Actually, I SAY encapsulation of joy, but this does the standard ABBA trick of sounding rip-roaringly joyous while actually being REALLY SAD. There's nothing in the lyrics that actually indicates that she ever GOT the man, and given the ad infinitum stalker-ish 'don't you wanna DANCE with me baby?'s in the middle eight she was basically the equivalent of that really desperate girl at the end of secondary school disco who's throwing herself at ANYBODY in the hope of getting somebody and failing miserably.
That said, with those ad libs she sounds like she's having the time of her LIFE getting rejected

I do love that her early uptempos sound like the best material the Pointer Sisters never recorded. How Will I Know beats this for pop perfection, but she crammed so many 10/10 moments in such a short time, the difference is almost negligible.

It just sounds like it was inspired by the disco wave of the late 70s. It doesn't sound original, that's for sure. But maybe I've heard so many songs that are like that since then that it just sounds underwhelming to me.

It's a bit of a Just Dance/Poker Face situation though - at first glance they sound pretty similar, but when it comes down to it it's a case of similar production and the odd snatches between the two, rather than a case of one or the other being generic or an outright rip-off.

Probably would have deserved my 10 in hindsight, I guess I'm so used to there being an "11/10" option in these polls, that I immediately went for the second highest. Also I do rather resent lazy DJs/programmers reducing The Eighties to "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go", "Take on Me", "Billie Jean" plus THIS. But that's hardly a fair objection against the song itself.

It reminds me of Chaka Khan. I Wanna Dance clearly took some sort of inspiration from I Feel For You, which is how I feel and I'm sorry if no one agrees with me. I do however feel as if there is an influence of disco in there - the energy in disco music seems slightly replicated in that song and doesn't sound like anything that would have been done in the 60s or early 70s.
But whatever, I have a SHIT MUSIC TASTE anyway so feel free to ignore me.

I love how the first three seconds of this song alone completely and unwaveringly ANNOUNCE what it is you're about to listen to. They are three not particularly exciting seconds of music in and of themselves, but as a declaration of forthcoming pop perfection, it must be amongst an elite club.
Overall, I'd probably say 'How Will I Know' just about tops this for me, but still an EASY 10/10.

I don't see the depressing element personally. One thing Whitney never did, for better or worse, was fragility. It's pure musical self-belief.

I would have given it an 8 but bumped it up to a 9 after reading this thread and realising it's a little bit crazy. I like happy songs that turn out to be miserable/insane in meaning.

I SUPPOSE I can see why people would say songs like 'How Will I Know' are technically better but when it comes to 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody', I simply have to disconnect from the fact that it's the default hen party hell ANTHEM for braindeads.
It's fantastic on EVERY level: the melody, the vocals, the key-change, the ad-libs. It's one of those songs that has become so woven into the fabric of popular music that people just accept it for what it is because they've heard it so many times. Familiarity breeds nonchalance - stepping back and re-examining it always changes my perspective on it.
