Old TOTP (BBC4) (1 Viewer)

I don;t know how The Rockingbirds ended up on TOTP from "The Fred EP" but I can't imagine anyone other than BBC execs wanting to see this instead of Flowered Up or Saint Etienne.
 
I'd forgotten how successful "People Everyday" had been for Arrested Development. Still sounds good to my aging ears.
 
Yes, that episode with People Everyday, Free Your Mind and Hello (Turn Your Radio On) was exceptionally strong.

Well I think they were the same episode - we watch them in pairs so I may be confused.
 
Are we out of the wanker presenters holding episodes back period now?
 
Whoever didn't programme Vanessa Paradis to come straight out of the Supremes instead of Michael Bolton should have got the sack.

Well they've cut back the staff but we still have Tony Dortie and Mark Franklin - they seem to be alternating so, yes, it looks like it.

Just looking at Wikipedia now - seems like we've got them until 1994. Apparently it's only them rotating until then, except for weeks with guest presenters.

And then at the start of '94, the Radio One DJs return. Some of the old guard, plus the likes of Lisa I'Anson and Jo Whiley.
 
The lyrics to "never Let Her Slip Away" may have seemed romantic at the time but they are serious red flag stalker territory.

OK, so we should get all of '93? I hope that the various guest presenters can't prevent their episodes being shown. I think if they're regarded as guests rather than presenters, we should be OK.

I hope so - because looking further the guest presenters carried right through after the return of the DJs in 94, and there are LOADS of them.

I fear for some of the more unusual choices like Chris Eubank. But let's see.
 
I like Neil Diamond but he looks like they defrosted him from 1975 for this.
 
Malcolm McLaren presenting Confide In Me is my first concern.

And perhaps then someone will retitle the youtube clip which lists it as 'Live TOTP France', just because he introduced her and reacted to the performance in French :D

The amount of covers on the second episode from Friday. I can't believe they had Jason Donovan on twice doing that.

SOMEBODY sounded quite OFF on the chorus of Could It Be Magic. I'm assuming the lovely Jason Orange's mic wasn't on so will blame Howard. Early Take That energy was something though, and seeing Barlow suffer through it is amusing.
 
I also have no memory of this KWS-Trammps team up.

Always a pleasure to see Madonna wandering in with the balloons in that video.
 
Did Heaven 17 exist when this remix was a hit? No Martyn Ware but 2 anonymous blokes at the back? Anyway, shite compared to the original.
 
That Madness single flopped. Clearly down a couple of members for that performance as well.
 
Easy to forget what a strong move it was for the opening verses of "I Will Always Love You" to be entirely acappella. Radio DJs of the time didn't like that. Of course, they didn't get a choice in the matter.
 
EMF's "real music" phase was just a bit unmemorable. I couldn't have hummed this with a gun to my head and I actually liked them.
 
"The Impossible Dream" was probably Carter USM's worst single. It doesn't even come close to coming off. And, again, I actually liked them.
 
If they'd leaned into it and gone showbiz in tuxedos and backing vocalists etc, then might have got away with it. Might.
 
"Celebration" was a low point for Kylie, I think. It's just so mechanically cold. No joy.
 
...and Donovan's horrid "As Time Goes By" straight afterwards.

Rod Stewart actually sounds good next to this. At least it's a good song and Stewart actually sounds like it means something to him - compared to the covers from Carter, Kylie and Jason, it actually stands out.
 
Step It Up still sounds decent. Many a student night went up a gear when this went on for a good 12 months. Even got the shoegazers (i.e. me) on the floor.

I'd glad dance megamixes and re-recording any old shit as a club "anthem" eventually died out.

A song lyrically demanding joy isn't going to work when it's so evidently being performed by someone fulfilling a contractual obligation. And she clearly didn't have enough interest to fake it.

These episodes are fucking dreadful. No wonder everyone was so depressed at the time. The Tories won the election, the weather was shite and this is the crap with which we're meant to "celebrate" Christmas.
 
"Could It Be Magic?" - the beginning of Robbie Williams as the breakout star from Take That?
 
They were quicker than I remembered to start mugging dear Freddie Mercury's corpse. Poor soul.
