funky does Kylie: "DISCO" (2020)

06 Disco Down - OT: there's a really good handbag house song called Disco Down from the same year which is fucking fabulous, but it's not this. Anyway, this opens a bit Daft Punky, but quickly goes back to poppers oclock. Why does this album make me think of @Sheena dancing in his dodgy local gay bars that he always entertained us with back in the DAY? I guess I'm being transported back to noughties quite a bit here. This is also quite accessible and actually as I'm listening actually sounds a bit familiar... I don't think this was a single was it? Gay as Christmas, but it's anthemic. I can see a really tragic drag queen miming along badly to this.

06 Kookachoo - this was a bit of an "oh" moment when it started also. Was this WILLIAM ORBIT? Was it pitched for Austin Powers II? I guess she had to have another go at Madonna's direction :side-eye: in all seriousness, you can't deny that Kylie doesn't put her everything into making a sound her own, it's like she's able to KYLIEFY any genre :disco: Again I can't really deny that this is a bit of a BOP, even though it's not MY bop, it's still a successful bop.

This album is so far NOT A DISASTER. But it is VERY VERY GAY.

04 Please Stay - oh it's Enrique again. So this is one of those singles that I do recall not liking at the time, and I still kinda don't. The basic dancey poppiness of it is all fine, but the flamenco and maraccas... no. Just feels like a miss. Soz.


In a nerdish and mildly interesting aside, this has only 2M streams on spotify, while the other singles have 37M, 18M, 6M and 13M. Not sure why, just thought it odd.

00 Bittersweet Goodbye - this genuinely sounds like a Christmas carol. I don't get a single bit of it. Where it sits on the album, the pace of it, her lifeless vocal. I mean it's sung well enough, but it sounds so through the motions.

When does the choir kick in?
 
08 Butterfly - oh thank FUCKETY FUCK :square: this sounds a bit more housey than her other dance tracks on the album. It actually doesn't sound like anything housey from the time, it sounds like a house song from 1995, but I'll still take it. It sounds like a 10 just following the last track. The middle eastern licks in the second verse are a bit ODD and random, but overall this is still a welcome return to something I can relate to. I like the energy of this. Also this is definitely the first time I've ever heard this.

Both I think! Also I doubt this is one you'll want to delve into given the scores, but the version from the KYLIEX2008 tour is amazing and features one of the ultimate Kylie QoL moments at the end:

06 Under The Influence Of Love - this is camp as fuck and I quite like it! First thing that struck me is that this is the first out and out pop song of the entire album. It's the closest link to 90s Kylie I've heard so far. There's a lot going on in the production, but I'm OK with it. It does, if I can be critical, feel like she's phoning it in on some of these songs... considering she rebirthed her career on the back of this album, it doesn't exactly scream pivotal or significant in terms of her legacy. Compared to so much of her 90s music which was so immediate and relevant... I dunno. There's a decent mix here overall but something seems a bit OFF...

It's more what I'd expect from a second album song. It has more of an evolution of sound, a classic late 80s sound than her other full on SAW singles.

02 Turn It Into Love - oh this must be the song @RJN is talking about? This sounds like classic camp drama. You can hear Steps singing this. It's all getting a bit samey for me now and this is the sort of SAW melodrama I don't care for. It sounds so interchangeable, like it could be Sonia singing, or Sinitta. Sorry fans if this is a favourite, I don't get it. Saying all that I'm not sure why it wasn't a single, it has all the ingredients.

08 Light Years - Oh she does love to (sometimes) end with a title track! So this is good. I feel like I've heard this SOMEWHERE. What's interesting about this is that it sounds like what I expect the Fever album to sound like: darker, more experimental, more electro (I could be wrong). If so what a FABULOUS segueway for her and for me...

Nothing worse than hanging the same old drum (:eyes:) but imagine not liking Turn It Inro Love. The WRONGNESS :shock:

I remember listening to the debut album for the first time on compact cassette (:disco:) and THAT turning up and my thinking OH MY FUCKING DAYS THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER

How do you see each songs stream tally? I can only see the top five on each artists page, and chart-mad me would really like to scroll through each song by rubbish pop stars to compare stats :disco:
