Do you care for Halloween?

Having said all of this, we're going to watch Scream for the first time in decades tonight for no reason other than it being Hallowe'en.
 
I've just seen four of our neighbours have made quite good efforts to Halloween up their houses. As I say I don't mind other people making an effort, so long as it's good.
 
It's still nonexistent here, it hasn't caught up so I have no experience of it.
I think it's cute in the way most holidays and traditions are, but I don't think I would be too involved in it if it was a tradition here.

I'm a little surprised.

Brighton used to be amazing, on Halloween weekend.
 
31 October is my Dad's birthday, so that's usually the priority anyways.

Having said that, I did have a couple of very fun Halloween nights in my 20s, getting dressed up and all. Overall, I do prefer Carnival quite a lot though. It's just more fun (especially in one of the big Carnival cities).
 
Love the time of the year but hate Halloween. It’s visually ugly and I dislike horror theme and gore in generall.

As for grown ups in fancy dress, I’d very much prefer Purim or carnival and wish it was a thing here instead of this.
 
It's fun for kids but adults dressing up can fuck off. "We're having a Halloween party, it's fancy dress" is code for "put me in the stocks and pelt me with dead dogs".
 
We put a couple of candles out, because we have too much chocolate and I WILL JUST EAT IT ALL if no one comes.

None of the little bastards have been tempted so far.

I always used to get chocolate in and no one EVER CAME :(
 
Carnival (and Mardi gras) is the last Tuesday before Lent (or something like that).
 
I like dressing up! But I'm not doing it this year so I didn't pick the option :tongueout: I love Halloween in general, needless to say.

Not experienced it in my new house yet. No one came down the last one, mainly due to it being ASBO central. This is a far more family friendly road.

I enjoyed getting free sweets as a child.

I don't really care for Halloween, but I have dressed up in recent history and I might carve a pumpkin. They seem like nice things, so whatever.
 
I've never carved a pumpkin and I'm PROPERLY SHIT at anything creative so I'm not convinced I'd be much cop at it, but I am tempted just cause I like things that light up! Ah well, maybe next year.
 
Trick or treating when I was young was fun because you never knew which houses would just tell you to FUCK OFF

these days I think the kids get told not to visit a house unless it has a pumpkin outside. We've gone from a trickle of visitors to absolute zero in the last four years, and I can see them all outside right now.

Purim, (Hebrew: “Lots”) English Feast of Lots, a joyous Jewish festival commemorating the survival of the Jews who, in the 5th century bce, were marked for death by their Persian rulers. The story is related in the biblical Book of Esther.

So Carnival "season" in Germany (especially in Cologne and several other cities along the river Rhine) basically starts on 11 November (at 11.11 am) and lasts all the way until the Tuesday before Lent (February/March the year after).

11 November is already a slightly bigger day in some cities. Then you have the Carnival season with gatherings and sessions (often also broadcast on TV) which is basically an evening of politics and society being ROASTED. But this is really only for the hardcore carnival people who make it a hobby for several months and stuff.

The majority of the public really participates in the 6 crazy days leading up to Lent: starting off on Thursday (literally "Old Women's Carnival"), peaking on Sunday and Monday with parades through the cities and late nights in the pubs, bars and clubs and wrapping up on Tuesday. When I was still studying / when I worked at uni, I was basically drinking for a week (some days more, others less) and almost constantly in costume.

You'd plan for it, you'd spend a lot of time with your friends. It's corny as hell sometimes but also somewhat rooted in traditions and something to look forward to at the end of the bleak wintertime.

Having said that, I'm still struggling with the idea of being part of this again after the past 18 months:

Never liked Halloween, don't get the fuss

I feel so grateful this time of year to live in a flat and not have to answer the door to a load of snotty kids I've never seen before wearing bits of plastic and stupid facepaint and I'm expected to hand over chocolate. I don't even give my chocolate to people I LIKE!

And I hate fancy dress too, so that's THAT :D
 
The one good thing is that when it's OVER we're allowed to start thinking about Christmas properly.

I like it in general. It's silly novel fun. Even if I don't do anything for it.

Annoying children aside, I find most people who "hate" holidays just do so cuz they wanna have an "opinion".

Eh. It's fun for kids. I'm currently on holiday in Portugal and the staff in the hotel have decorated the place and been in costume since Friday.
 
Look at this disgusting holiday discrimination. Y'all leave Halloween alone!

What would you call something like Chanukah or Ramadan that you don't get time off for, but it still a real "holiday" for some people

As much as it's become massive here now, similar to the US, we definitely don't see it as a holiday. It's just a commercial day for parties and dressup.

I don't see how it is a holiday anyway, which are based on either religious festivals or tributes to important/historical people and events. Plus a holiday to me is when you get a day off. If they want to give us a day off for Halloween, I might celebrate it then!
