Someone I know works in our local hospital. We are absolutely screwed. Our one hospital can't cope with what's happening at the moment and it's the first time since this started that I'm genuinely frightened of catching this, or a loved one catching it, and there being no one to help because our hospital is drowning in cases :(

Which only begs the question, why has it taken you (and many, many others) this long to realise that?

I realised ages ago how serious it was but our cases were so low that the hospital coped. But our cases have soared recently. As have everyone's.

Plus I've not been going out breaking rules. I've been to work and followed all tier rules.

But then when you're told your tier one and the rest of the country is fucked, it's not really surprising that people get the impression that ANYTHING GOES, is it?

I think islanders have been quite naive to be honest. Our cases have been minimal. Even during the summer with thousands of tourists we had barely any cases. The hospital wasn't even vaguely affected.

I don't know if it's the new strain that's making it spread so fast, but suddenly our cases have gone through the roof. And our hospital already struggles.

I feel relatively safe at work but Mandy's work is shocking. All of them in an office and factory with no ppe.

In my office there are restrictions on the number of people in rooms, but no PPE. I think people are quite good at the number of people in a room in terms of sitting down and working, but when it's 'oh I just need to get to my locker for a couple of minutes' or 'I'll just quickly speak with her', it all goes out of the window. And in terms of using the kitchen or bathrooms, people seem to think it doesn't apply.

I feel much safer in surgery.

And this is the trouble - I'm not saying it's your fault at all - but just because the tier you're in says you can meet up with people, doesn't mean you should.

Mixed messages from the government as always have screwed people over.

Like I said, we were naive on the island. I mixed with my group of friends, most of whom I work with anyway. And actually apart from Christmas day, I've not socialised with friends since 12th December. I've been off work this week and not left home since Monday.

However, I do know of people that are STILL having parties despite being in tier 4 :square:

Exactly the same as here. And I did it myself yesterday. I went shopping just because I could. Admittedly it was the first time I went out in three days at all, and the first time since before Christmas to any shop other than a supermarket. But did I need to? Of course not. I did it because I could.

During the first lockdown everyone took it so seriously.

But when you're told "you're tier 1, go to the pub, see your friends"...people do. Rightly or wrongly :(

I definitely took advantage of our tier 1 status but I didn't ever take the piss.

Well you aren't actually TOLD to go to the pub, are you? :D But you can, so you do. That's human nature.

I know if we were still tier two, Mr L would have suggested going to Bath shopping yesterday, and eating out while we were there. And I'd have gone.

Didn't you have a friend you saw on Xmas eve who had now tested positive? How is she doing now?

Genuine question, does the fear of catching covid not put you off? I literally don't go anywhere unless I have to.

She dropped some food off to me at work for 10 minutes. I was meant to go to the pub with her but I cancelled. I was only worried because I wasn't sure if it was transmitted on food.

She seems ok. She's working from home for a bit.

The government has messed it up royally after the first lockdown. And at this point, all that this 'stop/start' strategy of brief lockdowns is doing is actually putting selective pressure on the virus to adapt - hence why we've got a more virulent strain that's running rife. So it's making matters worse.

Most people don't have the fear factor anymore. It was there during the first lockdown but not anymore.
Absolutely this. It was very easy to get complacent and blasé about it. Especially when you're still going to work every day.

I don't think it helped when we came out of first lockdown too quickly and within weeks the government was encouraging (and subsidising) people to 'eat out to help out'. So it's been a gradual process - partly human nature but really I fully blame the government for where we are, and less so the public.

Of course I'm aware of it and am not unconcerned, but no, it doesn't put me off, or else I wouldn't go.

For me it's moreso than ever, seeing the longterm effect it's had on people is what scares me. Back in March no one knew about long covid but now you hear people telling their stories and I don't ever want that.

Agree entirely. And I don't think it's Rachey's fault AT ALL, and apologies if my post suggested such. But it's fucking ridiculous in a world of social media etc. that people in Tier 1 are doing what the fuck they like whilst those in Tier 4 are supposed to just sit and watch. It won't happen.

And, just walked back from the supermarket. Passed two groups of teenage boys all skateboarding together. Loads of couples shopping together and loads of people either not wearing masks or wearing them under the nose including the staff at Sainsbury’s. I don’t know why it surprises me every time, but there’s just no way to enforce this kind of stuff.

I think you're in a relatively small minority. And obviously well behaved people like you aren't being seen (because you're at home), but I was sure when I was out yesterday that I saw less social distancing and more people without masks than I have done previously.

I do agree. And looking back, maybe Mandy and I were stupid to meet up with people. But we felt safe, we felt we were doing what was ok. We were going to work so why shouldn't we see our friends if it was allowed.

It's only when my friend tested positive last week that I actually thought "shit, that could have been me".

I should have taken it more seriously maybe. And I've been very lucky so far. But I'm done now, I'm going to work and that's all.

Oh, we ALL did it! I was going to the pub with friends when it was allowed- totally understand. Admittedly, MUCH MUCH less than I would have done on any normal occasion, but still...

I know you didn't ask me, but my head is still in the same place as the original poll. I do not fear catching the virus in the slightest. If I got it, the likelihood is it would have minimal impact, and I'm not worried about passing it on because I don't go anywhere.

Up until recently the fear of catching it didn't bother me because I was very much of the "I won't get it" opinion. Ridiculous I know.

And then I was of the "if I do, I'll be fine" opinion.

I'm not so sure now. I don't have any health issues that I'm aware of but being overweight is a concern

Fair enough. Perhaps if I didn't have children I might feel different, but I now at this age they rely on me and I can't fathom doing anything that could put me at risk of not being able to look after them, no matter how tiny the risk is.

I mean we are pretty much already in it. But expect a full national lockdown in the next week I'd say.

It is all very grim. The christmas mixing won't have taken its toll just yet either. I know 7 people who have it now! Gonna be a rough January. Stay safe everyone!

Does anyone know where you can report a business that isn't complying with covid rules?

Mandy worked from home for months. Now her boss won't let them. So there's a factory and office all working together in close proximity. No open windows, no screens, just advised to wear a mask if they go to the toilet :square:
