I don't think Ukraine can protect him now either. It isn't monopolising the news the way it was a month ago. Is parliament back next week? Is that when we'll hear if letters are being put in again?

From Johnson's point of view, it is quite possible that his only hope of survival now is an election that he miraculously wins, since I believe he has the power again to call one at his leisure.
 
The timing for this is quite good now that Ukraine isn’t a new topic, right?
 
Somebody smarter than me (put a pin in the phonebook) will let us know if, in absence of direct resignation, Johnson would be eligible for a recall in Uxbridge

No.

Prison sentence (less than a year as longer is automatic loss of being an MP), suspension for two weeks or more from parliament, or convicted for lying about expenses.
 
I guess it theoretically could a matter for the Committee on Standards for MPs, but (a) I doubt it would lead to a suspension and (b) I have a feeling ministers can argue that it’s a matter for the ministerial code instead (i.e. a matter for the PM himself(!)).
 
Michael Fabricant on the BBC right now comparing this to nurses and teachers having a drink after work in the staff room.
 
A few Conservative MPs have (anonymously) been giving us their reaction to this afternoon's news.

One Welsh MP tells the BBC: "Support for Ukraine has been outstanding - to defenestrate the PM at this moment would be unbelievable folly."

Asked if the PM could survive being fined by the police, a senior backbencher says: “For any other politician, this would not be survivable.

"Rishi may be done for, he [the PM] will try to brazen it out, but this is a big thing, people knew others would be fined, but him being fined himself, well looking at the WhatsApp groups I think people are still trying to process this.”

An MP from the 2019 intake said they were going to have "a long think" about whether Johnson should step down.

"There is now another cabinet minister [Sunak] involved, which leaves Liz Truss [the foreign secretary] as the alternative. We have got to have the best person running the country, and if he does go what does that mean?"
 
In short Sunik's going to go and Johnson stay because Truss is a terrible option.
 
I think he'll get away with it. Now Sunak's gone down there's no viable alternative so his party won't turn on him. Zero sense of duty or morality at all.
 
I wonder if they knew this was coming... after the initial 20 fines they must have had a fair idea it would happen at some point?

I don't think that's quite true. Truss is popular amongst the membership and, I assume, enough backbenchers to have a good shot. There are also current outsiders like Hunt who the (remaining) Tory old guard would likely rally behind. Getting to 54 from those contingents seems pretty plausible
 
Truss is indeed popular among the membership, mainly because they all still have a boner for Thatcher and she's giving them flashbacks but IDS was popular among the membership too (as was William Hague, I think).

He hasn't hung on this long to go at the issuance of a 50p fine. He'll argue it's basically just a parking ticket.

The thing that actually makes me sick is the number of Tory MPs going "but Ukraine... it's not the time". It's not surprising that party loyalty & election winning is all they have on their mind, but it still fucking stinks.
 
They really need to proportion these fines using a percentage like "30% of the last declared income for the last tax year" for EVERYONE. :eyes:
 
Would love to know what hospitals and schools Michael Fabricant is referring to. Most would discipline their staff for drinking in the workplace even if it was after their shift.

Of course we changed PM during WW2.

He's more a Chamberlain than a Churchill.
