I think it's one of her finest ballads but the production is a little bit on the '90s cheesefest at this point , and I don't think she really got on with David Foster.
Yes it's Take A Bow part 2 (but ironically it was ACTUALLY a hit in this country. )
Of course I accept it was at the time a mere stepping stone for her fully inhabit the Eva Peron persona ( as was the entire STR project bien Sur) - however, I love her vocals and the lyrics.
She looked flawless on the rare TOTP perf as well.

I prefer Live To Tell as far as non RoL ballads go. It's still a 10 though, obviously.

I don't particularly like that TotP performance though.

"I don't have any information about this subject, but you're wrong"

:D

The Power of Goodbye is OBVIOUSLY the correct answer.

Twas my favourite song of all time ever for a good ten years or so. Now I don't know if it would even be in my Madonna Top 5 :o

Still 13/10 though.

BALLAD RATE

01. The Power Of Goodbye
02. Live To Tell
03. I'll Remember
04. Rain
05. You'll See

I know it's a slowey, but I don't count Frozen as a ballad. It's really a witch song.

I've never liked it all that much. For all the passion in the vocal, it sounds quite rote and insincere strangely enough.

I wouldn't even put it in her Top 10 ballads.

I know it probably technically *is* a ballad, but I don’t class The Power of Goodbye as one.

I don’t really class I Want You as a ballad because how can it be a Massive Attack song and a ballad, but I suppose it is in a way.

And if so, it’s my fave ballad because it’s also my fave song of hers.

I'm not going to vote but I really don't care for it much AT ALL. Thinks it's being dramatic but just comes across WHINY and we've ALL KNOWN THAT TYPE

as far as M's 2010 Ballards go I will always stan Ghosttown, it's LOVELY, especially the post-chorus

When the world gets cold
I'll be your cover
Let's just hold
Onto each other :(
Wendy, O foe
Wendy, O foe
Damn!

I prefer it to Take A Bow and the video is perfection
I first read this as the inverse so had to unlike, sorry. :(

I do like "You'll See" but it does seem schmulzier (production wise if not lyrically) than "Take a Bow". I love how low and rich her voice is on TAB, particularly the verses. "You'll See" was more her latter day Evita voice, while technically good, just not as warm.

Top ten ballads

1. Live to Tell
2. Rain
3. Frozen
4. Take a Bow
5. Time Stood Still
6. What it Feels Like for a Girl (does it count?)
7. This Used to be my Playground
8. Oh Father
9. Gone
10. Bad Girl

Oooh, a Top 10 Madonna ballads is an appealing proposition, and heavily favours her mid-late career IMO
  1. Frozen
  2. Take a Bow
  3. Gone
  4. The Power of Goodbye
  5. You Must Love Me
  6. Time Stood Still
  7. Live To Tell
  8. Devil Wouldn't Recognize You
  9. Nothing Fails
  10. Masterpiece

1. The Power of Goodbye
2. Paradise (Not For Me)
3. Nothing Fails
4. I Want You
5. Frozen
6. Ghosttown
7. This Used to be my Playground
8. Promise to Try
9. Take a Bow
10. You’ll See

I decided to include the electro and hip hop ballads. And also decided You’ll See isn’t the best non-RoL ballad at all.

The ballads:

1. You'll see
2. Frozen
3. Crazy for you
4. Love to tell
5. The power of goodbye
6. Take a bow
7. Joan of Arc
8. You must love me
9. Pray for Spanish eyes
10. Gone

It's a bit boring, isn't it? She sounds great and all, but it's kinda lifeless.

The Power of Goodbye is probably my favourite Balladonna moment these days. I've also always had a soft spot for This Used To Be My Playground, it's the song that made me fan.
I prefer the Orbit/Mirwais-produced ballads overall, so it's Frozen, TPOG Nothing Fails and Time Stood Still for me.

Is I’ll Remember a ballad? Surely it’s a midtempo ballad in the same way TPOG is

If so I’d include that as well.

A top 10 would be difficult but I’ll have a go. It would probably just be a reversioned track list of Something To Remember for the most part.

1. Frozen
2. Time Stood Still
3. You'll See
4. You Must Love Me
5. The Power of Goodbye
6. Gone
7. Oh Father
8. Live To Tell
9. Pray for Spanish Eyes
10. Playground

So many of these are GOD TIER

Everybody viewing Frozen as a ballad but not Justify My Love is not a choice I’m prepared to endorse

Unless you all don’t think JML is top ten material in which case I’m putting in a mass complaint

Justify My Love is NEVER a ballad. It doesn't (really) have a melody, is far more rooted in dance. If JML is a ballad, then so is Erotica, which is just fucking nonsense. Just because something is slow, it doesn't instantly make it a ballad.

Frozen I included because it's an electro ballad- you took away the backing track and that vocal could easily fit with a piano.

I'm also annoyed I failed to include Love Don't Live Here Anymore, the single remix, which I fucking love, though I realise everyone else will POUR SCORN on that.
