The War in Ukraine

Why is RT still on Freeview? I’m agog.
I did read a take that the government shouldn’t ban RT because the retaliation would be to block the BBC in Russia. The latter having a much larger audience in Russia than the minute audience RT has in the UK. I’m not sure how valid that view is but I would amazed if RT had more than handful of viewers here.

Interesting side story. This is a fantastic opportunity to return the favour after years of Russia's bullshit in the information wars. How do western sources break Putin's great wall of censorship and propaganda though?

I do wonder how any British journalist working for RT in the UK right now can reconcile that with their conscious. If they had any moral fibre they'd have quit by now.

I think most British journalists' morals are LOW FIBRE.

No one:

I sincerely hope there is a reckoning for the journalists, commentators, politicians and self-certified experts who have lauded Putin to serve their own petty and mean spirited agendas - from Trump to Tucker Carlson to Farage. That’s just the Anglosphere. I am sure there are others elsewhere.

No one else kind of panicking about the nuclear escalations?

All I can think about at the moment is "I don't want to survive a nuclear war, and I kind of want something in place as a contingency if one starts"

So far any reaction to this has been to silence me for "fear mongering"

I think the way your plans tend to conclude with a suicide plan make it difficult for people to co-sign on them

Is that a parliamentary majority or a public majority? I find it hard to believe it's the latter and the former is hardly a 'referendum' is it?

I'm not panicking. I'm fairly confident nuclear weapons will never be used in a world where multiple countries host such devices.
Hope so. It's just that all the Mutually Assured Destruction stuff depends on some level of rationality, and we seem to now have a Putin who is acting very irrationally and allegedly with senility involved so that's what has me worried that one escalation will lead to another

I mean, I'm not suggesting anyone else should. If anything, perhaps mentioning the idea was a cry for help from someone who may be thinking more clearly (so to just effectively get a slap for it is unhelpful). But, as the results of my google search suggested, it might not be a great idea to have some kind of "easy euthenasia device" because sure, to me I think it's quite rational to prefer the idea of a painless death to one limping around a wasteland, possibly blind, slowly dying of radiation poisoning and starving. But, if things don't go that far, you still have that thing around that could make a bad day unnecessarily extreme in a bad frame of mind.

What a fucking joke, FIFA are cunts.
Ukraine crisis: Russia told not to compete under national flag

The standard first response from everyone - and then everyone (... well, maybe) tightens the screws until they're out or so offended by the "baseless, unlawful and completely inappropriate sanctions" that they withdraw from everything themselves (with Belarus following one day later). Of course, it would also help if e.g. the IOC wouldn't just recommend to all federations to sanction Russian and Belarusian members but maybe look into taking the Russian and Belarusian Olympic Committee down a peg or five.

I know this doesn't seem like enough (especially from those federations with plenty of questions marks) and honestly, I'd like quicker and more thorough sanctions, too. But realistically speaking and looking beyond my own frustration with all this, sports won't outpace politics in Europe at this point because people have been too keen to separate sports from politics (lol!) until very recently. But hopefully, that will change in terms of responsibility and taking a stance. It certainly feels like a watershed moment in many ways.

Putin is just playing a game, and all he's done is told his boys with the nukes to be on standby if the west launches theirs, its essentially propaganda, trying to justify his aggression by making out he's the victim. It also serves as a tool to try and demoralise us, don't let it work, but more importantly, don't let it cause you such mental anguish. Turn off the news, go outside and get some air. Reach out if you're struggling.

Not Liz Truss causing the nuclear apocalypse

I think it was yesterday she said she was happy for Britons to go and join the Ukrainian forces, only for the Defence Minister (a veteran himself) to have come and shut her down. Not sure she quite understood the consequences of a NATO state encouraging its civilians to go and fight.
