Obviously not the best *EVER*, but I genuinely do love Mandy Moore's Coverage. Vocally I'd say it's her best album, pretty much all the covers are nicely done, and the tracklist introduced me to a bunch of songs I wasn't all that familiar with before. Not to get loony, but it honestly feels like much more of a genuine artistic statement than the cheap cash-in these things often are.

To be honest, as much as I love a shit cover, I've never really got on board with a whole album of covers. So any suggestions are appreciated.

I already own the Mandy one, oddly, VOR :disco: (haven't listened to it in years but Sense Working Overtime was a highlight)

I like She & Him's album of cover songs.

I suppose Annie Lennox's Medusa is one of the more famous ones, but I very seldom dig it out beyond No More I Love You's and Don't Let It Bring You Down, which are both sublime.

I'm intrigued to which ones (other than Our Last Summer) you didn't know prior. I guess Abba weren't that big in the States to be fair?

It was a joke :D I just copied the text form VoR's post.

ABBA weren't that big at the time in the US I guess, but they're very popular as a heritage artist, and I would say that most people would know most of their big hits, even ones that charted low at the time. Mamma Mia only got to 32, but most people know it more than many actual big hits of the 70s. The musical and movie definitely helped with that.
 
I really don't like covers albums. They just feel lazy to me. And sometimes they're contractual obligations - e.g. Tori Amos' Strange Little Girls (which I do enjoy to a certain extent).

I also like Bowie's Pin-Ups and Weezer's self-titled 'teal' album.

But I think that's about it. The George Michael one made me want to stick needles in my eyes.
 
I really liked Strange Little Girls, and Coverage. AND The ABBA Generation

I really was living for that ABBAMania covers album at the time :D actually has nobody mentioned Cher’s yet?
 
Oh and I really wanted to like West End Girls’ Petshopping, and I did as a concept. But they didn’t do an awful lot with the idea
 
I prefer compilation tribute albums by various artists rather than one artist doing covers.

The Stevie Wonder one called Conception was particularly good

 
Random covers used to be a great B-side idea. It’s very rare I’ve really loved a covers album.
