Mandy and I have been on 3 cruises, 3 different cruise lines.
I was hugely sceptical at first and just assumed it would be like a floating Butlins.
My reviews:
Cruise 1 was on Celebrity Silhouette. A stunning and classy ship but not too pretentious.
Incredible food and service, beautiful cabin, and we got to see places I'd never have thought to visit before.
We went to Copenhagen, Tallin, Kristiansand, Helsinki, St Petersburg and Skagen.
We had a balcony room, waking up up 3am to sunsets at see was one of the most beautiful experiences ever.
And the clientele were pretty much all 40 - 80 year olds, mostly couples, we saw one child. All very friendly, nice and chatty at dinner. But it was a big ship so hard to really remember people.
The shows and entertainment were amazing.
Cruise 2 was on Royal Caribbean with friends doing the Norwegian Fjords.
Room was pleasant, just a window room.
Food was much lower quality but vast amounts of it. It was full of Americans and the restaurants and buffets very much catered for them and their portion sizes.
Entertainment was very ott, like a better version of Butlins, a bit too "come everyone let's join in" for me.
Clientele were a totally different class to Celebrity. Young groups and couples, drunk at 10am, vomiting at midday, children running around screaming, no one has any manners at the buffet. Just a real turn off for me.
Location was stunning but we could have done it on any ship.
Cruise 3 was on Fred Olsen, to Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Bruges.
Tiny ship, much more old fashioned, spotlessly clean, bar and waiting service was absolutely first class. They all knew our names by the end of day 1, we would walk into any bar or restaurant and they would all call us by name and bring over "our drinks" which they had memorised.
Food was much less varied and smaller portions but probably the best quality out of all the cruises.
Clientele were amazing. Us and one other couple were the youngest by about 40 years and that's exactly how I like it. All the oldies gravitated towards us for a gossip, asking us about our relationship, finding out if we enjoyed the red light district, getting drunk with us.
Entertainment wasnt the best, it was very "British" but we learnt to love it.
I personally highly recommend cruising if you want to see multiple places in one holiday, like good food and good service. But be very careful what cruise line you choose.
