It's a chip barm here, a chip butty is chips on sliced bread. I'd be dunked in the fryer if I asked for a chip roll!

I remember when I was staying in Manchester and one of the rare times I went to a bakers I asked for a ham salad roll and the lady that worked there never had a clue what I was talking about then after about a minute trying to explain what I was after she said “OH, HAM BARM?”. It sounded like bam which is a totally different kettle of fish here and I got my back up as usual. It wasn’t until a good while later I realised that is just the lingo there.

Here barm is used to describe any soft bread roll (especially oven bottom muffins, flourcakes, baps and also true barmcakes). Any crusty bread roll is referred to as a cob.

The one that scuppered me was my scottish friend's mum who asked if I wanted a piece one time I was at their house. When I asked "a piece of what?" I discovered what a jam piece was.
