People who hate musicals should not be allowed to publish reviews of musicals. Just like my opinion of Fantasy Epics or whatever would generally be pretty moot for most straight men.
 
FFS, I just got home and I would have gone the other route if I’d known. Cynthia Erivo is in Greenwich at the Royal Observatory doing some press just up the road.

So we cut the two driving forces of the plot, as well as the character who, while admittedly hardly being a big part, essentially holds the Wizard Of Oz/Wicked story together?!

Not quite the riffs upon riffs I feared it would be, though definitely some choices none the less

Absolutely YES to Ariana. Uhm to Cynthia. She's obviously an amazing singer, and I am probably too used to stage Elphabas, but it isn't quite clicking for me. It is very clean, she riffs where she doesn't need to, then throws other lines away. Though her reading of Not That Girl is excellent, it really suits her voice.

It seems that only Elphaba and Glinda were cast with singing ability in mind. :D

The instrumentation though is very :disco:

Idina getting to kind of do her Defying Gravity riff is very :disco:
 
What riff? The one that's been in every piece of promo for the last six months or whatever? I'm sure it's still in tact and still detestable.

Theres two different versions I’ve heard across the various promos and trailers. So was holding out hope the final version was more in line with what everyone is going to expect :(
 
How does the Defying Gravity riff compare to the definitive Kerry Ellis version?
 
I'll give Kerry a great No Good Deed.

She's best well away from Defying Gravity though.
 
I really should have gone to see Lucie Jones as Elphaba :(
 
I'm trying to remember the Elphabas I've seen. I think it was Alexia Khadime, Rachel Tucker twice, and an understudy I can't remember the name of. All great but Alexia absolutely phenomenal.
 
I first saw Alexia in Book of Mormon and was underwhelmed, so I was horrified when she was cast as Elphaba. I went once when her understudy was on (I THINK it was Laura Pick) and she was great. But I first saw Alexia last year finally and she really was great.

I honestly can’t remember which ones I’ve seen. Idina 5 times, Kerry Ellis multiple times. Definitely Emma Hatton and possibly Alice Fearn?
 
Can’t believe they didn’t listen to PUBLIC OUTRAGE of literally TENS OF PEOPLE and fix defying gravity.

I’m not going :evil:
 
I saw Alexia but way back in 2008 and she was quite raw then - I'd have been interested to see her in her latest stint (although not actually enough to get tickets in fairness).

Apart from Alexia, I've seen Rachel Tucker twice (the ultimate in my opinion), Lucie Jones, and a few of the touring ones whose names I can't quite remember.

I did enjoy seeing the Elphaba switch at the interval during the tour once. As it happened, the main one was very well suited to Elphaba at school, and the standby one was slightly more mature and polished and perfect for older Act Two Elphaba.
 
I can only remember Kerry and Idina as names. I think I've seen one other (possibly that Dutch actress whose name I won't even attempt to spell) in the West End, and then I think three UK tours.

I was so lucky to see it with all the original cast on Broadway. I had no knowledge of the show before we went, but discovered it was on while we were there. Couldn't twist Mr L's arm to go, so got a midweek last minute ticket and went on my own one night while he went to the cinema to see something I wasn't interested in.
 
It really is amazing how it is still packing them in all these years on, particularly in the huge Apollo Victoria, which is one of the biggest theatres in London, isn't it? I love the building architecturally, but it's way too cavernous for my liking.
 
I wonder what outfit it'll take to make Cynthia realise her stylist hates her
 
God Cynthia is so fucking earnest :D

I remember when she was on Graham Norton a few years ago. It was the episode where Olivia Colman ripped into Jack Whitehall’s bad American accent in some film, everybody’s happily chuckling away and Cynthia just kept humourlessly interjecting “No, he WAS doing an accent actually!”

Lighten up luv!

 
I listened to the soundtrack last night ready to be hateful and I have to say, they do sound great. If I can be at all critical I would have liked a bit more grit in Cynthia’s voice in the appropriate places, but overall they really sound great and the adlibs didn’t bother me in the context of the full songs, not even THAT note.
