I was going to create this thread a while ago but felt it was probably not the right time when The Queen passed but just before the coronation of our new King I thought it was the right time to ask what Moopy thinks.

Basic poll, for a basic family.

I'm a history nerd and have loved the "Kings and Queens" for as long as I can remember. I was bought all the kiddy facr books, was taken on trips to the Tower and Palaces with my grandad (a fellow geek) and it plays an important part in my history and enjoyment at school. As I got older, while understanding the more problematic virtues of worshipping a rich family who did nothing but simply be born, I felt that the queen herself always seemed like a nice enough woman who understood her duty and I quite enjoyed the pomp, the tourism, the traditions etc and wasn't exactly in favour in stopping all dead "just 'cause".

That all turned for me when she died. While I had an overwhelming sense of the excitement of "living through a historical moment", the 10(!) days of national mourning, with certain faculties not being allowed to carry on as normal while the proles were indeed all expected to carry on was excessive. That and the overlong, frivolous funeral all seemed so overindulgent and at a time where so many of us were struggling, it really highlighted how out of touch and old fashioned the whole concept is. The comparisons to seeing Koreans bawling as the Red Army marches in favour of their Dear Leader and his rockets were spot on.

Also sidebar: but my mum made me watch it with the family and it was SO BORING.

The queen's death and transition to Charles may have been a good time to start winding it down and changing some of the more expensive aspects of the family. Sell off some assets, do some good for the public, I don't know, something good for publicity maybe? But seems to be a whole of doubling down instead and I feel like the Coronation is just going to be another sickingly lavish affair that won't go down too well with the younger generation. (And yes my mum's asked us all over for it and I expect it to be BORING LIKE THE FUNERAL).
 
what I dislike more is the bizarre displays of serfdom everytime they put an event on. but the people who do best in the world are those that don’t think about justice too deeply, so i imagine there’s a lot of comfort in an imposed hierarchy. besides, we all have our idols! ❤️
 
The blind devotion otherwise intelligent members of the public have to them is infuriating.

I've yet to see any valid arguments beyond "THInk oF the TOuRist MoNEy" as if no republican country has ever sustained a tourism industry.

I've been a casual republican pretty much my entire life, but the transition to the new King basically radicalised me.

The heavy handed response to protesters, especially ones related to the new king rather than the dead queen, was disgusting. Then seeing Sturgeon pledge OBEDIENCE to the new king was the final straw. I know it's just words and part of the ceremony, but it is just so at odds with my values and those of the country (Scots law explicitly holds that sovereignty lies with the people)

It has no place whatsoever in modern society as a matter of principle, and that's before you start dealing with all the land and capital held by the royal family that should be fully owned by the public.

Also, constitutionally, it is a problem having a head of state that can't actually execute functions that could be useful in response to the legislature. The illegal prorogation of parliament could have been stopped by a president who has a mandate and authority drawn from an election, whereas the Queen had to act on advice from the prime minister despite it being obvious at the time he was being duplicitous
 
I've never been a fan of the royal family but Mr F was always a staunch royalist. Over the last six years or so he's developed into an anti-Royalist. The only thing I liked about them was Trooping the Colour but I can get my fix of military splendour from the Edinburgh Tattoo.

Surely, in the 21st Century, it's time to rid society of inherited titles and rulers who can't actually change anything, sitting in their palaces whilst their subjects choose between eating and heating. It stinks.

I also believe that religion should have no part in Government whatsoever. They call themselves Christians (and I'm including the Royal Family in this) but their actions, especially towards those they see as "beneath them" (the poor, the disabled, people of colour, refugees, the elderly) are anything but.
 
In the absence of any radical reform likely to happen, I'm quite pleased that the general response to the coronation seems, so far, to be one of disinterest.

No doubt there will be crowds of people flocking to see it on the day and the various news outlets will present those visuals as representative of an entire nation watching. But it all seems to be falling a bit flat.
 
I've never understood people who worship the royals and think that they can do no wrong. Seeing outpourings of grief after one of them has died, people travelling across the country to sit in a tent in the rain on the offchance you might glimpse one of them?! I just don't get it! They don't care about peasants! Our newest member of staff, born in Central America in what used to be a British Colony and grew up in Chicago, thinks they're amazing but has so far been unable to explain why she thinks that. We've educated her on why he's called "Randy Andy", Fergie, the absolute shitshow of Diana's treatment from beginning to end, Phil the Greek and inbreeding over the last nine months and I'm hopeful that one day she'll realise that they don't deserve worship and embrace it like she's embraced use of the word "wanker" as an insult.

I think this is what baffles me the most. Most people who "think the Royal Family are great" can't explain why or put any vaguest logic to it.

Most of those people will also agree it's QUITE RIGHT that Meghan should be tried for treason and hung, whilst deflecting on the topic of Randy Andy. They'll also be completely unable to articulate WHY they think that's right when challenged.

It's the most peculiar form of public brainwashing. It's even more peculiar when it manifests with non-UK folk who really should be looking at us in AMUSEMENT not JEALOUSY.
 
It really feels like their relevancy has fallen off a cliff since the death of the Queen. So much of the goodwill towards the institution was tied up in affection towards her.

Put a fork in them - utterly charmless and if the UK (or whatever comes next) is going to move forward in the medium term it has to be without the monarchy, the House of Lords, the honours system etc.
 
I like Megan. But that’s more because of her as a person and what she has had to go through and put up with rather than anything.

I don’t really care about the rest of the Royal Family enough to care though. They will never ever get rid of them though.
 
I notice EASTER has been replaced with "KING'S CORONATION" everywhere in the supermarkets this week.

In anything, I'm the opposite to many opinions here in that i marginally like them more now that the Queen's dead. They're just so anonymous now that I forget they even exist. If i can't chop off their heads, then just let them fade into obscurity.
 
I think we did a poll like this some years back and I remember Moopy being MUCH more sympathetic towards them. I think, as Kratz said, Liz was really the last royal to have any goodwill towards that made the family worth tolerating.

No, more that most people I interact with in person have positive views of the UK, and there's not much press coverage of anything negative going on there. When I was a kid, I wanted to move there because I thought "everyone" in the UK/Europe was liberal and open to LGBT rights. But that's not really the case, and is has its positives and negatives like everywhere. I just know more about that because of Moopy
 
If it wasn't for Moopy, I never would have learned about Pumpkin, so I can't be too negative

It's an absolute binfire of a country. Those negative things are pretty much entirely justified.

There really is a strange and sobering moment when you realise you don't actually like where you're from. Brexit cemented that for me, from more of a position of indifference rather than pride, I confess.

I try to rationalise it as not being ashamed of my country, but ashamed of my government.

I mean that only works until you realise that a huge amount of the population are wankers, but even then I lay a fair bit of the blame for that squarely at the government.
 
Maybe it's because I'm basically a permanent exile at this point, but being "proud of your country" is just a fantasy. People want something worth fighting for cuz they think it gives their life meaning. But patriotism and politics are effectively all futile. People love to think that humans have "progressed" and "come so far", but absolutely nothing has changed. Empires are still empires, conquerors are still conquerors, and just as many people are oppressed today as they were in the past. It's like the old saying, "The more things change, the more they stay the same".

It sounds like corny defeatism, I know. And I don't think we should stop trying to make things better. But the best thing you can do is just endure it, help where you can, and ride the wave, instead of feeling bad about not being proud of your country. NOWHERE is worth being "proud" of.
