What do you think of when you hear the word Birmingham?

I find it ugly and soulless, but I've not spent a great deal of time there.

The train station is quite SLICK though. Much nicer than Manc Piccadilly.

I'm near enough I guess, I usually go out drinking there anyway. Some parts of it are ugly and it's always really busy at the weekend, but I think it's slightly underestimated in general. I have seen adverts for holidays in Moldova on the train though.

I think I preferred Chisinau actually.

I went out with a girl from there for a bit. It's a shithole.

There’s not a lot to it considering it’s so massive

I know it’s known for good shopping but it’s probably going to need to replace that with something over the next 10 years

@RJN is right - it’s profile is shocking really considering the size of it. Manchester is always seen as the second city, and places like Liverpool and Bristol and Edinburgh and Cardiff get all the tourism. Leeds and to a lesser extent Sheffield are like Manchester - student and business districts. Then you have the historic places like Bath and Cambridge and York.

Birmingham just seems really low down on the list!

Are any other major cities around just ignored in favour of better ones?

When I was about 7 or 8 coming back from holiday with the parents and there was some mix up at either the airport or train station and the sign above the people wanting I would guess Manchester, said "Birmingham"

And everyone started chanting "we don't want to go to Birrrrrrrmingham!!"

Marseille is wonderful, and probably my favourite city in France. So much less pretentious than Bordeaux or Lyon. I can't at the coded racism of French who are always very "ça craint un peu quand même", when really what they mean is that it's got a little too much melanin for their white palettes.

I can think of some examples where the capital city is ignored for better cities, so I guess at least we can all be pleased Birmingham isn't our SEAT OF POWER.

I'd argue that Liverpool has a worse rep, but they at least claim several notable music acts.

Birmingham isn't a centre of any major governance, any particuarly celebrated culture, has limited sporting achievements and is not the centre of any major media outlets.

How CHARMING! And what a SEXY BUNCH

Bring the games to Birmingham in nineteen ninety two

Well it used to really craint un peu, but that has changed a lot. And well, this summer the French gays decided it’s the new Sitges, so...

Sheffield :(

That said there’s FUCK ALL going on so it’s understandable

I think Sheffield suffers from being so close to Leeds.

If I was playing the same game for Sheffield, I'd give you steel, the Human League, and then I'm really scratching my head.
