My first contact with/experience of WHSmith was when living in Paris; there is one on Rue Rivoli which is basically a huge bookstore and I used to spend a lot of time and money there. I didn’t realise that they sold other things until I went to UK.

I’ll give it a high rate based on the books and because our local equivalents (7-eleven and Pressbyrån) are a disgrace.
you have 7-eleven in Sweden? Do they have hot dogs rotating(?) on a grill like ours do?

There's a big one on Sauchiehall Street and there's never anyone in it. The only time I've had to queue is in the Post Office at the back. The rest of the place is always stone dead. But I don't know where I'd get things like special editions of Mojo and Record Collector if it wasn't there.

I struggle to get my head around how the still EXIST on the high street.

At an airport must have been the last time I used them so I could get something to suck on (:ken:) whilst on the plane. I couldn’t tell you the last time I was on a train, and last time I was Queen Street Station in Glasgow didn’t HAVE a WH Smith anymore. No loss really.

I quite like the magazines they do for a tenner a pop on specific subjects like disasters or the industrial revolution. The rest of it's a bit shite.

Exactly - it's the musical equivalents I buy in there. I'm not going to get Record Collector's special about The Fall in the fucking CO-OP, am I?

Absolutely terrible, disgustingly overpriced; reliant on the sick, their relatives and NHS staff with their omnipresent shops in hospitals.

AWFUL.

They absolutely take advantage of vulnerable people - hospital patients, Ellie...

I heard their new business plan is to open pop up shops at the sites of major accidents and increase the price of water and Kit Kats to a sensible £74.

They have WH Smith in HOSPITALS??
Yup. They refurbished our main hospital, adding WHSmith, Costa, M&S and a ladies fashion emporium (possibly Blouse Barn, can't confirm).

Having only had a charming but crappy FRIENDS OF THE HOSPITAL stand before, it's an upgrade, but epic ripoff, especially Smiths.

That's how they stayed afloat during the first recession and they've continued on with that model. It's disgusting to be honest. Preying on the sick, their families, and underpaid NHS staff.

OMG we have all of those but we also have .... wait for it...

:disco: SUBWAY :disco:

Our main railway station is the worst. WHSmith (x2!), a Pumpkin cafe and a couple of shitty cafes and stands. I was agog (@RJN), to see poor shitty Ipswich had a bloody Greggs. What luxury!

And there we have an answer to the question, everyone was thinking, but no-one was saying.

I'll often bring a packed lunch on a trip out, unless I'm feeling flush and I might get a gross wine and a Maccies.

A picnic possibly but never somewhere with SHOPS. I usually just nip in for a bottle of wine and a packet of discos.

We take packed lunches on our walks of course.. not just proper walking holidays I mean, but also if we're doing a National Trust walk type thing because SOME PEOPLE are like COBETTE I suppose and won't let me enjoy my overpriced soup / sandwich at a National Trust cafe + lots of overpriced TAT.

Also if we bring a PACKED LUNCH what do we have to complain about? We can’t complain about the poor variety, the overpriced rubbish, or the wine akin to VINEGAR.

To be fair, I'm a greedy fucking pig, that will demolish my packed lunch in the first hour and then stop for food ANYWAY.

Also I don’t like carrying alcohol on my person and I can’t have it smashing in my HERMES. How am I meant to get to my CIGARETTES?

I fucking love getting a bottle(s) of wine in London with a plastic cup and taking a pew or a wander, getting slowly hammered. It's street drinking, but classy.

Is that not ILLEGAL? Or is that just in parts of Scotland?
