It’s so frustrating here. We’ve vaccinated 70% of the population with one shot, yet nothing will open for two more weeks and then we have a 3 step plan that must be 21 days apart at the minimum. Which means we won’t get to step 3 till August (which will allow for some limited indoor activities).

It’s all so confusing and needlessly convoluted.

WELL, putting aside all of my (massively huge) DOUBTS about travelling abroad and booking a LUXURY long weekend getaway with super expensive restaurants booked, a wine tour and a food tour organised and paid for for Mr Sheena's impending 50th birthday has paid dividends, I CAN'T WAIT to go to Porto in two weeks tim...

OH

OH
I'm set for a wedding in Albufeira in late July. :(

I'm kind of annoyed at myself for actually thinking it was possible.

Thing is, I've bigged up we're doing something special now so I've got to try and work something else out. I really had gone the WHOLE HOG- 5* luxury hotel, the works. I don't know what to do- I only went for it because the UK was proving kinda impossible to do anything fancy and interesting enough within a reasonable budget.

ANYONE BEEN TO JERSEY LATELY?

I simply can't think what's caused these recent cases in Portugal...

Yeah I've written off going abroad this summer.

I really wanna get away, but with our budget I can't think what to do. I really wanna hit the Highlands up.

I was just starting to make Portuguese plans too given the way a few posters here were raving about it a few weeks ago. Ah well, New Forest it is then.

I am so fucking done. I've been seeing a guy in America since April last year. We met once for two weeks in October. I REALLY want to go there in July. We're both double vaccinated, everyone who is at risk in either of those two countries has now been offered the vaccine. At what point are we going to say 'look... it's not going to go away, we need to live life again? We've done everything we can, which is vaccinate people and reduce the risk, now we leave it up to them to make their decisions.'

I don't particularly care about going to America, I just want to be able to go and see the guy that I fell in love with.

I do understand that this is selfish. But I'm really really fucking done with it now. I've spent the last year doing everything they want, going into school unvaccinated because they wouldn't try and protect me from that risk - but they won't now let me go on a plane to America even if everyone has a negative COVID test in advance.

When do I just give up waiting and move on?

They will let you go on a plane if it is Amber though, you could do the quarantine in August before term starts no?

That sucks :( Hopefully now you've been double vaccinated it won't be long until you can get on a plane and get double pregnant.

Is the situation still the same in that cases are rising but those who are vaccinated aren’t ending up in hospital/intensive care? The last I heard Boris said all was still on track for full reopening on June 21st?

They're not talking about full reopening of flights though are they?

I really don’t know, darling. As far as I was aware 21st of June was getting rid of masks/social distancing and all restrictions but that doesn’t really make sense when they still have a traffic light system for travelling abroad. I don’t even think THEY know.

That’s never really been the case. Cases have only been over 3000 per day for a couple of weeks now and so it’s really too early to know if hospitalisations/deaths are going to go back up as well. The best data we have seems to suggest that double vaccination provides around 80% protection from serious illness, which means 20% of double vaccinated people could still be liable to suffer severe symptoms. I can’t help feeling that the 21st June opening should be cancelled and if anything we should be going back a few stages until everyone’s vaccinated.

Realistically, we can't have domestic restrictions lifted and leave the borders open. Whilst there are countries significantly worse than us, travel shouldn't be two way. The only safe way to do it is agreements between countries with equally harsh travel restrictions and vaccination at roughly herd immunity level.

It was over 5k cases today. Up 50 percent on last week, apparently? All I have heard is that it’s too early to say and we should know in the next week or 2, for well over a month now. I’m assuming we are still in the same boat of we don’t really know?

And generally, whilst vaccines will significantly reduce the amount of deaths and illness, they aren't 100% and if the spread gets too high it will find the people that are still vulnerable.

It also hampers the ability for the NHS to resume normal service if significant levels of staff and bedspace continues to be used for the virus. Whilst unlikely to overwhelm the NHS on its own anymore, it's still better to keep things to a minimum as much as possible for the other health service benefits

We don't know if deaths are going to go up again. It seems fairly likely that the government know that cases are going to keep going up but are pretending they don't because they don't want to cancel 'Freedom Day'. It's the Christmas relaxation all over again.

Have they disclosed how much more transmissible the Indian variant/Delta is? I know it is now the most dominant.

I'm not sure they can really know how much more transmissible it is with any precision. They can be fairly sure that it is more transmissible now, but anything with numbers is always going to be barely better than an educated guess.

Is @Cloud still around? I thought a lot of the information he posted to be really enlightening. Not what some want to hear, but if it is accurate then I think it should be posted.

I think we may owe Cloud a bit of an apology over telling him off about the pessimism...

His brand of information was ultra pessimistic. There was no balance.

He said he'd been banned from Reddit for the same!
