I know there’s been some discussion in the tv thread, but thought this warranted a thread of its own, having just binged the past three episodes and got up to date. What do people think?

It’s SPECTACULARLY silly, I grant you, but relatively a) entertaining and b) scary in equal measures. And I do want to do terrible things to poor, grieving Viktor.

Oh and fuck me, Anne Reid really is an astonishing actress.

Discuss.
 
And yes, it's really quite good. Considering how pretty tripe dramas like The Bay and Cleaning Up got about 5 or 6m viewers, how this isn't managing half of that with a strong writing and acting pedigree, plus a decent time slot is quite baffling.

Does it do better online? I’m presuming we’re only going to get one series as a result...

The figures I post in the other thread include catch up for 7 days after broadcast. The first week I seem to recall it was just outside the top 20, but since then it hasn't been particularly close.

YES! I think it's the downturned mothh doing things to me.

This is utterly brilliant and I do find some of the more believable points (nuclear threat, drones taking over jobs) really quite scary.

Russel Tovey is giving his best and most natural performance here that I've seen him in.

Shame. Although I imagine it wouldn’t work as an ongoing series anyway.

Yeah, I warmed to him very much in this when I’m not normally much of a fan. Still would with him too, mind. God I’m a slut...
 
I'm pleased that I still find Tovey pretty repellent. Still not as bad as Kinnear in those cycling shorts, though.

Was wondering the same as I was typing out my post about Rory Kinnear and put him in the I'LL GIVE HIM A GO CAMP.

I always thought gays fancied him because he was gay too but attainable. I've never QUITE got it, but wouldn't say no either. :lolly:

It’s honestly such an incredible piece of television (minus the lapses into silliness like Jessica Hynes & her niece being SUPER SPIES). The bit where Emma Thompson is like ‘they’ll have me killed’ was terrifying. Is it bad that I felt NOTHING when Russell Tovey snuffed it though?

Celeste is absolutely iconic.

It’s so odd that there’s been such little fanfare about it.
 
I actually did feel sad when Russell died. I thought their relationship was actually quite lovely and I HATE gays on my tv screen generally.

Yes, the cyber daughter subplot is the worst thing for me. The ridiculousness of her just casually being able to login to what her dad was up to without him being able to stop her because he’s in her phone book :D
 
I saw the trailer for this yesterday (we’re getting it in a few weeks), so is Emma Thompson playing a successful version of Katie Hopkins?

She’s basically a hypothetical Katie Hopkins having a Trump-esque rise to power.
 
Anyway I’ve been loving this. I wasn’t totally sold on Russell’s relationship with Viktor for a few episodes, but then my heart was in my mouth for the last 15 minutes of episode 4.

Then last week went a bit far into daft sci-fi territory for me but I’m still keen to see how it all ends. Also shocked at the low viewing figures considering the cast and creatives.

SURELY Anne Reid’s character must be at least 103 by now though!

Emma Thompson is brilliant. what's her dialect in this? the same as Cheryl Tweed? it's half the fun
 
It’s more generic Northern than Cheryl, who is a Newcastle accent
 
I'm genuinely QUITE EXCITED for the finale later :disco:

Whilst it's bombed in the ratings, I can see this eventually doing OK as a word of mouth slow burner providing it manages to stay on iplayer for long enough. It definitely feels like it could be a reasonably landmark piece of TV in 10 years time (much like Queer As Folk is).

This is quite brave for the Beeb to commission with obvious parallels with Farage and Boris, and it's great they've held their nerve and not moved it around the schedule. It's also a mainly female/minority cast which is a big thing for 9pm even nowadays.

In regards to the show itself, Celeste is obvious an absolute icon - T'Nia Miller surely MUST be in line for much higher profile roles after this. Ditto Anne Reid in regards to icon - DAMEHOOD NOW.
 
Having said ALL of that, the only people I've seen talk about it online and in real life is GAY MEN so perhaps that says something about the ratings flop :D
 
Didn't Cucumber perform fairly woefully in the ratings too?

I found that series largely dreadful so my interest in this is pretty minimal. Is it similar in tone?
 
Not usually my cup of tea, but have thoroughly enjoyed it throughout, I thought it was going to be more sci-fi, so was pleasantly surprised by the human drama aspect of it. Some really good performances from those mentioned above. Looking forward to the finale

I only know about it because some of our national papers were raving about it so who knows, maybe it'll strike gold ABROAD

better enjoy it before the TARIFFS kick in!
 
is the finale next/this week? :o they can't possibly wrap everything up in one episode!
 
omg in the last few moments i was shouting at the TV “WHAT ABOUT CELESTE AND VIKTOR” :D Thankfully everybody was basically FINE!

I really enjoyed that final. Completely ridiculous, full of plot holes (that they very obviously tried to explain with 1 line explanations through out :D ) but also tense as anything with all characters having quite a satisfying story-arc in the end.

That finale ruined the whole thing for me. I was just about dealing with it until the end of the last episode but what a lot of unmitigated SHITE that ending was. And it completely ignored Viktor to the point he didn’t really matter.

Anne Reid’s speech was the only saving grace.

It felt a bit rushed but i enjoyed on the whole. Like just about every episode it had me in tears :D:manson:
