What Are You Watching? 2023

The first episode of Becoming Elizabeth was very promising with a great cast, lots of Seymour brother drama and a darker tone than I expected. Bella Ramsey only appeared briefly so far as the brat Jane Grey, and Tom Cullen pretty much stole the first episode. Sadly I see this acquisition has already been cancelled so I'd better not get too attached.
 
The Sixth Commandment on iPlayer - a true crime drama about a lovely old repressed queen who falls in love with a sweet young student and they live happily ever after (until the young student MURDERS HIM FOR HIS MONEY and then moves on to the neighbour played by Anne Reid to try and do the same to her :o )

I had somehow entirely missed it in the news from a few years back but it is QUITE THE STORY, and Timothy Spall in particular (as the killer's first victim) is so so good.
 
Also it feels a lot more respectful to the victims than if, say netflix or channel 5 were doing it, while still being quite grizzly and jolly entertaining. PASS THE POPCORN, BARBARA

Just watched the first episode and it is pretty GRIM. Very well done as usual, but can’t believe it is a true story. Probably happening a fair bit aswell.
 
Watched the first one too, really quite sad in places and yes well made and GRIM, I remember hearing about this case, but fairly recently in a documentary.
 
I've now watched the doc on the recommendation of our @PercyPig and it's great too - the level of access the team had is QUITE SOMETHING.

It also made me appreciate the series even more, as so much is just BANG ON. I totally thought Ben asking the policeman if he had a book he could read was made up for the telly, so to see it played out for real was quite lol.

Whats the doc on? I love watching the documentaries after the series, I did that with 'Four Lives' too - the Barking Grindr murders.

I have finished the second episode now. Its really quite heart breaking, Timothy Spall and Anne Reid play blinders, they deserve BAFTAS.
 
Talking of crime, I'd recommend 'Murder in The Family' on ITV1 last night - think it may have been a repeat, S1 Ep 2 - Jennifer Cronin - so interesting and disturbing to look back on a murder that involved DV/DA and how the police fail to protect.
 
Wonderful performances all over the place in The Sixth Commandment (Spall and Reid moat obviously but the actors playing Field and the niece too). I thought the first two episodes were the most powerful but it was excellent throughout.

That rapping though...

Pretty sure I have seen the documentary but I may watch again in the light of seeing this.
 
The Sixth Commandment was fantastic, the combination of Spall, Reid and Hancock in one series was phenomenal.

I hadn't seen Éanna Hardwicke in anything previously but he was sensational and equally charismatic and terrifying.

Totally agree, was trying to work out where I know the Niece from and its The Split -Annabel Scholey, what a masterpiece this series has been.
 
The Horror of Dolores Roach on Amazon Prime, like a modern day Sweeney Todd and based on a one-woman Broadway show. 8 episodes and great fun. :disco:

I'm 5 eps into this and I will stick with it - because the eps are all 30 mins and under (YES PLEASE) and the cast, especially buff Gene Wilder, are great - but I'm yet to see why it's become a breakout hit.

Also yet to grasp why the restaurant - essentially a kebab house with a side room that has like five tables - has SO MANY STAFF

I’ve never seen any of it before, but I started cycle 3 of Americas Next Top Model and I’m obsessed

I'm four eps in and am absolutely loving it.

It's so much fun and, yes, quite crackers - and there's a twist in ep 4 which had me LOLing with delight. The cast are all nailing it too.
 
I've finished Wolf and I LOVED IT.

It's very much Not For Everyone, but mostly it stays on the right side of UTTERLY FUCKING BATSHIT (the jury's still out on the bit with the crocodiles) and I found the ending both surprising AND satisfying.

Still no idea why it's called Wolf, mind

Wolf is awful. It’s like an off-brand ‘Black Mirror’ dragged out across 6 episodes. It’s also a timely reminder that Juliet Stevenson is a horrible actor.
 
I've not watched Selling Sunset but is that hard to sell homes to millionaires?

They hardly have to go away and try and find an extra £30k because the price for a 2 bed flat has just gone £40k over home report
 
Those selling home shows are so boring (but good for you if you watch them). If it isn't people getting overly stressed about the prospect of an avocado bathroom, I don't care. Super wealth is, surprisingly, super dull.

I just finished the brilliantly bonkers HIJACK! on Apple+

I started this last night, loved it but by the hell WTF! Had me quite jumpy but seemed quite original and refreshing, had me hooked from the start

I’ve watched it all and absolutely LOVED IT. So odd but enthralling and got better all the way through.

Yes, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but the first episode really had me glued, and jumpy! I thought it was quite edgy for the BEEB too.

Juliet Stevenson is superb and that lead actor is quite DISHY
