Edit: That was a bit 'arsh, Kent isn't too bad in relation to a lot of the UK. For commuting it's great and plenty of seaside options but still close to London. Also we probably have the nicest weather without any of the extreme levels of cold and rain.

I think after years here however I'm itching to move somewhere far away and exotic, like Sussex.

Lot of crime in Didsbury, we very nearly moved there, but the crime was an issue. Chorlton is OK, but because it was very much ‘up and coming’ its now quite expensive. If you want to pick somewhere nice in Greater Manchester you want Altrincham.
 
I lived in Didsbury for a few years and never had any issues with crime, although I did have to ask my housemate to stop adding me into local fb groups because the CURTAIN TWITCHING culture was real.

The other beef we had with the area was one letting agent dominating the market and charging a months rent admin fee to move in, meaning for a £1300 house we had to muster up almost £5k just to move in. When I challenged them on what they did for that fee they said they'd call me back and never did, so we moved somewhere else.

Shame as the house we found was on a nice street that used to close off and host its own little street party every summer.

Yep Doncaster is particularly FOUL.

Theres a couple of places I've lived in Newcastle/wider north east that are genuinely stuck in time and possibly INBRED. Places like Stanley, my goodness
 
Coming from Yorkshire I have a soft spot for some places like Barnsley and Huddersfield, which although complete pits have some level of charm.

The two most hopeless places I’ve visited in the uk are probably Bowling in Scotland, and Barrow in Furness.

I've never been to Barrow In Furness, but I know someone who comes from there, who moved to Morecambe and described it as a massive improvement.

I HAVE been to Morecambe, and any town which is even slightly worse than that is beyond my comprehension.

I lived in Huddersfield for a year, I actually thought it was quite a nice town.
 
I used to work in Hudds and like Bradford, Halifax etc there's some lovely parts and some wonderful old buildings but no one seemed bothered about preserving the cultural makeup of these places. So next to stunning sandstone period architecture you've got grim 70s concrete and not in an artistically juxtapose way.
 
I've been offered an interview in Hemel Hempstead which I said I wasn't sure about because it's a bit out of the way from London although the school looks nice. The recruiter insists that the town itself is very nice and well connected but I'm not sure I trust her.
 
It was about a thousand years ago but I used to live there as well. In fact I had a visit down memory lane and went there last year. Really enjoyed the Twin Peaks boxset I got from Oxfam which didn’t play properly :disco:

For some reason there appear to be hardly any buses which go from the town centre to the station which is very useful :)

If you want to work in London, don’t work in Hemel Hempstead!

Remember that she’s just trying to get positions filled, she will say anything. I have never dealt with a recruiter who I would say I trusted.

Generally though, if you want to live in London I wouldn't rule out working slightly outside - so long as a) the workplace is near a station and b) you can live close to an appropriate station at the London end. It's nice to be going the opposite way to all the other commuters!

When I worked in Welwyn/Hatfield there were quite a few people who lived in Crouch End and got the train up from Hornsey station.

NEITHER ABBEY WOOD NOR THAMESMEAD in other words @Chlammy. Also, avoid the darker side of the East like Canning Town or oh dear Lord have mercy CYPRUS

I think anywhere North (or North East) is always fine although I’m sure there are multiple exceptions which I’ve conveniently forgotten about. I’m quite a fan of Wood Green for some reason but then I don’t have to live there. Also I like places in the West like Hammersmith but @Kate will be more au fait with those
