LICENCE REVOKED - a Bond Themes sync playlist

there's something very 70s BOND THEME about Surrender. I feel like it could easily have come between The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only.

love the slide from the elegant verses to the bombastic big band chorus. it's better than that Sheryl Crow bore they went with!

Julie Rogers - You Only Live Twice
This isn't quite up there with the Nancy Sinatra song for me, but it's an interesting curio that attempts to reflect the film's now probably quite problematic Far East themes (mainly by having lots of GONGS).
I think they try to justify the racism in ‘You Only Live Twice’ by arguing that it’s at least better than ‘Live And Let Die’.

Esthero - Nearly Civilized
I'm not sure if anyone else will be into this as much as me - this is the theme song from the 2002 game 007: Nightfire, and is performed by Canadian singer Esthero. I could have put on the short version used in the game's opening, but I REALLY like the trip-hop vibe and orchestral flourishes of this track so I've included it in full for us all to luxuriate in. No video I'm afraid :(

I don't really pay attention, but I presume there's a plethora of online criticism of problematic bits of old Bond films?

parts of the instrumental in You Only Love Twice are the same as the Nancy song they went with - which one came first?

this kinda sounds like an earlier demo of what we eventually got. it's good though

@COB I'm still obsessed with Surrender - do you think the song was retitled when Sheryl's came along? "Tomorrow Never Dies" is in a much more obvious place in the chorus.
Yeah, I reckon it would've been known as TND if not for that ROTTEN GRASPING CROW (I'm kidding it wasn't up to her and she seems nice)

Johnny Cash - Thunderball
Johnny Cash recorded this rather literal summation of the film's premise, but was rejected in favour of Tom Jones. A shame, as it's very jaunty and I quite like the idea of there being a country Bond theme!

Thunderball is one of the worst Bond themes. maybe the worst. I'd happily have taken this JANGLY NONSENSE instead! the backing vox! :disco:

If I try to appreciate it as a bit campy it's less bad. With that angelic female vocal it's quite easy...

Dame Shirley Bassey - No Good About Goodbye
Now this is a strange case. According to David Arnold this was never intended as a potential Bond theme, but he WAS working on this song for DSB's 2009 album The Performance at the same time he was writing the Quantum of Solace score, and the song features the word "solace" quite prominently in the lyrics… coincidence, troll, or something else? Whatever it is, it's a lovely piece in the style of her Sixties themes - and wouldn't it have been quite a gag for her to return to the franchise after so long with this?

I don't even remember what the theme was. Alicia Keys? Shirley should have done it!
