So we got our tv just under 7 years ago. It's a Samsung smart TV and it's beginning to play up and needs replacing. I think TVs should last much longer than 7 years but Mr Star is surprised it's lasted as long as it has! So who is right??

10 years and working perfectly fine, except for some buttons in the remote control, but I'm gonna raplace it for a new one and voilá.

I'm shocked someone thinks 7 years for a tv is a lot, seriously? How often do you change your fridge or washing-machine?
 
My washing machine is 15 years old :disco:

I was really cross that I had to replace the telly after 7 years last year just because the fucking APPS stopped working as they don't update themselves
 
Our main TV is about 5 years old. The one before lasted about 15 years. I can't say I've given how long one should last much thought, but I'd probably say 10 years is reasonable.

See he mentioned this to his work mates and they all seem to think similar to him! I just think it's a lot of money to be paying out every few years.
 
Just over 2 and a half years but it was an old one my brother wasn't using any more. Dunno how long he had it for before he passed it along.

See? I expect a washing machine to last less than a tv, specially in a family with kids, where you use it so often. I bought everything new 10 years ago and didn't have to replace a single electrical appliance, but with some of them it's a different story in a large family.
 
I think our washing machine is about 18 years old. But then as Alla says, it's only used once or twice a week. I'm guessing Star's is used at least twice as much.
 
1 year. I think. Previous one was 7-8 years old. It worked fine, but I wanted a shiny new one. :)
 
Samsung Smart TV and it’s 5 years old. I bought it when I moved into my flat. It’s still perfectly fine, although I’m a bit jealous as I just got a new one for my mum a few weeks ago and it’s much better than mine but I have no excuse to get rid as there’s nothing technically wrong with it.

It was weird because mum got last year’s model which was a good half the price compared to the latest model. I asked why and the shop just said that most people want the latest one. Still a bit confused because as far as I’m concerned, surely unlike computers and phones, TV technology doesn’t really progress as quickly, or does it?

It’s got to the point that every TV needs at least an external sound bar though, hasn’t it? With them being so thin, the built-in sound is absolutely rubbish.
 
i don't remember the last time i shared an apartment with a tv... probably a good 10 or more years ago?
i watch everything on tv and now i think about it i have never actually purchased a tv.
 
I am a complete and utter technical novice. My ex loved his gadgets so we got the new curve tv for the sitting room and our bedroom ( which is barely ever on) around 2 year ago. Nothing was wrong with the previous ones. I am in agreement with Star that I would probably expect a tv to last 10 years if I think about it. These will be getting kept until they are DEAD.

I don’t expect that to continue, but a lot has changed in the last few years in terms of quality (4K as standard), HDMI as the standard connection for almost everything, streaming services, etc.
 
Our telly's two and a half years old. The previous one, a Sony, lasted well over ten years but was on the blink when the spawn bought us a Samsung smart one for Christmas. I expect a TV to last about five years now, they're made to have a finite lifespan as is all other electrical equipment. My previous washing machine was about twenty years old and, because spares weren't available any more, D&G gave us a new one and it was the same engineer who installed it who always repaired the old one. He said we'd probably get five to ten years out of it because it's all electronic now so they fail easily and some are even programmed to fail. The one we have now is supposed to be a lot more eco-friendly but the old one had hot and cold feeds so a 40 degree wash took about forty minutes and a 60 degree wash took about an hour. This one is an hour and a half for a forty wash and almost three hours for a sixty, I dread to think how long a 90 with prewash would take. In my opinion doubling the time that the machine is running and using electricity is not more eco-friendly in any way, shape or form.
 
does anyone else absolutely hate watching stuff in hd on a flat screen? most of them do something to the picture that makes it look like a very cheap documentary, i.e. shit. it drives me crazy when we watch movies at friends' and everything looks like an episode of keeping up appearances.

I don't get it either, it makes no sense to me. A 40º wash takes 1 hour and 22 minutes with my washing machine, an eternity. How does it make it more eco friendly?
 
We have a TV in our bedroom, which I think we watched once, when we were going to be late watching the General Election or something.

i try to wash most stuff on a cold daily program that takes about 30 minutes and doesn't wear the clothes or fuck up their colours. jeans, sheets, towels are the only things i really wash hot and, yes, it takes ages (almost 3 hours) for a 60 degree wash (90 was 3 and a half) which i think is absolutely ridiculous.

And I thought 2 hours for 90º wash in my washing machine was insane! I never used it, and hot wash only for white clothes like towels or sheets.

I add 3 different products in every wash, 4 when it's white clothes.
 
Do you have a dryer? Totally useless here but I guess in some countries (or regions here too) is very needed.
 
I bought a tv about 15 years ago, it was one of the fisrt plasmas, it cost a fortune. I hadnt bought one since but mainly because i have lived in different countries in rented houses that were furnished.

I just bought a fairly snazzy 4k tv for relative peanuts and I can see why people would buy a new one every few years because its fucking dirt cheap, despite the fact it must have consumed so many resources from so many places. Fuck this world. :(

My TV is normal, it’s provides by the company that managed the apartment. Sorry to disappoint.

But we have electric toilets here, they have bidet sprays, heated seats, some flush themselves. The one in my apartment is normal though. Except there’s a shallow sink in the lid of the cistern, so when you flush, you can use the fresh water to wash your hands, and that water goes into the cistern for the next flush.

Also my robot can give me a handjob

We only got a drier once we had baby Kylie, it is a total godsend for the winter months!
 
I bought my TV just over 2 years ago. The old one didn't seem to want to play the apps anymore and was a lot smaller.

To the contrary to what Ellie said, I think TV technology seems to be moving quickly. But maybe that's just a marketing thing.
