The War in Ukraine

I think this is the first time in my life where I have started to wake up with a sense of dread and not wanting to look at my phone or turn on the TV. I think someone mentioned it earlier and now especially with this nuclear plant attack last night, it does seem Putin is going next level to try and antagonise the West as much as he can and drawing them in. Really quite scary.

I’m trying to work out why I don’t feel like that. I don’t know if it’s a reaction to the usual gay hyperbole here, there are some of us who suddenly become military strategists and analysts / political pundits / Eurovision demographic experts when the opportunity presents itself, and it’s sort of switched me off of really taking news seriously on Moopy.

Added to the people who are clearly having trouble with all this stress just getting whipped up further by these insights, however speculative they might be, and running for the nuclear bunkers.

It just makes me feel worried for everyone and doubtful about what the actual situation really IS.

Not blaming anyone or individuals but I admit I was thinking of unsubscribing from this thread this morning. I avoid Twitter for most of the same reasons but the clickiest baitiest tweets are being posted here anyway

i have mixed emotions about writing this but there are a lot of appalling opinions in here ("we should declare war on russia" is outrageous) and i feel like i have to voice my disagreement. any voice that is for war i cannot agree with.

i have been avoiding the thread mostly, so apologies if this has already been said by anyone but as part of this community i feel like i should. this conflict has been years in the making. russia has warned multiple times that the expansion of nato toward it is unacceptable - there have repeatedly been warnings about this by people both on the right like kissinger and people on the left like chomsky. yet this is what certain actors have been pushing for again and again because resources/ideological zeal.

what is the result? war. billions for weapons. more division. death.

this is yet another us proxy war with russia and i think the glorification of zelenskyy, who helped drive his country into is, is misguided.

Also just FYI nuclear power plants don’t go into mushroom clouds if that’s what you’re worrying about. They can meltdown and the smoke can spread fallout like Chernobyl did and Fukushima almost did.

I guess they’re trying to capture them to control the power supply more than irradiate the country - especially the parts they are occupying

I get what you are saying, Im certainly not into hyperbole or being alarmist, for my part its just expressing a sense of foreboding that Ive never experienced before, not even with Covid.

This thread is the only thing I will look at it re: what is happening, for mental health purposes. Moopy presents information in a camp yet informative way that I feel all news outlets should aspire to. Some people cope by getting really involved and wanting to read lots, and some people cope by disassociating.

Even just peeking on here though I am still walking around like

@Suomi put it beautifully but I probably think Moopy IS my main news source for this reason. You don't get such in depth opinion pieces on generic news sites and really it's the opinions where the information and the capacity to learn lies.

This is probably the main way in which I keep up to date with what is going on too, but it certainly isn’t helped by certain people being so eager to share and sensationalise anything that can be interpreted as the beginning of the end of the world.

If it weren’t for how grave the situation is I’d almost think they were excited by it.

I used to worry irrationally about nucular war (and asteroids) as a child, so I've grown up consciously trying to be rational in the face of a disaster. My take is this:

- We are not on the brink of nucular war
- It is, however understandable that people are worried about the threat of nucular war, since it's the first time any of us will have experienced even the remotest threat of one
- NATO absolutely should not intervene directly
- The world is not, however, just sitting idly and watching. The response internationally has been incredible
- Russia will not invade another country
- The war has gone appallingly for Russia so far, and has been a catastrophic error of judgement
- The only country which will suffer in the long term because of this whole shitshow is Russia
- Nucular power plants don't explode the minute they go on fire or sustain structural damage, or they wouldn't be allowed to build them
- A lot of really entertaining shit about Russia, the Tories and Brexit will come out off the back of this
- Putin deserves to - and will - die a violent death

I have no reason to change my opinion on any of this, so while I'm angry and hateful about what's happening, I don't have a sense of dread or hopelessness.

Russia, like any other superpower, feels entitled to its own imagined sphere of interest and will do anything to stop what they see as the enemy trying to gain territories within their sphere. It’s naive to not expect other powers doing the same (it’s just that the west does it in a more refined way, the US doesn’t invade countries in Latinamerica, they stage coup d’etats instead). This is what I was trying to say in the beginning of this thread.

