Has anyone consciously tried to soften/lose their accent, or has it been more of a natural thing due to living elsewhere or mixing with others?

Growing up council my original accent was Salford (think Shaun Ryder) so I had to consciously tone it down when we moved to Hertfordshire because all the cockerneys ringing the Prison couldn't understand my flat vowels. When I moved back up north twelve years later my accent returned immediately but became more Bolton than Salford. If I'm talking to a Manc on the phone my accent is different to when I'm talking to a Boltonian but to those not of this area they'd sound the same.

I've lost some of my accent to the point where I've had people ask me where I'm from, but I think it's because I changed the way I said certain sounds when I lived abroad and it's carried across. I worry sometimes that people think I'm being uppity or trying to sound posh when it's not a conscious thing now.

But my local friends would say I talk quite posh and hardly have an accent!

The more I've had to drink the broader I get. The "tha knows" and "f'ut" (as in "got f'ut catch buzz" aka got to catch the bus) come out when I'm proper slaughtered, I'm barely coherent to southerners then.

I don't even know what my accent is. When I'm in the north, everyone says I sound like I'm from the West Midlands. Down here, people say I sound Lancastrian. You'd not think I was born and raised in Johannesburg.
