Who needs Wednesdays anyway?

I loved my degree. Amazing time of my life. Until recently utterly useless, but I couldn't move on to teacher training without it so whatever. My Masters was shit though.

Yeah education during a lockdown was fucking cack. Sat at home alone writing my dissertation was not how I shine academically (although I did anyway, it wasn't fun or satisfying and could have been better).

I'm thinking about a masters, but not until it is definitely in person. I just can't do online classes and pay attention

My master's was the best and most useful thing I've done for my career, just saying
Ironically despite everything I've made my life slightly easier by doing a Masters.

I always fancy a masters until I wake up and remember how much of chore writing assignments was as an undergraduate when my only concerns were a few hours in Tesco and fitting in night outs.

But maybe one day.

I really can't imagine there was a better time to be at uni than the early-00s. Everything was just CORRECT. The music was ace, nobody gave a shit about excessive drinking or drug use, nightclubs hadn't been turned into carpet shops yet, Hollyoaks was really on form...

It all just seems a bit shit these days. People are a bit worthy and abstinent and care about issues now, which we never did because we were raised in the 80s when nothing mattered.

It was more than fine when I went. I loved being a mature student and not give a shit about the politics. I just studied and played super hard in equal measure. I had a job as well!

For me it was the worst time of my whole academic life, I just couldn’t fit in anywhere. I still have nightmares about waking up and being back there
My undergrad felt wasted for the first two years. Only having a few hours at uni a week (English) meant nobody was that close, added to the fact that I lived with school friends and stayed in Belfast. Erasmus salvaged it in final year.

PGCE was way harder but actually felt like being part of a community. And we weren't even in uni for most of it.

The idea of doing a course now really intrigues me. I know as much as I'd want to be all business I'd be far too curious about living the lifestyle again.

I didn't live on campus and I barely touched the club nights. I was lucky that I made friends straight away and our group just kept growing. Also my course had over 100 on it, so there was plenty of folk to pick from. I just focused on heavily utilising the bargain pints in the various bars and writing the best fucking essays I could. I loved campus.

I really do want to do a masters (+ even further after maybe idk) when I complete my bachelors. I just think, WHY stop? It’s not a course that walks into a job straight after so there’s no real incentive to stop.

Equaully I’d have to do it part time if I do. I do want to start building up a career when I graduate and get out of the zero hour part time HELL.

That makes me sad.
The saddest point was probably in the first year and the flat I was thrown into agreed to go into town for my birthday, and during the pre-drinks in the student bar they were egging me on to drink a yard of beer, which I did and then immediately chucked it up all over myself. I went home to change and then meet them by the bus stop to go to the club, and when I got there I got a text from them saying they weren’t coming, so I just decided to go anyway on my own. When I was in the club this girl I knew from my course started talking to me and I told her it was my birthday and pretended my friends were somewhere in the club and I had just lost them, and just felt like such a loser as the lie left my lips.

Yeah, I really wanted to do a PhD, but matters of a practical nature have led me down a different path.

BASTARDS.

I'm hoping I get one of those honorary degrees for services to ket or something.