Howerver, none of that matters if the affected soverign nations aren’t interested in being part of that sphere. Russia could demand and threaten how much they want but they they have no right to decide the fate of other nations and they certainly deserve the harshest possible sanctions until they withdraw and stop demanding such nonsense.

I don’t know if I’m being naive here, but as far as I know NATO didn’t approach Ukraine, it was the other way round? The Ukriainans (and Beylorussians) want to be part of the liberal West and, just like the Taiwanese and people in Hong Kong, don’t want to live in an authoritarian state and therefore should get the support they need and the West shouldn’t have to ”respect” Russia’s (or China’s) territorial demands.

You forgot to mention QoL Zelinsky :kim:

(But I agree with every other point)

I somewhat agree. But with people in here sharing tweets that are already out there, I just treat those posts the same way as if I were treat the tweet if I read the tweet on twitter. Don't give them too much mind until it becomes clear the source is verified and other sources are tweeting it.

It is a bit of blessing to not have a personality that hits panic straight away though and not everyone has that, so people should be mindful about what they share, yes.

I tend to only share the good stuff, mainly because Russia’s campaign of misinformation means I instinctively mistrust any bad news about the war.

I love that I'm waking up to Moopy analysing itself as a source of news in the wake of all this.

I did watch the news last night and it was just horrible and switched off, but I do feel the need to stay connected to events. Moopy isn't the worst way, as its often presented in bite size chunks with that Moopy wink of self awareness, albeit with a slight fear behind smile. We're also a mostly pretty intelligent site. So long as you know to triangulate for a wider more verified view.

If it does get sensational, that's just the nature of the sources we're presented with. So long as we offer the tools to switch off or support those finding it more anxiety inducing, I don't see why we shouldn't be sharing and discussing some of the hard hitting or fear mongering stuff, even it is to tear it to shreds.

So long as the debates remain respectful, Moopy can work as a really great place to test and form opinions. It's not like any of us are experts on the matter. I'm always ready to develop a hot new take on a subject ready to take into the wider world.

Surely the fact that Russia is prepared to engage militarily in the name of imperialism is all the more reason for smaller countries to want to join a defensive pact? Ukraine is a sovereign nation that can make the decisions it wants, including whether it wants to join defensive (and in the case of the EU, economic) pacts with that could help protect it from a well resourced and not entirely rational (potential) aggressor.

It's all fine saying you don't want war, but neither did Ukraine, and neither did NATO. Putin may claim he is being driven by NATO expansion, and times his invasions to ensure that countries can't join it, but ideologically he is driven by expanding Russian territorial borders regardless of the independence of the countries he is expanding in to. Denying them entry into NATO would be and was just appeasement, which is wrong for very obvious reasons.

I've got a ton of 'on the ground' twitter accounts, although there's now a lot of cross sharing. Popular Front and Atlas News are good ones, if you're interested. I'm following Euromaiden Press and Kyiv Independent on Twitter and then topping up with MSM but usually only as part of my morning news read.

Weirdly, as much as there's a lot of horrific shit going on, I'm not that overwhelmed or stressed about it. I do think the global response is about right, I'm of the opinion Ukraine will win this war through sheer psychology and the overwhelming feeling is that Russia totally underestimated this in terms of it being a 2-3 day offensive.

I don't think Putin is likely to nuke but after heavy shelling/thermobaric weapon use waving his finger over the big red button is likely all he has left, so I expect we'll hear more of it before this is over.

Yeah I really, really don’t think this is one of those ‘both sides are equally to blame’ things.

Putin isn’t just ideologically opposed to Ukraine joining NATO. He’s ideologically opposed to Ukraine’s right to exist.
Quite. I really resent the notion of ‘Putin warned Ukraine not to get to close to NATO’ etc. as though it was any of his business, for one second, what path Ukraine chose to take as a people. Let’s quit with the idea that he ever had even the remotest of grievances. Russia could have integrated itself, even on a semi-detached basis, with the western world if it wanted to and indeed, for a while, appeared it might. Putin chose not to because he is a bully, a psychopath and a despot.

