Gender in language always confuses me when it comes to animals. Are you meant to bother with the specific scientific gender?
I was always a bit of a swot in school when I used to tell the teacher I had "deux CHATTES" as opposed to "deux chats"

Can't remember how it works in French tbh, here we are meant to refer to the animals based on the gender of each word ie flies, cockroaches, grasshoppers are all female grammatically so we use her and she for them. A cicada on the other hand can be both male or neutral. Cat is somewhat of an exception though because while the word referring to species is female there is also a word for male cats and cats are generally meant to be referred to based on their actual scientific gender. I think Spanish works the same way.

I get FAR too worried about misgendering dogs at work (I don’t give a shit about babies) to the extent I catch myself peering at their under carriages in a way that probably comes across as QUITE WEIRD.
