Melodifestivalen 2021: Deltävling Two

My top 7.
1. Sami/WAHL - 90-talet
2. Anton - Youngblood
3. Dotter - Little Tot
4. Ewa/Eva - The Clapping Song
5. Frida - Crying Rivers except not shit

6. Patrik - Generic MF preset #567
7. Lorde - Royals

Any of my top 5 are acceptable qualifiers.

I'm astonished Dotter entered with Cry the first time given how much of a toot A Million Years, Victorious, Bulletproof and Little Tot are. Christer *really* took the wrong lesson from Heroes winning while everyone was saying it was a rip-off, didn't he?

Anton - Sounds pretty strong, and not nearly as derivative as we’d been led to believe; hopefully he can actually sing it

Julia - This will be completely overlooked but in its own right it’s pleasant, nice production

90-talet - This is MUCH more like The Weeknd than Anton! Really great chorus but just echoing what somebody else said about it not really going off...possibly takes itself a tad too seriously for the subject matter

Frida - Yes I’m all for a good modulation at the chorus but this one comes out of nowhere and makes zero musical sense. Sounds like it could at least have more legs than Fingerprints did last week

Eva & Ewa - Oh this will be good fun! Could be straight out of Melodifestivalen 1971 and would be nailed on for the final if it were two old blokes singing it

Patrik - Nice Troye Sivan quality to this but it’s a bit subtle and I can’t see it being a vote magnet. Good.

Dotter - Statements?? This is the most straight down the middle pop song we’ve had so far! So much so I’d almost criticise it for being generic, but I can tell it’s quite strong and I’m sure everything will be thrown at the performance

I don't get what the journalists are saying about this being a weak heat, I believe they just go with how big the names are. I think the studio versions are properly strong this week, no one is bad. My Top 6:

=6 . Frida Green "The Silence"
Good, but feel like I've heard it too many times before. I'm mostly scared she will just stand in a spotlight with a guitar :(

=6. Patrik Jean "Tears Run Dry"
Great for Spotify/Radio but too anonymous. I don't need it in Melodifestivalen.

5. Anton Ewald "New Religion"
Fun, should be a really good dance interval act for the finals.

4. Eva Rydberg & Ewa Roos "Rena rama ding dong"
This is so much Donald Disney Duck, I'm sure Rydberg will deliver! Journalists thinking this not competitive is so so wrong, it's just needs a ticklingly good show.

3. Julia Alfrida "Rich"
Cool, really hope for a dark mystical performance on Sat! I'm weak for Lorde knock-offs and this is a good one. Love her lesbain rhythmic moaning, she's much better at lesbian moans than

2. WAHL feat. SAMI "90-talet"
A bit colder and coooler than I'd imagined. This is nabbed straight from Swedish late 80s/early 90s synthpop! Lyrics of this one is golden for anyone who understands Swedish, chessy in a good way.

1. Dotter "Little Tot"
I'm shivering with joy, truly engulfed in a feeling this will unite all fans in her quest for Dotterdam :disco:

oh look at her swanning in calling it a 'modulation'

Ha! Well I just tend to use key change to describe what happens at THAT moment in the song or an obvious shift upwards, but that’s just me and yes OBVIOUSLY they’re the same thing.

Another decent heat, isn't it?

HERE for Anton and Dotter. Rich sounds solid, Rena Rama Ding Dong is a GAG, 90-talet much better than what I had anticipated.

Patrik Jean's entry sounds exactly as anticipated/feared - anonymous spotify playlist-fodder. The Silence isn't much to shout home about either based on first impression.

Yeah, the reviews claiming Frida’s was a contender to win the whole thing were clearly written before they’d heard the other 27 songs.

01 - Little Tot - I am lying on the floor, texting @Suomi agreeing that I will boycott Eurovision too this year in protest against the human rights abuses Sweden has inflicted on Jessica Andersson as I mentally go over which friends I will be inviting to my watch parties in May. Little Tot comes on and I am suddenly unable to get up. Thankfully the postchorus happens, and I begin to make a sound that the assisted living staff downstairs mistake for the emergency alarm in the bathroom I sometimes pull when I'm bored

02 - The Silence - this is amazing but does anybody else have a mental image of Anna Bergendahl and Frida backstage on Saturday with Anna dressed up like Shirley Temple? "Okay curtain-puller - it's your time to shine! Oh it's too important I'll just do it myself"

03 - New Religion - obviously it's just The Weeknd verses with the chorus of Youngblood but crucially it's actually fun to listen to, unlike last time in 2014 when Anton entered a song that was essentially three minutes of passive aggression from John Lundvik that Christer still wouldn't let him enter yet ("yeah try singing this you little bitch!!!")

04 - Rich - Julia Alfrida's entire career has been leading up to this moment, and to her credit she has recognised this is her one chance at actually having one that doesn't require her to be a barista at the same time and entered something I would listen to by choice. But then I said that about Amanda Aasa, EKO and SMILO too and look how all those went.

05 - Tears Run Dry - I'm sorry - who told all these boys it was okay to start having emotions? Oh right yeah. Anyway I found this a pleasant experience, and did not resent the 0.0004 pence Spotify will no doubt send to be split six ways between the songwriters and The Mamas when they have to do backing vocals for this in May

06 - 90-talet - "Hey this Vem e som oss track is great," WAHL says to Sami, as Sami sends a tenth unsolicited dick pic to me on Grindr some time during the final last year (okay for these purposes imagine I'm still living in Zone 5 last year), "but wouldn't it be great if the production was better and he was having so much less fun?". No it would not. Sami leaves the house without saying anything and is too angry to speak when he returns an hour later to found out what WAHL has done

07 - Rena rama ding dong - So 7th makes it look like I don't like this and that's not quite right, I just know I shouldn't like this (once again - the secret to Melodifestivalen these days is not being put off by heat 1 because heats 2 and 3 are always where it's at). Anyway this is utterly fucking disgusting but I know deep down I'm not actually going to necessarily be skipping this every time it comes up on shuffle for the next two months, so let's call it a 6/10. I don't know about the one on the left's deal but does anyone else think the one on the right is just @COB in a wig

Frida - Yes I’m all for a good modulation at the chorus but this one comes out of nowhere and makes zero musical sense.
Given it's obviously the second chorus in the clip, I wonder if it might end up that the first chorus doesn't have a key change and the second one having one is the progression.

I doubt it, the chorus is just different to the verse and they’ve been glued together by the sound of it.

I am dying at this because I swear to Perrelli that I had the EXACT SAME THOUGHT SEQUENCE :D only mine was imagining how if this won Frida Green would mysteriously get coronavirus and Anna would step forward onto the Eurovision stage.

Oh no :eyes:
