I am going with TEOM but Butterfly could take it some days too. they're very different records and I love both.

the fact that she almost never belts on Butterfly makes it feel more of a mood piece. a couple of the ballads don't do it for me but the suite in the middle with 4th of July, Breakdown and Babydoll is absolutely exceptional - classy, experimental, by far her sexiest music up to that point (and since). Close My Eyes is a stunner, and The Beautiful Ones might be her best cover. overall it's easy to see why she considers it her magnum opus.

on the other hand I just love that warm, 70s soul-aping sound present across most of TEOM. even the filler cuts (Joy Ride, Circles) are a pleasure to listen to because she sounds so good riding that production. and then of course the singles run is bulletproof and Your Girl is among her best album tracks ever. it pips it for me because the album ends on such a high note with FLAB (I don't acknowledge the platinum edition).

she's insane for having two albums of this calibre in her ouvre.

She has incredible quality control and has always delivered good-to-great albums, but Butterfly soars so high above everything else.

Daydream. The vocals just spiral endlessly and I absolutely cannot get enough of it. Music Box closes in 2nd. Butterfly is absolutely on the podium too.

The first 6 albums are all great. After that, I don't think I'd want to listen to any of them again.

Butterfly for me. I was obsessed and this felt like the peak

E=MC is bops on bops on bops. Emancipation was strong, and it had We Belong Together, but that has an outsize impact on how the album is remembered.

E=MC2 is sort of a Now That's what I Call MIMI because baby girl was doing the most dipping her TROTTERS in every genre imaginable; it wasn't a bad album but she was looking for a hit and it did have some stellar potential singles: Migrate, I'm That Chick, Cruise Control, OOC and Side Effects (even 4Real4Real bopped a bit) God knows how they sat upon them and chose Bye Bye and I'll Stay In Love instead which could possible be in her WORST top 10 songs of all time.

Cruise Control not being a single was so insane. a smasha. the single choices sucked but they really wanted another WBT moment for her, when in fact the album was full of Shake it Offs.

Migrate and I’m that Chick were the wasted opportunities on that album imo. And then there was Side Effects and Cruise Control. OOC too. But they went with fucking Bye Bye.

Butterfly and TEOM are both #1 to me, so it comes down to personal reasons for me.

  1. Butterfly
  2. Daydream
  3. Emotions
  4. Caution
  5. Rainbow
  6. E=MC2
  7. The Emancipation of Mimi
  8. Music Box
  9. Mariah Carey
  10. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel
  11. Me... I Am Mariah. The Elusive Chanteuse
  12. Glitter
  13. Charmbracelet

Amusing and real that she has a new album out but its not her fave :D

…although she did say “and always will be” so I suppose the point stands

also why should any artist with 5+ albums pretend their new one is their best ever? Gaga promoting Mayhem has said Born This Way is her best work. does the new thing have to be the best ever? isn't it also time that confirms the brilliance of art?
