My mother is the absolute opposite. Throwing things away left, right and centre. It's like she's determined to wipe any trace that she ever existed out.

Trust me, it will make life SO MUCH EASIER.

My Mum has suddenly decided to spunk money up the wall. Last week she offered to buy me the £2000-odd set of copper induction pans I'd found. I think it's part of the clingy thing again- treat me good and I won't go away. It's horribly sad.

(Note: I did refuse...!)
 
My dad once bought 6 broken (!) water jets with the thought that he could restore them and sell for a profit. It costs more to fix one of those things than to buy a new one, so they’re just sitting in the garage. My grandad was the same - he died in 1985 and we only recently managed to get rid of a rusty iron weather vane sitting in the cellar that he nabbed from the local church.
 
I will say though Shee, that the first Christmas after my Dad died was so hard for mum, and he died a fair bit earlier in the year. She insisted that she wanted nothing to be different the first year, as much as we offered her many alternatives. So that meant us all going up to her. She managed pretty well, it seemed. But we were the last to leave, and before I left the block of flats, I had an urge somehow that I had to go back. I found her slumped in the hallway, sobbing uncontrollably. Worse than I ever saw her at the hospital when dad died, or at the funeral. I know you're being pulled multiple ways, but my inclination would be to prioritise her.

My Dad ebayed stuff. He was damned good at it but he used to do things like buy sets of postcards at auction and then sell them individually for £2 each. Took him forever, but he made some decent money out of them and kept him busy, which was the point. Same with coins.

Thing is, we're finding them EVERYWHERE. Must be 5000 postcards in the house and every box we find has more fucking coins in it.

Oh I didn't make it clear- she absolutely is my priority and I won't be leaving her unless she's safely tucked away with my brother (who she loves and who is brilliant with her...it's not like I'm abandoning her for someone she hates). I can't think I won't be with her for Christmas, though.

He might have been able to take my dad’s set of magazines about 1970s Arizona highways :D

Oh I know, but it's the fact that she's openly saying that which is making me uneasy. I've asked her flat out 'is there something you're not telling me?' a few times but she insists not.

I think part of it is knowing that Mr L had a lot of work sorting out his mum's house. I think all my mum's possessions would pretty much fit in about two rooms now.

Oh I'll raise you the complete set of Roy of the Rovers comics? Random collection of programmes from non-league football? WEIRD PILE OF PEOPLE'S FRIEND FROM THE LATE 80S?

It's so strange how they see things differently. It must be weird coming up to what you know is the end of your life and making the relevant decisions and choices.
 
My mum is in a block of warden controlled flats. The same scheme my dad was warden of when he died. Initially she was going to move back to the family home, which they were renting out while they lived there, but ultimately she decided to sell that and stay in the block. I'm so pleased she did - it's far less of a worry than it would be otherwise. She's still massively independent so only has a call once a day, but knowing that it's there is a weight lifted. And she has a social life (well, not under restrictions currently) on hand.

Yeah - I guess she's seen both her parents die, her husband die, one of her two siblings die, several friends die... how can you not have a different perspective?

Well, indeed. Mine is similar I guess. Most of her friends have died, albeit that she is really popular and has lots of younger people coming in to visit her (not YOUNG people, but neighbours and friends from round the Co-Op where she used to work etc.) so loneliness is not GENERALLY a problem for her, thankfully, though right now it really is.

I do think she's just given up, though. She just sits in her chair all day watching tv and waiting for me to come round at the moment.
 
Well I tested positive for COVID. I'm not that surprised, since I work around people who can't wear masks, and we've had a number of outbreaks at work. Its not ideal, but my main concern is that I haven't spread it to anyone else

London in Tier 2, although can’t say I’m in a RUSH to go back to the pub, and technically I can’t go with anyone ANYWAY.
 
What is going on with Manchester? They’ve had the strictest lockdown measures for months now and nothing seems to be bringing cases down?

To be honest tier 2 or 3 doesn't make a whole lot of difference to me anyway.
 
Apparently Cornwall, Cumbria and East Anglia are the only places in Tier 1, can imagine a lot of tension between locals and holiday home owners over Christmas.
 
Wahey, I'm in Cumbria, assuming that applies to all of us. But I definitely think we'll end up paying a HEAVY price if every superspreader and his dog is going to flock here. It also doesn't bode well that the ZOE study's estimates for this area have been going up and up...
