Got my test results back confirming I have had it and whilst I know I should be grateful that my symptoms were mild, it’s been over three weeks since I lost my sense of taste and smell and it’s barely coming back.

I’m super anxious that it might be long lasting .. eating food and tasting nothing but texture is seriously fucking depressing. :gross:

Especially when experts in the field are saying this;

While it is unclear what the prognosis will be for COVID-19-positive patients with those symptoms, Professor Carney said it was "highly likely" some people would experience permanent problems with their olfactory systems.

"I may see 25 patients a year who have got loss of smell from a common cold or another respiratory virus," he said. "I unfortunately think that's going to go up quite significantly with patients with smell loss after COVID-19.

"We don't know enough about long-term loss of smell and COVID-19 patients, but certainly a lot of us are worried there will be long-term [implications] as a result of patients having these infections.

The thing that's most distressing me about this virus is that the incubation period is so fucking long. I mean honestly, up to 14 days.

Even if I leave the house once in that time I can't ever be sure I don't have it, and I'm always worried about my family for the same reason. If it were 2 days or something I could exhale but as it stands I haven't in SOME TIME now.

At least it's some relief that the average is 5 days.

Sigh.

70 more deaths in Scotland. That leads me to think that it’s going to be a big UK number again today. Unless Scotland were behind England in terms of initial transmission which is highly possible.

Update on my hotel bookings. They're still not budging.

Hi

I have a booking at Easy Hotel Rotterdam City Centre from 2-18 May. Booking reference xxxxxxxx.

The purpose of this trip was to attend the Eurovision Song Contest, which was sadly confirmed today to have been cancelled due to Coronavirus.

The booking is non-refundable, but in light of the extraordinary circumstances I was hoping you would be able to offer a refund? I obviously made the booking in good faith and the circumstances preventing me from attending are entirely beyond my control.

You may move your date for the next year when the Eurovision will be held. Please be aware that an extra charge may apply, should the room rate be higher during the requested period of time. We do not charge our standard change fee on this occasion.

Should you wish to modify your dates, please provide us the new dates.
If you have not yet decided what date you intend to travel again, we can cancel your booking on our end for now and reinstate your booking once you contact us directly for a modified date. Your prepayment will be on hold as credit.

Thank you for your response.

Under the circumstances, I would be much more comfortable with a refund at this time. It seems likely that due to the ongoing travel restrictions, it would actually be impossible for me to attend my original booking even without taking into account the Eurovision cancellation. I believe this gives me legal grounds for a full refund.

Please advise on how I can escalate this if necessary.

It's been a while since you posted so I can't remember, but did you use booking.com?

They're offering free refunds on even non-refundable stuff for me.

I did but I can't see anything about that. Where on the site do I go for that?
 
Maybe give them a call. I actually found them extremely helpful with regards to my hotel booking, especially given the sheer number of calls they must be getting. (it was refundable but the hotel was dragging its feet on giving me the money back)
 
Might have just been the one place that was being nice, to be honest. The rest of my bookings are refundable anyway. yay.
 
You might be super unlucky booking an EasyHotel tbh - EasyJet are being COMPLETE DICKS about refunding flights at the moment.

Deffo go through booking.com instead of direct

As the company have offered you an alternative you can only do a chargeback if they are breaching their terms and conditions so you’ll need to scour those. Non refundable is harder and usually requires goodwill from the company as technically unless the hotel is closed you can still stay there which is what you paid them for.

Maybe it's because they're all temporarily socialists that they are in "Government-knows-best" mode.

Hate to say it VoR but I think you stating that you were attending for Eurovision might have fucked you a little bit here, since a date change may not have been as relevant a solution for them to suggest.

I still think you should have a case but ultimately this will come down to the T&Cs under which you made the booking.

Probably worth looking into a bit more, to be fair. I suppose the only issue is that while you may be entitled to one here, the law might be entirely different over there.

Most companies are offering alternative dates or vouchers. Non refundable don’t have to but some are due to goodwill. I’ve been brought off my role to help with the backlogue of disputes being processed where I work. So he’s basically relying on goodwill or finding a breach of the terms and conditions or that the hotel is closed in May. Some conditional refunds are being made but will simply redebit if the company proves they haven’t breached anything.
 
You need to do some research, but my strong suspicion is that your legal position will change, if *and when* the Government of the Netherlands confirms that hotels will remain closed in May.
(I assume they are closed at the moment)

At that point (but not right now), they can no longer give you the service they promised and EU-wide consumer rights kick in.

(The problem with this strategy is that, if for some reason hotels are open in May, you may have lost your opportunity to take them up on their offer of rebooking.)

I would imagine hotels have to stay open, they offer a basic need (shelter) for people who absolutely have to travel. There are also people living full-time in hotels, people who may be stranded in another country right now etc.
 
I was out in town yesterday (I had my prep appointment) and there was no sign of social distancing at all. The beautiful weather isn’t helping either.

The government will now be able to pass new laws without taking it to Parliament first (only after) and this will come in effect next week I think... so who knows.

At the same time, they’re saying that we have a flatter curve so I still think we’re doing the right thing.
 
Meanwhile in rest of Europe; it looks like Denmark, Norway and Austria will ease their lockdowns next week, which will probably mean that as soon as everyone is out again, they’ll get infected all at once.

yes, kindergardens and schools (1st-5th grade) open Wednesday if they have certain arrangements in place. it'll be interesting for sure...
