It would make money for sure, but it doesn't feel like the MOMENT it could have been.

After In The Heights flopping, I imagine the purse strings are going to be a little tighter. It will be interesting to see how West Side Story fares.

In the Heights was based on a fairly unknown musical with no big name stars. It was trading on the Lin Manuel Miranda name.

This is going to be huge, you fools

There's a whole mummy/granny/kiddy audience out there that have never seen it for a start

I can’t remember what I’m having deja vu about in this thread, but we do always seem to get this “I can’t imagine who would care about this adaptation of one the longest running billion dollar musicals of all time” moment :D

I mean Cats should’ve worked but it’s a pretty weird fucking story and it seems like they fucked it (I haven’t seen it though).

I just don’t know why there’s an argument over why a studio would “gamble” on it

AND THEN TO SAY they should adapt a fresher property, like Kinky Boots, based on a 2005 film :D of all the examples

I'm also going to go out on a limb (:eyes:) and predict that the Avatar sequels will do absolutely huge/record breaking box office like the first one did :tongueout:

Kinky Boots IS a fresher property. The original movie isn’t as widely known outside the UK and the musical actually improved on it. The subject matter is bang on trend right now, and it would likely be a mid-budget production if they made one. Actually quite shocked they made a film of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie first.

Cats never should have worked at all. Some things just don’t translate well from stage to screen unless you make some major changes, and it doesn’t take a genius to realise that. I think they’re going for a Hamilton film now and I just can’t see that working either.

People were dumb enough to go to the first one in DROVES so it’s absolutely plausible.

It’s not like Wicked is unadaptable. It’s based on a book that was semi based on a book that was made into a film too many times.

the only challenge is making sure it’s the right colour of green CGI

Wicked for me feels like one of those examples where a good story is a good story. Plus the songs are very strong by and large. If you think of what works in successful musical adaptations it’s those big musical moments. Wicked has so much potential. You sort of feel like even if it’s a misstep and a missed opportunity, there’ll be enough from the music and (assuming they throw a budget at it, and you need to) visually stunning, it’ll still get a big reaction.

The Greatest Showman was mocked by critics until they suddenly realised that the vast majority of people loved it…

I actually don’t think anything in the movie could top that video of the rehearsal/audition in front of the execs. Now that is a musical moment!

Oh I think the Greatest Showman music is (basic but) pretty great - and its only saving grace!

It doesn’t help that they’ve been done to absolutely death

There is that. When the likes of Chicago and Les Mis came out I'm not sure everyone was already quite so attached to the broadway versions the way most people associate Defying Gravity with Idina and Kristen. It's a big tree to climb.

I mean it’s gonna be shit so why the rush

I’m so confused, I love Cynthia Erivo and she’s got the voice but she’s 34! And Ariana is just terrible.

Doomed project.

Love that there's a poll in a thread started 7 years ago about a film that has been and will probably always be stuck in Hollywood limbo.

I mean there’s a director and cast. It’s happening.

Oh wow! Not sure what my take on this is really… I don’t think Ariana is right for Glinda (Dove Cameron ROBBED) but Cynthia is phenomenal while also being extremely annoying/too old and I can’t wait to hear her sing those songs. Glad it’s moving forward anyway.

Now please no James Corden as Dr Dillamond

Someone said when they saw Cynthia’s picture in relation to the film they assumed she was playing Madame Morrible :D

also

I hate Cynthia Erivo so I can't wait for this to IMPLODE :D

Ariana is a dream but a bonkers choice for Glinda

I can't WAIT to see how this turns out :eyes:

My God, isn't Elphaba supposed to be about 18-24 during the course of the story? It's fine for the stage, but this is like Stockard Channing all over again.

I think the age of the players matters much less in Wicked. It's a fantastical setting and not the realistic high school of Dear Evan Hansen.

They are very mismatched though which is more of a risk. I can't picture them doing For Good AT ALL.
