Money Power Glory is such a THOROUGHLY DEPRESSING SONG before she even starts singing.

the chorus is obviously immense and beautiful but it's the more subdued, wrist-slitty verses that really do it for me.

the sun also rises
on those who fail the call
my life, it comprises
of losses and wins and fails and falls

:(

08 Ultraviolence
09.5 Shades of Cool

one point docked for the "dope and diamonds" middle 8 - musically amazing but lyrically turgid.

MONEY POWER GLORY is everything and if I could give a 2nd eleven it would be to this anthem.

It is just so dark. I love it.

The mid section here gets a bit weak for me. She sounds a bit disengaged on "Money Power Glory" and it is a little reductive for her lyrically even at this point.

this run of several songs all about being sad, a capitalist vixen, a whore, super sad, a drag, pretty and tragic is kind of like the first half of the album she was having a ball of her time with her baby in Brooklyn taking all the good drugs, but then she came back to LA and ended up in a fucking hellish SEVEN DAY COMEDOWN.

I'll use "Fucked My Way to the Top" as an opportunity to share my fav Del Rey quote:

"I have slept with a lot of guys in the industry, but none of them helped me get my record deals. Which is annoying,”

SIS :disco:

It's beyond wig at this point. Queen has taken my dura mater.

if
you send for me
you know
I'll come
and if
you call for me
you know
I'll run

:(

christ if this doesn't start out as the absolute saddest, darkest, bleakest song of Lana Del Rey's whole career. it really is just MISERABLE.

sunset, small town. I'm out of time.
will you still love me when I shine
from words, but not from beauty?

it's beautiful. and from the second chorus onwards, when the strings become more pronounced, I feel like it becomes a slightly more hopeful song. yes, she's still desperate for him to call, but she believes that there is an escape for her. she is not totally doomed.

but it's never resolved, and by the end only the faintest glimmer of that hope remains.

AMAZING STUFF!

I would feel extremely sorry for her, if not for the fact that she's always seemed pretty well adjusted, happy enough living her stoner at the beach lifestyle, and playing out her SICKEST MORBID FANTASIES via the form of song. it's probably quite healthy really. :D
