The whole of 1986 feels pretty unlikely, in retrospect. You don't really get much of a sense of a Sound of the year.

That song was properly wretched. And yes, the numerous random re-releases does speak to the general downturn in quality.

A shame though that Cock Robin song wasn't bigger over here, I do like that one.

It was the start of Levi's adverts creating huge hit singles, something that would go on for over a decade. I think The Real Thing's revival was also TV linked. But I still can't remember why "Rock Lobster" was reissued.
 
I've a feeling it might have been one of those songs that became BIG IN THE CLUBS and crossed over

There was a real DEARTH of music to dance to in the 80s until HOUSE arrived. I think the 12" of TAINTED LOVE was played CONTINUALLY for about TEN YEARS
 
I think I always assumed Jermaine Stewart was female.

1986 even made the Human League DRAB.

I remember Johnny Marr having a grump with The Housemasters as he felt "Happy Hour" was a smiths rip off. Should have been the point where he realised that Mozzer was a bit of a liability because Tha Moz could never have written something as fun, sarcastic and as universal as "Happy Hour".

I had no recollection of that last Wham single being a double A-side...my memory suggested it was an EP of some sort.
 
Nope. My memory refuses to find any reference to Midnight Star whatsoever.
 
Hollywood Beyond actually sounds great...thumps and grinds its way along rather nicely.
 
1986 is difficult to take in anything but fairly small doses. That bloody awful theme music doesn't help.

She's '88. I had her on both my Now 12 and Greatest Hits of 1988 cassettes.

I thought the Friday episode was one of the better ones lately. Shame one dreadful number one was only swapped for thrilling old Boris.
 
Aww, I liked that Boris Gardiner record. Weirdly my aunt did as well. She said the lyrics were "embarrassing" but she loved the rhythm.

No, it's the same songs. I think the only songs different from last week was Cutting Crew and Darryl Hall, which were both in the breakers.

No wonder viewing figures were declining fast as half the acts are on video rather than in the studio.
 
"Some Candy Talking"....worth considering how thoroughly unlikely a hit this was in 1986. I had a 7" double pack singe with an acoustic EP on the second single.

Funny how Long and Read both looked to one side as if they were going to be onstage and then they just cut to the video, mind you.
 
That comment from Janice about Five Star: "they never seem to go away!" seemed a bit pointed. :D
 
They didn't though. They seemed to release a single about every six weeks until everyone was TOTALLY FUCKING SICK OF THEM
