Who's in need of a greatest hits album?

Either for the first time or an update to an old one?

Given their comeback thanks to streaming, it seems the future for legacy artists or indeed anyone at least three albums in is to have themselves a collection album on streaming. Moreso if you're a big deal. There's MONEY in it right now.

Beyonce and Rihanna always immediately spring to mind. Who else hasn't had one, or has had one and needs to do it better?

Rihanna and Taylor Swift are the obvious answers but would be too daunting to fit in one disc. And Rihanna's would be almost insult to injury since she hasn't released new material in six years.

Lady Gaga and Katy Perry would also go over nicely at this point in their careers.

Lana Del Rey is due for one but she is such an albums artist to me it wouldn't do her much justice.

She has only had two official GH’s. Design of a Decade back in 95 which was HUGE then Number Ones/ The Best in 2009 which bombed due to the fact America still hated her because she dared to show her nipple at the Super Bowl. I think if she repackaged and re released that now she would have a massive hit on her hands because the tide finally seems to have turned at last.
 
Charli XCX. She's at the end of her deal, 7 albums (well, for legal reasons, 5 albums and 2 mixtapes) and several non-album singles - 2LP/1CD with 20 tracks and a superdeluxe 3CD/DVD-BluRay edition with deep cuts, unreleased stuff from the XCX World era.

There’s also been the Icon one and the Japanese singles collection only a couple of weeks ago.

And since 2009, she’s had about three flop singles :D

I didn’t know about the Icon greatest hits or the Japanese Collection. I know she hasn’t had any big hits since then BUT she is definitely more favoured now in this supposedly fairer world we live in and nipple gate doesn’t seem to be shadowing over her like it was back 10 years or so ago. After the documentary, and her getting a standing ovation at the Billboard Awards this year it definitely looks like the tide has finally turned and again she is recognised as one of the all time greats. So I personally think if she released and promoted a GH now rather than releasing Black Diamond (coming soon) she would sell BUCKETLOADS. The previous GH in 2009-10 were released when she was unfairly hated and the new Japanese one I have no clue about, but it certainly doesn’t seem to have been pushed anywhere other than possibly Japan?
 
Made for Now and No Sleeep were minor US hits no (especially the latter I think? @VoR to confirm plz). I mean they were certainly bigger than anything by Mariah or Madonna in recent years on that side of the pond eh?

I do agree to a certain extent with @Rita - the conversation has shifted in the USA and certainly in the UK her Glastonbury set was very well received.

Mais bien sur I also agree to a certain extent with @Pipo - a GH with a certain angle would needed her.

And of course @Sheena raises some valid points in terms of genuine hits vs. 'minor' hits or 'this was good for a Diva in comparison to Mariah or Madonna.'

In conclusion, my entire post is really utterly useless in the context of the conversation here.

I had a look at Janet's number ones album last night and it's so throwaway... even worse than Design Of A Decade. She does need a COMPREHENSIVE double album of all the hits. There's enough from the 21C smattered about all those albums to include with the big 4 big early albums. Maybe a hits + favourites type thing.
 
The best Janet Jackson compilation remains Control: The Remixes.

I don't get any sense of an appetite for a new compilation from her in the UK, but presumably someone's decided there was in Japan, and if there genuinely is in the US, why not?
 
I don't want another Janet Jackson 'Greatest Hits' (although I would buy it) - I'd prefer deluxe expanded editions of her albums. Greatest Hits wise - Adele must be due one surely. I don't personally want that either, but it's only a matter of time isn't it?

I DO like HER. Her music just gets a bit annoying when you can't get away from it. (See also Ed Sheeran, although I DO NOT like him.)

I was going to say that Adele's albums have all been MASSIVE sellers and so a GH would mostly consist of stuff that everybody already owns with the obligatory new tracks tacked on as an incentive. I was going to question if there was a market for such a product, but then I asked myself who is still buying ABBA Gold and clearly there would be, even if it didn't include me.

:D I'm very sensitive when it comes to commenting on Adele on here. I critiqued the most-recent album and was "questioned", which is fine. I just try not to rock the boat.
 
Also I don’t think the purpose of Greatest Hits is the same as it was for years; they were primarily for gifting and for the fanz in the physical era. In the streaming era, they act as an easy go to for a mainstream audience; they’re like a quick access playlist of no filler. Look at The Beatles or Fleetwood Mac; all or most of their studio albums have been huge, but the collections in the streaming era are even bigger.

So basically all artists these days benefit from a collection album in their streaming catalogue. The bigger the artist, the bigger the benefit.
 
There is an art to nailing the selection of songs though. For every ABBA Gold there is a Design Of A Decade :(
 
Did Design Of A Decade have a different US tracklisting? That's the one I've got and I don't recall thinking the tracklisting was bad. Although it's been so long since I played it I have very little recollection of what is or isn't on it.

I just had to go and look at the track listing for 'Design of a Decade' because I remember it starting with 'Runaway' and then I just thought it was the chronological single releases (minus most of those released through Virgin Records) ending with 'Twenty Foreplay'. I'd forgotten it was a bit all-over-the-place. It's not the order I would have personally put them in, but that's getting WAY off topic now.
 
Didn’t it have only ONE song from janet.?

I just remember it missing a fair few songs and being randomly ordered but I could be wrong

I don’t think they got the licensing from Virgin for most of the janet singles. The US version only had “That’s the Way Love Goes” so it was basically just Control and Rhythm Nation plus TTWLG… a waste given the riches from janet. International markets at least had The Best Things in Life are Free (and Whoops Now :basil: )
 
Must be a label licensing issue then. Because the success of the following 2 studio albums and some key collab singles gave more than enough reason to fix that in the early noughties, and do a comprehensive set, and they still didn’t.
