One thing I DO miss about the 80's is random reggae records being a proper hit, especially in the summer. We can't be that far away from Aswad now which is pretty much the last.
 
I don't remember this Boy George record at all - not surprised, his Holly Johnson impression on it is rotten and the song is so generic, I'm struggling to think exactly what it was ripped off from because there are too many options. Grim.
 
Some of these episodes are absolutely rotten. Is it any wonder I was looking outside the charts by now. 14 was the age my admiration for The Fall turned into full-on love and, watching these episodes, I'm not surprised.

I;m going to lose Moop points here but "Sugar Mice" by Marillion is a great song. The exhaustion is palpable - even when it comes up for the guitar solo, it sounds worn out by its own sadness. Makes sense that Fish would bolt shortly after this.
 
How did no-one realise Beastie Boys were an outright pisstake in '87? They're the Marx Brothers spoofing LA rawk/rap/beach culture. Some grim lyrics tho'.
 
I never saw the live performance of True Faith at the time - must have been the week were on holiday that year. A truly classic single.
 
There's something a bit paedo about "Toy Boy".

Every day of the week, apparently. Even Craig David chilled on Sunday. I hope the poor kid escaped.
 
Oh fuck off, Wet Wet Wet...can't cope any more, have to stop now. Post "True Faith" comedown is too severe.
 
As much as I enjoyed True Faith (obvs), New Order are a wilfully unengaging group to watch.

That was part of the charm for me. The absolute lack of presentation in an era where style and content had merged into one. I related to their awkwardness and their ordinariness in the face of the era of big hair, greased-up dancers and shoulder pads.

Turns out quite a lot of it was their weird personal dynamic. At this remove, that matters little.
 
I could relate to it, but I wanted escapism - not a band who half looked like bored librarians.
 
Yeah, considering the heights of brilliance New Order reached on record, their live performances left a lot to be desired.

I saw them back in the late 90s, but that was on a festival stage, rather than a studio and I don't recall any specific problems. But I was very very stoned.

Whereas 1987 was the beginning of the golden era of pop music for me! Absolutely sublime!
 
Marti Pellow really has felt like a constant intrusive presence, and we are only two singles in. I imagine the directors got quite fed up with him marching all round the stage every week.

Him from Then Jericho was sporting the rattiest ponytail. I have to say I don't mind their singles though.

Wonderful Life remains very good, even if the live performance was not totally confident. That jacket had quite the shoulderpads too.

Presumably this was OR WASN’T ‘I Just Don’t Have The Heart’. God that was shockingly tinny, even by SAW standards, although obviously I bought it. Still, very much one of her few career highlights, with ‘Some People’ obviously being THE career highlight :disco:

Some People was in the countdown on the Thursday show. Its presence in 12'' Extended form on a Hi-NRG CLASSICS compilation does please me greatly.

When we get the compilation of the year shows before they start showing the individual episodes, do we get performances from the Mike Smith etc ones?

It really is infuriating, and I'm still amazed that SARAH BLOODY GREENE has the right to deny us.

It's alright until she starts CATERWAULING. Sometimes LESS is MORE (as shown by the lovely Mr Vearncombe). I think if someone else had done it it might have turned out quite LISTENABLE.

She's tiny (yet still matched Prince for height). I once read that Prince would only work with acts who didn't tower over him.

In the "I can't believe she's that old" stakes, Sheena turned 60 yesterday (27/04). If she was still living in Scotland she'd now qualify for a free bus pass...
 
I don't think I've posted this before... there's a great archive of loads of Top Of The Pops editions from 1967 to the recent ones that have been shown on BBC4 at https://mega.nz/#F!h0snQACa!uiNNqosfbdrfzODHsE1clw

From 1976 onwards there should be a complete collection. And they are all downloadable if you want to save them on your computer. Some of the earlier ones are of dodgy quality as they are taken from home collections. The only problem is sometimes you have to wait for an episode to load, it's not exactly the fastest site in the world for streaming.
