In a couple of weeks this song will be 2 years old. How does it stand up against her biggest hits in hindsight?

I think it's aged really well. The disco-y production (although it could've been more committed) is pretty timeless and still sounds fresh, the chorus is a monster and it feels like it could've been a great blueprint for her sound - instead, Witness happened.

It and Bon Appetit are both firmly nestled in my Katy top 10, possibly top 5. I'll give it a 9.

Meh. Bon Appetit was much better.

I do like the "so put your rose-colored glasses on and party on" bit.

i can't believe i'm giving the song with the cringiest line ever (stumbling around like a wasted zombie) a 10. the backing track is that good. i (vividly) remember having a proper moment to it one cold night, walking doily down the street high as can be.

I like it. Surprisingly, “Roar” is making its way up my Katy top 20 these days after I despised it for years.

As for the Witness era, I’m more of a “Tsunami” fan, and “Bon Apetit” is fun too but never go back to them really these days

I think it's great and I much prefer this and Swish Swish to Roar. I still don't get how Roar was such a hit.

Roar is a tremendous pop song. Melody and hooks for days. It straddles just the right line between basic and anthemic. Surely its hit status cannot be a mystery to you.

Yeah it’s lowest common denominator, but its time away from radio has revealed some charms though

I'd have beem far more surprised if Roar HADN'T been huge.

I like this song but for me it’s frustrating because it feels like it’s going to hit a more euphoric and anthemic peak than it does. Still a solid 8 though.

8 for me.

Nearly a 9. To be fair, I'd only rate about 3 of her songs in this region. I 'like' enough of her singles, but she is very much a 7/10 every single rather than having too many complete bangers.

Witness really was a rotten record. Just listening back to it now and apart from 'Roulette', 'Swish Swish' and 'Chained to the Rhythm' I don't think I like anything on it.

Not that she's ever been a great album artist...

Peacock to die though

NO!

I like my mediocre weak vocalists to have some self awareness. @Suedey I agree about the album thing but Teenage Dream was the closest she's been to achieving it, she did release 8 singles from it after all. Her best reviewed album has been Prism though but I think that's weak as fuck, especially towards the end where she goes all Christian Pop on us :zombie:

I really like this

I know it wasn’t a massive number 1 hit but it’s spotify numbers suggest it did much better than it’s given credit for

Agree - Teenage Dream is definitely her best album. Yes the whole 8 singles thing was Janet Jackson RN1814 for the '00s in the USA - however, let's not forget that two of those 8 singles were Birthday and TGIF (SHIT & shit). And also weren't Wide Awake and Part Of Me not on the original release? So Jancel kinda wins..

I think Chained is the best thing she’s ever done and I’m no fan. The video really is FANTASTIC

I haven’t listened to any of Witless yet, but it’s ready on a playlist, as soon as I get bored of BTS

Hun, Birthday was from Prism.

Teenage had:
California Girls
Teenage Dream
Firework
E.T.
Last Friday Night
The One That Got Away
Hummingbird Heartbeat (Australia Only)
Not Like The Movies (I SWEAR this was a single somewhere)
* Part of me
*Wide Awake
