this is my earliest memory of a song that gave me genuine goosebumps and was probably my song of the 80s (although these days I probably like a hundred 80s songs more)



this was my favourite song through the 90s



Then it was this for a VERY LONG TIME

Unfortunately, the first song to really make me open-mouthed with delight, shock and wonder was by The Smiths so I won't link it up cos Moz will get money, however little, and fuck that guy. But "What Difference Does It Make" absolutely floored me. I was 10 and I was already 'trouble' (ADHD - diagnosed at 7 or 8 but no-one really knew how to manage it back then...we still don't) so when Morrissey sang "and now you make me feel so so ashamed because I've only got two hands", I knew exactly what he meant; that feeling of never being enough for people. I remember being like "yes! yes! that! someone gets it!". That's what makes it so disappointing; Morrissey was once the voice of the outsider, now he's just another gatekeeper. The twat.

Still, all praise Marr, Rourke and Joyce. In a quieter moment, I can recall who Morrissey used to be too. And I remember feeling understood for the first time in my life.

1. The entire Grease soundtrack, especially Born to Hand Jive. I must have been about 5 when I first saw it and did not stop listening to that tape until I was about 12

... and I couldn't even give you an actual favourite song in all honesty since hitting my teens. It's very much mood based. For a long time it's been What a Good Boy by Barenaked Ladies mixed with Stranger In Moscow, but they're hardly ones to listen to when in a good mood.

I don’t think he’s been my absolute #1 ever either, but he’s stayed up there with 3 songs (Rain, Gold and D&P) for as long as I’ve known them. Plus he’d have another half dozen in a longer list. Which would be impossible!
