I THINK last year was it’s first actual Christmas Day number one though. That may have been another year as all the years are now gelling in to one. 🤦‍♀️

You're right.

It’s always #1 the week after Christmas too now, which is so weird. I guess that’s because Christmas Day will obviously fall somewhere during a week, but for it to be #1 on the chart announced December 30th or whatnot is just so bizarre. But I guess streams on Christmas Day are always so huge it doesn’t matter how quickly it falls in the following days.

It always seems to overtake Mariah a week or two prior, while she leads the start. No idea why.

I doubt she is. She died in 2019, also on Christmas Day.

Oh God I had no idea. He had two sisters, but not sure if his estate was split equally with them both or if his parents are still alive.

His Mum died in the 90s and he was devastated about it. I think his Dad is still alive, though.

Instagram has made Whamaggedon unwinable - there's always some cunt who whaps it onto their posts so all you need is one "suggested" post and yr out.

Whamageddon is pointless anyway - if you win you're just missing out on listening to one of the best Christmas songs ever.

Cheer up hen. Some of us have had it in our lives for 41 years.

I've not heard any reference to Whamageddon this year at all. Never realised it was still a thing.

The reason it's a bit of fun is because it is nigh on impossible. Going out early is as good as inevitable, it's a matter of how. If you "survive", you've put far too much effort into it and need to take a wee look at yrself.

It smells of homophobia. Let's avoid George Michael, backs against the wall etc.

Of all the Christmas songs to hate on as ubiquitous though? I consider it a fine wine Christmas song, while there’s plenty of others I could do without hearing again.

I think if the idea had come a few years later it would have been Mariah but that wasn't as ingrained as it is now.

I haven't heard The Pogues, Mariah or Slade yet this year. When I've been out shopping, places haven't been playing Christmas songs, just generic instrumental carols and stuff.

I think Last Christmas has suffered most from overplay of all the big Christmas hitters.

I used to love it, but I find it annoyingly twee nowadays...

Eleven months off annually is enough for me to fall in love with it every year.

Yeah this. And also for me I wasn't a fan when I was younger, so I don't have the same indifference towards it that I have to Mariah for instance. Mariah is the ubiquitous one for me but because it was so prevalant for so long. I'm enjoying Last Christmas now in a way I didn't growing up.

I don't recall Last Christmas from my childhood. It came it when I was four. I knew all the others.

By the time I was 16 I knew it as I found and bought a copy of it in a charity shop.

I suspect it wasn't on my mum's two cassette Xmas album!

For me, it arrives in my memory through childhood Christmas shopping excursions, so department stores and eateries such as the BHS Cafe (RIP) or Burger King (which I coincidentally have a strong memory of Cher's One By One from in such a setting - from Falkirk specifically, the glamour!)

I think I like it more now than I did then. I found it super-cheesy at the time but now I'm older, I realise that it was made to a design and the sound was part of that - it was made to be a mid-80s pop hit and, in 2025, that sound is considered classic (in the right hands, of course).

All that, and elevated further by perhaps the most versatile vocalist of his generation.

I never got that impression. It came from the same Facebook crucible as getting Rage Against The Machine to Christmas #1 and suchlike.
My point stands. Of course Simon Cowell and Christmas No.1 was a stain on culture, but there was definitely elements of Disco Demolition Night to it all.
