The B-Side ‘I’ve Never Met a Nice South African’ was much better.
 
I don't really like the Robert Palmer video, but those girls were utterly iconic.

Not that Invisible Touch or Holding Back the Years are especially bad songs, just performed by CUNTS.
 
I remember my mother was OBSESSED with I Can't Wait at the time. At the time I remember thinking she was way too old for such business. She was 39 :bruised:

To be honest most of the 1986 editions have been a bit hit and miss. More miss than hit. 1986 was the year that I started to drift away from Top Of The Pops and watching them again on BBC4 I can see why. The music is often uninspired, too many oldies and videos and the half hour running time makes the programme look disjointed. By mid 1987 I had stopped watching the programme altogether. For me back then it was all about Channel 4's The Chart Show which at the time was shown on a Friday. That programme moved to ITV in January 1989 and also moved to being shown on a Saturday. I didn't really ever return to watching TOTP on a regular basis but I watched The Chart Show nearly every week until the programme ended in August 1998.
 
I remember getting fed up with TOTP when The Chart Show arrived - its original Friday evening Channel 4 incarnation was essential viewing and perfectly timed for me - after school, after teatime, and at the beginning of the weekend.
 
The start of TOTPs decline was the half-hour slot. Once they started having bands on with new releases that weren't actually in the charts around 1992-ish, it just became too conservative and predictable.

Obviously I was forced to have the cassettes thanks to evil Britannia Music Club but I can’t say I have any lingering affection for Gloria Estefan. I’m not sure I had much THEN
 
Ugh, Britannia.

Buy six albums (four of which you don't actually want) for the price of one, and then spend the next two years flicking through the measly monthly pamphlet, desperately trying to find an album you'd like even one track from, and paying about four quid more than you would in Woolies for the privilege.

I'm quite sure I still owe them a debt of about twenty quid from the early 90s.

It's not one of Bowie's best, it must be said. Funny period and an utterly duff follow up to the brilliant "Absolute Beginners".
 
1986 special effects and general computer graphics are fucking annoying.

What a beige/ irritating episode.

They showed almost all of "Marlene On The Wall" as a breaker....great song mind you.
 
It's Immaterial - that's a good 'un too. It's bloody difficult to mime spoken stuff too so, y'know, props. The follow up "Ed's Diner" was the better record but flopped. Twice.
 
George Michael looks really unhappy. I mean, I know it's not exactly a toe-tapper of a tune but he has that "get me out of here" look about him.

(not helped by the fact that the sound on this episode was a bit wonky...A Different Corner is so sparse that it really showed up)
