Only New York (and New Jersey because we flew to/from Newark).

I think that from an outsider view, people put a lot of emphasis on the state, while the rural/urban divide is much more important. Living in Atlanta is a lot more like living in New York than it is like living in rural Georgia. I've never been to Houston, but I presume it is similar
 
Austin is the one that is known for being liberal (and hipster), but I'm sure Dallas is too

My mate did one of the big highway drives across the Southern States. He reported some abnormal shit in some places.

I was driving home from 30A (a Florida beach area) through rural Alabama last week and there was a sign that said:

"TRUMP 2024. ITS NOT OVER YET. GEORGIA THIEVES FIND ANOTHER WAY TO 30A"

It made me a little nervous with my Georgia license plate and Biden sticker on my car

This all seems so insane until I think about where I live and realise that I'm a five minute drive from republican paramilitary murals, loyalist paramilitary murals, NO IRISH BORDERS ULSTER TILL DEATH murals, evangelical apocalyptic signs and the same five people who have been standing outside the city hall for a decade shouting about a flag.

I've been really fascinated with NI since I watched Derry Girls a few months ago. I went to Belfast a few years ago, but I really want to go back and see more (including these kind of things)

I love New York but found it a bit DIRTY and less livable compared to other cities like Chicago.

I want to go back to California to see San Diego.

And it really isn't as bad as that post makes it sound, as you've probably noticed. But there are definitely pockets, and recent events have amplified things a little.

What bits of Florida have you been to? I know it's quite on trend to hate it (and there are certainly parts I won't go to) but I enjoy Del Ray and Naples the most (opposite coasts). Miami scares me.
 
Only been to the 'famous' states with the major cities.

New York - Fun and super interesting, but super dirty.
California - Every American stereotype rolled into one state.
Illinois - Chicago is still my fave.
Hawaii - Rubbish.
 
It's funny, we trash America so much, but I really do love it. Sometimes I think I'm really basic for my growing fascination with the place, the states, the changing landscape; modern pop culture's relationship with America's evolution and history. And though I've not visited since 2014, on that trip I was really surprised by how kind and welcoming people were to three brown men and one brown woman driving across Route 66. @Soldi - yeah, bitch. I done did it.

most of the old people in my family live in south Florida now. So I’ve been there a lot, although only driven through Miami. My aunt lives in Naples so there. Also Disney world and the 30a area a couple of times. It’s all so close so we used to go all the time when I was a kid.
There are good parts, but for some reason the whole state just creeps me out.

I may be a bit skewed though, because all of the worst parts of my family have moved there, while the best parts are all elsewhere.

High crime rate, very industrial, smells bad, etc. I had to board a cargo ship and interview the crew there a few years ago. :D

I meant more why did you visit :D I’ve heard a lot about it. I’m morbidly curious about East St. Loui, Gary, and Flint
 
I’d love to travel through all states. I feel especially fascianted by the deep south because (I’m a white supremacist :eyes:) it’s just so odd.
 
My top 3:

Virginia (Richmond) - I lived there for 2 years so I have a soft spot for Richmond. Which isn’t the most exciting city but it’s lush.

New York - I visited twice and it was a thrill but then I don’t think living there would be feasible

California (San Francisco) - gorgeous city, we mostly stuck to the very tourist-y Bay Area

Flint has a nice coffee shop - had to go there for work (like Gary). It's about an hour north of me. Kalamazoo is also... an interesting place. Beautiful gowns.
 
@RJN what cities do you recommend in Georgia and neighborhoods in Atlanta? I have never been and I have a fascination with SAVANNAH and BUCKHEAD

We are planning a family trip along the East Coast in the next few years (Starting at Niagara Falls). I’ll make sure we pop down to Atlanta to say hello :disco:

Regarding the geography/set up of American cities; as a map/geography geek I love spending hours on Google earth browsing different places and it’s almost shocking how shitty some of the big ”New World” cities are.
 
My favourite place in America is definitely Anna Maria Island :disco:
 
I'm going to Portland, OR in August, which I'm quietly excited about
