Gladiator domestic opening is fine but tepid and lower than its tracking in recent weeks - studio will be hoping it legs out at home and has a good international run (the signs of which for the latter are pretty good). The budget is £250m so it is going to need it.

There's only ever really been stunt casting in the roles of Morrible and Fiyero I think, maybe the Wizard. Can't think of any Elphabas or Glindas who've not just been trained musical theatre performers.
 
I’m can’t even think of specific stunt casting as Morrible. There have been famous names, but all have been seasoned theatre actresses. Most shocking to me was Mark Curry’s lengthy runs as the Wizard, as I only knew him as an 80s Blue Peter presenter. But he’d also hardly be classed as stunt casting.

Maybe they’ve done it for the US tours, but none I know of in the UK.
 
You couldn't stunt cast either of the two leads. Singing Elphaba has written off more than one professionally trained actress, and Glinda requires performing some high soprano acrobatics.

Morrible and the Wizard would be a possibility, but I think this is a case where the show is the star and it doesn't need it, especially now that the film has kicked it into a higher stratosphere.

Thinking of the other “big” long running shows, maybe Les Mis is the only one I can think of that ever stunt casts. Phantom, The Lion King and even Mamma Mia never do it either.

Mamma Mia could definitely get away with it, but it just doesn't need to.

Jennifer Ellison's turn in Chicago must have put casting teams off!
 
I can't possibly imagine a world in which Jessie J got the part of Elpheba worked again.

I don't know if this qualifies as stunt casting, but wasn't Rue McClanahan cast as Morrible quite early into the original Broadway run?
 
I saw it again tonight for the second time and it was probably better than the first. Truly exceptionary
 
I finally saw it tonight and loved everything about it.
It didn't drag at all and it was nice to get to know the characters better without rushing from setpiece to setpiece.

I'd love to go to the sing-along version when it's released for Christmas.
 
Awards Daily currently has this listed as being in considered contention for 9 Oscar nominations:

Best Picture
Best Actress – Cynthia Erivo
Supporting Actress - Ariana Grande
Screenplay – adapted
Costumes
Sound
Production Design
Visual Effects
Hair & Makeup

With Directing, Editing & Cinematography as long shots. They also note that it will benefit from doing well at the Golden Globes, where musicals have more room to play for big prizes. This often boosts Oscar momentum, if the film is good, which it is (allegedly - still haven't seen it!)
 
She’s clearly not straight when she’s fannying around with sorcery, when she could be in Fiyero’s bed with an apple in her mouth and an arsehole gushing like Niagra Falls.

anyone spaffing 250m on a Ridley Scott movie is insane!
 
I don't mean this as rude but Cynthia Erivo absolutely has mental health issues and I hope she gets or is getting the help she needs, because she's about to become really famous and I'm not sure it's going to go well for her.
