WELL.

I haven't rated based on which songs I feel are superior or not. I've gone on what I would rather listen to in a moment of retro gypsy whatever.

Obviously Honey is the better song; I've just heard it SO MANY TIMES that I'm a bit sick of it.

Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse (2014)

GOD what a SHIT album. :D Actually there were a few tracks in contention here (Faded, Dedicated, Camouflage) but I ended up only saving this one. Released as a promo single, it did nothing (despite an outing on Carpool Karaoke!) and I thought it was extra annoying to begin with, but it soon won me over. Co-written with long-time background singer Mary Ann Tatum and produced with Hit Boy, it's a throw away, fun, R&B club track. Don't be fooled by the cheap (sorry, minimal) beats on the verses - the choruses provide a rich blend of harmonies and an actual decent melody! Love the dark strings at 2:58, then a very abrupt ending - she was probably drunk.

I can't even go into what Triumphant means to me. It came at a juncture in my life where I needed to live in the moment of being positive, despite the filth that was being splattered around me, and it gave me everything. I think it is the most underrated single of her entire career.
 
I love Thirsty. It would make my Top 100, but not my Top 50. I enjoy what it has to say about Nick. That era was bleak commercially and image-wise. She seemed so lost.
 
I was only just laughing at what a PILE OF OLD SHIT Thirsty was during my Me...I Am Mariah listen but at least it’s vaguely INTERESTING, which is a rarity on this DREARY WALLPAPER OUTING.

The gag of Charmbracelet having one of the highest track counts. We love a troll. Obviously the high representation from Butterly and Rainbow is on point for girls of our generation. Similarly, Memoirs, which is very much that segue-into-adulthood, with one-too-many-splashes-over-dinner album.

The snub for Caution makes me... question your taste level, however.
 
I’ve got to The Art of Letting Go. I really wish this had been bigger- there’s the germ of something brilliant in there and I still think it’s a fantastic title. Should have been the album title too...
 
Caution is a great album but I guess it suffers from being relatively new and therefore lacking the deep emotional connection of previous works.

How else could CB end up with 4 tracks?! It was the soundtrack to our university days.

Charmbracelet was pre-university for me. Mimi came out at the end of my first year. Thank God Mariah delivered that year, because the rest of the year was awful.

Caution is such a good album. It probably doesn't have the stratospheric highs of some of her other albums, but GTFO, Caution, The Distance, Giving Me Life and Portrait would all be Top 50 contenders for me.

Same. I was very disappointed. It's such a powerful album. But she's a perfectionist through and through.
 
In her head, she can still execute a Butterfly or a Daydream vocally (in the studio). Her comments about Caution don't surprise me in the slightest.
 
That the vocals weren't where she wanted them to be. And (I think) that the whole album was rushed, and potentially that there should have been more songs on it.
 
I still was underwhelmed by Caution. It wasn't BAD but there was nothing over 7/10 for me. More 7/10s than recent albums, I grant you, but it was still kind of just THERE.

Maybe I should try it again.

Took me a while to get into it, but I truly believe it's her best album since Butterfly.

Lullaby
Charmbracelet (2002)

One of the standout tracks from the album, written and produced with Dre & Vidal, best known for producing Jill Scott and a whole raft of other R&B artists in the 2000s. They also did Michael Jackson's Butterflies, which is a favourite of mine, and has a similar feel. They worked on Clown as well, which narrowly missed out on a Top 50 place. I love the slinky production and the breathy vocals actually work for once. It feels like a proper R&B record without any rent-a-rappers, which is refreshing. The link to The Roof at the end is a nice touch too.

 
I could never see Lullaby as much more than a re-heated, far inferior attempt at recreating The Roof.

Bringin' On The Heartbreak
Charmbracelet (2002)

I was obsessed with this song for the longest time. A cover of the 1982 Def Leppard rock ballad, it was released as the third and final single from Charmbracelet. They went to the effort of beefing up the production and adding extra guitar overdubs from Dave Navarro. She even added new, more powerful vocals for the single/video release, but it didn't help its fortunes and it failed to chart. It's all very WHITE but I love the vocal climaxes of the final double chorus - that whistle really FITS the song and brings the HIGH DRAMA.

 
Lullaby is GORGEOUS. The best track from Charmbracelet and the FIRST proper self-referential track of hers.

Totally agree about the breathy vocals. It's such a flirty little song.
 
Oh HERE for this :disco: I'm in a better Mariah place than I have been for DECADES I feel. That Rarities album just reminded me how good she can be.

Sidebar- has moopy commented on how amazing she looked in her insta getting her vaccine? Sorry if I missed it but just had to say, LOVING the full circle 1990 curls. And she sounded fantastic on that WBT update. Whatever she's doing lately is working.
 
Oh I was emotional there about Dreamlover, Honey and #Beautiful missing the list and then I noticed Daydream Interlude was missing.
