kids

And the whole murder plot was just wrapped up like that? Police chief with a 30 year grudge just gave up like that? :D

Was the coffee shop one wearing a teeth-whitening shield or something, he is determined not to open his mouth. Maybe he’s a ventriloquist

@Diddy 🎄 You do know this is a 12 rated programme? It's for kids. :D

So was the Addams Family movie, that doesn’t mean it can’t be good? I’m not sure what you took away from my comments.

If you’re going to take a character so iconic and established as Wednesday - and it’s not a reboot, it’s obviously picking up where the movie left off - you really need to do something other than the most reductive love triangle teen story.

And they’re putting her in this school that seems tailor-made for her character, but she’s being treated like a weirdo when she doesn’t follow all the tropes of a completely typical high school. I mean which is it? It’s like going to an international school but being shunned because she’s foreign 🤷🏻‍♂️

I like the aesthetic of the show, but I don’t think its rating is an excuse for sloppy writing

Well I just finished it - and if I may be permitted to pass comment on something "for kids" - which I really HAVE to call out as a total bullshit way to shut someone down for commenting on a TV show, particularly one with as much gore, gutting and stabbing as this one. And tbh I didn't want to post here for a while

It wasn't the worst thing I've watched, better than Sabrina I guess, but it felt like they could've done so much more with it - the monster mystery just felt strung out with The CW teen drek storylines. Those are used in basically everything else on Netflix, why waste such a famous property on that too? Jenny had the look, even if the smell-the-fart acting was quite one-note. But she was better than most of the schoolmates (Wolf girl, the "love" interests, all dire) - Bianca had promise but they gave her nothing to do, and bee boy too, but he was benched for half the season.

As for the grownups, I've said about the Addamses already, Fester was ... I don't know what to make of him. Gwenny had the presence of a quietly cross mannequin. There were enough misdirects to basically suggest everyone so I don't know if that helps or hinders the final reveal. But I have to say I was annoyed we didn't get to see if
that rotted wig they put Ricci in was a canonical wig, I wanted a reveal! At least it excused her of not being able to smile naturally

Just felt like missed potential and bad writing, even though the aesthetic (and main actress) were chosen well.

She was the weakest one in Crash and Mission Impossible and I've seen bits of Westworld where she was nothing special  but she's too bland for me to hate!
What about how DREADFUL she was in The Pursuit of Happyness? I even like Run Fatboy Run, but she’s the only crap thing there. Or trying to be Audrey Hepburn in the remake of Charade (The Truth About Charlie). She somehow has an OBE for her rather limited and bland resumé.
