Bitter Tuesday writes hateful tags

And before you quit. This isn't a magical new problem. So you should know all about it, and being in the firing line from all sides isn't so fun. So maybe be less of a dick about it.

This.

There's a strain of tags aimed at punching down, which we saw even in political threads just because somebody dared to have a different opinion and write an essay about why. That's the stuff we should be concerned with.

Tags are no different to posts, especially now we CAN hold people accountable. For the most part everyone plays nicely, from time to time it gets out of hand.

If someone is upset about a tag/taggers then they can come to us, we can activate the module that shows whos posted them and act accordingly.

If people think this isn't a fair middle ground then can I suggest they come with a better solution?

This is harder than policing Ron Jr and his mates. I know were all a bit pent up with life at the minute but (with the exception of Soldi) you're all grown adults.

The solution's already been suggested. Either we leave Tag Essentials on permanently, just use it on request, or carry on without it.

All the rest of us want is the chance to vote on it. If we're all grown adults, what could go wrong?

And that's really fucking insulting. Just because our opinion is different to yours.

I think the solution is to have tags public if possible? This way no one has to come back to you and people can fight publicly.

It totally removes any issue.

Also, in case it was missed, my earlier question- can we delete existing tags and just have them public from here on? Because that would solve ALL the problems.

I came to power by a coup and I'll be damned if I'm handing over power to the plebeians that easy.

Its got nothing to do with my opinion and everything to do with the way people are behaving.

Name names. Without saying who you think is being childish, you're really only doing the same thing.

I'll accept I've been a bit more direct/humourless than usual but only because these situations keep happening.

I believe so.

That feels like a rich history down the drain, though.

I think people are being reasonable, there seems to be a consensus that we would like tags to be made public if possible. No one is saying you have to do it right this second but a vote seems reasonable to get a better picture.

I agree with you, there are old tags that would be a shame to lose.

If the staff are worried about posters dredging offensive tags up from years ago, maybe make a statute of limitations based on how old the thread is.

I'm sure there are threads from 2004 that would be looked at differently now, but it's a non-issue because nobody really reads them.

I don’t mind tags but I mostly don’t notice them, I will take posts over tags if we have to lose one.

Let's drop the "staff" bit, i'm just a poster like anyone else stating my preferences. I've already said that it's up to everyone, not me.

Anyway, I've had a look deleting old tags may not be possible, unless I individually remove all 103,273 of them. Or do something fancy on the Plesk database, but i'd have to read into that.

Who? People are upset at the situation. No one has been out of line from what I see.

Don't you attempt to pedantry me, young man. He's a freelancer photographer who sells work to a paper. That's not full time.
He’s been a full time research assistant at times as well. He’s also an occasional father and husband. I forget what the original point of this was, but basically if he can stick on some tights and kick Fuck out of an octopus, there’s no reason you can’t.

Fair enough, I'll wait for the vote then.

You can’t have “oh we can’t lose history” and “no one can be judged on tags 10 years ago”- that’s a total contradiction :D

OH JUST OPEN THEM UP! We’ll have a bit of a WHINE for a while, people will get over it and Moopy becomes a place for 2020 and not a cunty little shithole full of snivelling bastards and sycophants.

Quit with the hyperbole, it's not a total contradiction. There are thousands of good, funny tags been made over 10 years which don't need to be scrubbed from existence.

And yes, some less good tags made a long time ago. I never said nobody can be judged on them, I said I don't get the point of dragging up a witch hunt on actions made when we were all a bit more feral.

But I repeat my earlier comment- witch hunt vs allowing this to continue. And it will. And do you really want to get into a situation where you are asked to reveal tags all day long?

But you opened it already, not that long ago (around MoopyFate, I think), I remember taking a look at who was behind some psychotic tags. Nothing happened then!

God I remember many, many moons ago when I was a mod people getting upset and wanting to know who wrote what. Anyone who’s written a tag knew that mods could see and reveal if they wanted to. Make it free for everyone to see, mods don‘t get dragged into it all and can focus on more important stuff.

Actually that's a VERY good point.

We are discussing this at the minute, but no one seems to really be suggesting anything against the current status quo.

My formal suggestions are as follows :david:

1. Open up a forum-wide poll on using the tag plug-in with the option to: A - Turn on the plug-in permanently, B - Turn on the plug-in, but only when someone complains to an admin/mod, C - Keep the status quo

2. If we decide for Option A or Option B, implement a statute of limitations to stop people complaining about tags that were posted years ago, based on the date of the most recent post in the thread. Maybe 1yr ago max.

3. Enforce the old rule about no personal abuse in tags - delete them, warn posters, or whatever

I don't agree with "delete them". That just leaves it entirely open to people still being cunts without any chance of reprimand or the target being able to respond.

Hi everyone.

I didn't want to make a thread or post openly because god knows it would only give ammunition to the people who were going on and on about attention seeking and ego feeding. I saw this topic though and thought I'd pop in just to clarify.

What I will say is that over the last few weeks I have started a lot of threads which might have annoyed people, but like everyone I'm in lockdown and thought it would lead to some fun conversations. That's it.

The tags that were there yesterday aren't visible anymore. I wasn't annoyed at all about the other ones that Kata and SC mentioned which weren't offensive.

However, it's hard for my personality to take the insults that were being posted by (mostly one) poster and being put into tag form. I'm not confrontational and I do have self esteem issues so maybe it hits me more than others. Butter Tart was lovely in the PMs and I'm sure he and all the admins do their best.

A while back I took a big break from Moopy because a) the insults had started again, and b) someone took the time to go onto my personal Facebook (I had to block him on there consequently), find a photo of me and plaster it all over the site. I've been mostly sporadic in my posts since then but obviously Lockdown is here and this has been a great place for the likes of the running group, the reading thread, the Eurovision stuff, Kala's competition etc.

However, the other stuff outweighs that for me, particularly as the brunt of it seems to be coming from the same person as before. Again, it's my nature to take things more personally than I should - me writing paragraphs explaining this on an online forum is demonstrative of that. So I think a break is needed for my mental health. I would consider asking an admin to delete my account so the temptation to log in and join back isn't there but I know that isn't something done in here for the most part.

Sorry if this comes off as attention seeking. I just wanted to be clear. And I do appreciate it that this is a much bigger topic than me leaving. As ButterTart said, the Kindacool bullying is vile and the fact that it has gone on for a years makes it worse. I would have left ages ago if I was in his position.

(Also, I'm well up for the running tomorrow if you guys are using the Strava group!).
