Oh and also I wasn't criticising people for wanting to get away at all (hell, I was considering it myself) - it was absolutely aimed at the government for the absolute stunt that is the quarantine and how stacked the handling of it seems to be towards the political and economic rather than health.

That and as @SDF said, how all the talk of international travel and holidays squares up so little with all of the other rules.

I don't mean to be cynical but...

The 'One meter plus' rule puts the onus on people to interpret and make judgements, rather than provide clear guidance. If you are a shit pub owner (Tim Wetherspoon Martin) you could easily choose to claim that it is impossible to have 2m, so instead go with 1m to pack more people in and make more money. Then when people get sick, the government can wash their hands of the problem and pass the blame onto others.

I mean, my 30th birthday was the week before lockdown and I still cancelled everything. I would have felt responsible if any of my family or friends had become infected with the virus whilst celebrating my birthday. I understand that people are excited about things opening up, but I find it hard to be excited about the idea of doing normal things because of the looming threat of illness that exists in the background. Going on holiday feels like a fucking waste of money if i’m going to spend the whole time anxious.

Regarding the economy also being a silent killer, YES, but as @ZenGiraffe has said, a lot of that was to do with the decisions the Tories made in managing that crisis and I don’t think we’d have seen as many deaths if we had continued with Labour’s approach from 2008-09.

I think our halfway house approach to managing this crisis means we are going to experience the worst of both worlds. We locked down so our economy took a massive hit, and now we’re rushing back and are going to see huge consequences in terms of deaths and demand on the NHS. Government’s who have dealt with this well have chosen one or the other. It’s also going to drag things out FAR LONGER than they otherwise would have been because of the inevitable second spike may be so bad that it necessitates a second lockdown.
 
Who is off to the pub next weekend then? I am assuming @Indie will be sloshed whilst sampling the fine ales that York establishments have to offer next weekend.

And look who's in charge now, it's not 2009 Labour. Boris et al are making lovely noises about not going back to austerity, but you really trust them not to fuck over the poor in some way in order to 'maintain financial prudence' or however they decide to phrase it?

We're not going to avoid economic catastrophe either way, it's how you manage the level at which you get to and whether you can keep more things on life support.

I agree that the approach to lockdown has left us with a terrible dilemma and it puts us in a worse position than a lot of other countries, but we are where we are, so we can only consider the correct action as of today. Maybe it is a little too quick, maybe a little too soon. Maybe we will get a second spike and have to go on lockdown again - but even if we have 4 months lockdown and 3 months in the winter, that may be preferable to many businesses than 5 months in one go simply so they can get some cashflow going in the meantime.

I suspect any secondary lockdowns will be regional anyway a lá Germany today - we're a little better at identifying now (yes, not fantastically so, but y'know)

I am not in support of any measures the government has made to date but there has to be a point at which we accept an ongoing but lower risk. Coronavirus cases aren't going to reach zero in this country ESPECIALLY given the population has lost patience with it anyway.
 
They said no to bowling alleys, but my local Hollywood Bowl already announced a reopening and all of their measures that will be in place. I’ve booked a session just for something different.

Also strangely no to nail salons, which I think is weird since staff there all wear masks, disinfect their equipment and demand hand washing anyway even before lockdown.

That is what I mean... what i’m saying is that getting the economy moving now isn’t necessarily going to affect whether or not Boris and Co. opt for austerity again and how hard they go for it either.
 
Of course now I feel like a virgin again and don’t wanna break the fast for just ANYONE. So it’ll still probs be another 2 months till I get round to getting ploughed.
 
While it's good news, I actually get a sense of anxiety thinking how busy they're going to be and how any social distancing just won't happen.

Even in Tesco yesterday there's a real sense of people having given up trying to keep a sensible distance away from each other.

I'd love to go for a nice meal or have some drinks in a beer garden as long as I'm going to have space and feel safe and I just don't think that'll happen right away. I might wait a few weeks to see how people find the pubs/restaurants before rushing out.

I've got a bit used to staying in being "the new normal" and am enjoying it tbh.

I would have thought it would just be on a first come first serve basis. People are not going to queue to get in to a pub when they are at capacity though, surely so WHO KNOWS?

It sounds like the indoors are opening as well? The announcement, is, as has become standard, incredibly confusing.
 
Booking systems have been CONFIRMED? I thought @Kate was only speculating. I should really read up on this stuff before I comment. :bruised:

I'm not in any real RUSH to go in a pub right now tbh, not until all measures are scrapped, the experience isn't exactly going to be same with table service and everyone sat 1m apart.
 
Meanwhile some open air place in North Greenwich who are charging £30 just to GET IN :manson::manson::manson::manson: are now desperately sending emails saying MORE SLOTS RELEASED!!1111!!! in case anyone hasn't noticed today's news yet.
 
Not that I have to worry about any of this for another good few weeks. I am pretty happy drinking in the garden and having friends around at a distance. I would really LOVE if I could get over to Ireland to see my family though. :(
 
I really couldn't give a fuck about pubs opening at the moment. Of course it's great but just going by the MASSIVE queues for Primark, Ikea and McDonalds opening, I cannot be FUCKED dealing with massive queues and TONS of people. I am not really THAT desperate for a drink.

Anyway, I think Scotland will be a fortnight behind England anyway, so it will likely be around 17 July when stuff opens which is a BANK HOLIDAY weekend in Glasgow and it's always fucking PACKED in bars anyway, so it will be even worse! FUCK THAT.
 
Pubs will be encouraged to collect customers' details so that they can be contacted if someone tests positive. We need more info on this - firstly what will they do with our data, and secondly if we are told to self-isolate because someone has tested positive, will that be enforced somehow?

Looking at how cautious Nicola has been up to now I would say that if that is the case she will hold off until after the bank holiday.

Is it not a similar situation to before lockdown when the government said pubs could remain open but advised people to stay away from them? Pubs are not making great profits in today’s climate anyway, never mind opening them at less than full capacity. It really doesn’t look very hopeful for them. :(
