Space Brothers – Shine. 42 POINTS

There will be questions in your mind

1997, UK, No. 23 smash! Ending up ten places higher than in their Ascension guise, this is the highest placing song for the Space Brothers and their Quantum Leap box set of different identities. @dmlaw wheels out his daughter Joanna a final time to bash out the vocals here. Space brothers moniker has been largely dormant for a long while, their other guises being more prominent. Ricky Simmonds and Stephen Jones have largely retired the Space Brothers moniker now, but luckily they’ve another six hundred to fall back on.

I fully expected this to perform well, and I’ve not been disappointed. The tempering of the trance element with a hearty dose of Europop means it’s that bit more accessible that some of the other trance efforts in the running. Genuinely great.

Here’s that beach festival from the Ascension write up again. No sign of Nicola Sturgeon, but its nice to see Sheila Hancock living it up right in the middle there.

 
I believe it was a compilation called Euphoria where I first heard it, and also my first dalliance was obsessed with it. It just builds and builds.

Brainbug – Nightmare. 42 POINTS

1996, Italy, No. 11 smash! In its original form, a fairly unremarkable trance number, it’s the ‘Sinister Strings’ mix that made it famous and is considered the definitive version. Creepy and just a touch camp, it’s been used in films as diverse as Human Traffic, A Night at the Roxbury and Freddy Vs Jason. Brainbug died during a concert in 2016, no word yet as to whether it was an actual brain bug that did him in.

Hugely unexpected placing for this, but it was buoyed by a few big scores. To me, this is an out-and-out classic. I first heard it when I used to watch Human Traffic on a nightly basis as a teenager, and it’s always been a staple of every dance playlist I make. I was worried it would be too niche to perform here, and I’m pleased to report I was wrong.

1999, UK, No. 6 smash! Well, it turns out dmlaw’s Double Entry isn’t just the name of a film I directed, it’s also what’s happened here! Poor Chicane (AKA Nick Bracegirdle, so you can see why the pseudonym was requirede) came to the top 100 with two contenders in his back pocket and, rightly or wrongly (wrongly), neither of them made the top 50. Moya Brennan off Clannad provided the vocals, using elements of Clannad’s own song ‘Theme From Harry’s Game’. It also samples Lucid’s ‘Can’t Help Myself’, and was rereleased a few years later as ‘Bruised Water’, a mashup with Natasha Bedingfield’s ‘I Bruise Easily’. Natasha, you may recall, was actually a stage school that magically gained sentience and decided to take over the world of pop as precociously as possible.

TOO FUCKING LOW. Seriously, I’ve got the names of every person who didn’t give this points, and @Indie can quite easily supply me with contact details and improvised explosives. Just majestic, but sadly not quite shouty woman in trouser suit enough for Moopy.

Here’s a singer called Not!Moya (May not be her name) performing a creditable karaoke version of it at a Chicane live event.

1997, Germany, No. 2 smash! Well, it turns out dmlaw Over-60 Triple Insertion isn’t just the name of a film I had a confusing wank to, it’s also what’s happened here! Sash! loses only the second of his FIVE contenders here. I say HIS, but my private dick @Ag Christie uncovered a conspiracy that goes right to the very top – Sash! is actually THREE people. Sascha Lappessen is the front-man who appears in the videos, while Ralf Kappmeier Thomas Lüdke are the backstage goblins who, it would seem, somehow have even less charisma than Sascha. Anyway, the video for this was shot in Lanzarote and Tenerife, and the keener minds among you may already have spotted that neither of those places are in Ecuador.

One of my favourite Sash! efforts – I don’t think I could ever trust someone who doesn’t at least attempt to shout the opening lines. For the record, I think we picked the correct Sash! songs for this list. I’d have added Just Around the Hill, but I wouldn’t have swapped it for any of the ones we already have.

was actually released at the tail end of 1990 but flopped. Well maybe it was just released quietly on an indie label. The top ten placement in 91 was a re-release because of the enormous reaction in the clubs

Saffron obviously doesn’t sing on the original track as it’s a sample mash up but she does a good version of it live.
 
I love Flawless, came out the summer of 2001 which, alone with late 1990/1991 is the pinnacle era of dance music IMO. I also love the George Michael version. He could so easily have ruined it, and deserves credit for not doing so.
 
Space Brothers were part of that peak in Trance in the late 90s - Chicane, Nalin & Kane, Agnelli & Nelson, Lucid, the list goes on.

my favourite Space Brothers track is Legacy (Show Me Love). It just has the most spectacular euphoric breakdown.

The best trance tracks such as Shine are the ones that can make you feel incredibly happy and incredibly sad at exactly the same time, even on a dance floor.

2009, UK, No. 13 smash! Sophie Ellis-Bextor, with her face the colour and shape of a cistern lid, has carved out quite the niche for herself as a high-end featured vocalist. Much like Karen Parry, every track she lends her dainty voice to carries an aura of quality. Her accomplices here are the Freemasons, who released nearly seven hundred singles a week between 2005 and 2009. Freemason Russell Small, you may be nonplussed to discover, is one half of Phats & Small. Sophie used to be in Indie band Theaudience, until she discovered that the gays are a far less discerning crowd to please than student wankers with designer moustaches.

Another cracking rediscovery for me, this. I quite enjoyed it first time round, I think it’s MINT now. I’m not sure how much of that is deflected goodwill from the genuinely sensational Not Giving Up on Love, but I think this more than stands on its own giant, spindly legs.

Here’s Sophie at a suspiciously huge venue. I don’t know who she’s warming up for, but I bet they’re well famous.

2001, Netherlands/Australia, No. 3 smash! And so the journey of the Minogue brothers ends here, at a very respectable 59th place. Here, Donny teams up with Dutch DJs Zki & Dobre, also known as Chocolate Puma (I remember this being a closely guarded secret when it was released, for some reason). Originally released as an instrumental called ‘Stringer’, it was Dana’s delicate vocal stylings that made it a smash. Such was the international appeal of it, they even recorded a version in French called ‘Est-ce Que to M’Aimes Encore.’

I nominated this, so it’s obviously exemplary. Another Leeds/Huddersfield anthem from the arse end of 2001, I remember many a freezing Winter’s night out (I refused to wear a jacket because then nobody would be able to see my FCUK t-shirt) with this on heavy rotation. Ah, nostalgia. Like being kicked directly through your ribs and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Here’s Dahny sporting some unfortunate headwear that makes it look a bit like she’s bagged herself a walk-on part in House of Elliot.

1999, Germany, No 15 smash! Thanks to ATB, I’m legally obliged to point out that this group’s actual name is ‘A Touch of Class’ (Maybe we should rename him ‘A Total Bellend’ for making us learn different shit than we’ve already gotten used to). This is a cover of a Russian song called ‘Pesenka’ by Ruki Vverh, which was news to me. ATC would themselves have a very great honour bestowed upon them when Mel C screeched her way through a cover of this in 2018 (‘Alexa, play me the sound of a rape alarm watching its children burn to death in a house fire’). All four members of the group were from different countries, namely: Australia; New Zealand; Italy; and the UK.

Classic Eurodance, this, the sort of rare breed of song that defines an entire genre. I honestly don’t know how someone could say they dislike this and still sleep soundly of a night.

Here they are performing somewhere in Germany. It looks fucking mint wherever it is. The two women in the group really were quite fit, not that it was of any consequence to the two lads.