Yeah I really, really don’t think this is one of those ‘both sides are equally to blame’ things.
To be honest, I think that there is some wrongdoing on the invaded side too. And usually, this is true to some extent in most conflicts. But to be specific on this, I mean that taking in that nazi battalion in the actual forces of the country, for me is a huge no no. Regardless of whether the enemy was afraid of them, regardless of their skills as a war machine, there aren't good and bad nazis, they are all evil. I understand that they saw them as a convenience to the country's resistance, I understand they were insecure for their country's safety, I can understand they thought they were alone and the west wouldn't care, I sympathize with all that, but taking them in legitimizes them and that's wrong cause there can be only one place for fascists, jail. This being said my understanding is that the invader who wanted to push their own agenda and interests on the area, used this unacceptable mistake to create a distorted overgeneralized image of them back home to get people on board with it and kind of projected the same rationale to the west thinking it could work just as well as home and could provide the legitimization that it lacked to intervene invade and interfere. But it didn't, cause the propaganda mechanisms couldn't work just as well outside their own bubble. So here we are now.

Since this escalated last week I've probably come to moopy first for headlines and opinions, and then looked deeper to verify or round opinions out. Yes, there have been times where someone may have posted something and I've wondered how particularly helpful it has been, considering how anxious some people (including myself) are or have been, but I think that's inevitable and we all have different tolerances for that kind of thing, in all areas.

We have the ability to ignore threads and forums now, and I think there has to be a degree of personal responsibility and choosing to opt out, if the way moopy is presenting it isn't perhaps the way you like.

I mean, I hope everyone’s main information source is the news/newspapers and not Moopy. :basil:

Well that’s not quite what I was saying, a lot of us spend a lot of time here and probably credit it with a bit more authority than some media outlets though, insofar as lack of agenda.

Just worried about a few posters here who sound incredibly stressed out by thread, sue me.

I see that despite me stressing that I’m not coming for anyone (especially not in particular) some people are still plucked, ho hum

I come to Moopy first - as I've said before, we've developed into something that handles the serious stuff very well. We're a reliable filter, for me. My only frustration is that Twitter is blocked at work but I;m as guilty of dropping tweets as anyone and that's not Moopy's fault.

I am sorry if anything I have said in this thread has been triggering for anyone. The truth is I am also quite stressed and anxious about this. Sometimes I use Moopy as a safe space to 'think out loud' and almost like putting my thoughts onto paper (as it were) but I should think of others too and how my words may be interpreted. Apologies again.

It’s a shit time so none of us should feel bad about being open with our thoughts and feelings. This is a lovely supportive community and that is at its most valuable right now.

Putin won’t use nukes. I doubt he would even if NATO did intervene in Ukraine.

He’ll threaten it, for sure, but at his core he’s an imperialist, wedded to the idea of a glorious Russia with him as supreme leader. This whole war is him trying to build a legend around himself and being the guy that oversaw the total nuclear destruction of the motherland doesn’t factor in to that legacy. I imagine if anything he’s frustrated that his only real leverage would result in him failing entirely in everything he wanted to achieve.

I tend to look at Moopy first when I wake up, to see if anything absolutely heartbreaking has happened, before diving in and looking at proper news sources
I look at Moopy when I wake up, but I didn’t open this thread. I also didn’t read the news. I like to be informed, but I don’t get anything out of starting the day in a bad mood. There’s nothing I can do about any wars (or anything really) in the first hour of the day

Kind of wish NATO weren't so stubborn about being open to anyone. They're supposed to be peacekeepers not an empire. I get they want to protect any country who wants it but if getting too close to Russia means shit like this happens then what's the point? Why not talk with Ukraine and ask them to remain independent with a promise from both sides not to expand or interfere into them. Bit late now but..

Anyway

The "reassurance seeking" part of me is grateful for this post.

The part of me that knows such seeking is bad for anxiety, knows not to read any following comments for now that may be picking it apart

Same, am sorry too if I have caused anxiety to someone, and I understand it if I have and I apologize, I too had a moment yesterday that I wanted to just disconnect from any source of information and not get any news but then again the world isn't gonna fix itself if I hide under my duvet. And it's not gonna fix itself if we talk about it either, but at least it feels a little better to share with someone what's going on in my head. But apart from that I do enjoy reading what everyone has to say because it's not news in the sterilized sense, you are giving me several layers of information and feelings and insight and points of view.
