Surely Russians can't be falling for that narrative and realise it's a humiliation.
 
We're all of a sudden getting reports from Russian generals of the Russian losses and Ukrainian successes.

Is it the case, that this just the insane Russian misinformation machine deliberately confusing with mixed messaging or is this an emerging split between the army and the government? I rather suspect the latter and therefore wonder how this will play out in terms of Putin's future.
 
It definitely seems to be the latter. There have always been doubts about Russia's abilities from the people actually informed in the regime, and these past few days have made that undeniable.

Hopefully, we're at the point where Putin starts acting rationally, or the people around him try and get rid of him.
 


This is surely big news if confirmed as Kherson is located on the right bank.

Apparently the Russians want to withdraw with all their weapons intact. Not sure their negotiating hand is particularly strong though.
 
It feels like it's been overshadowed by relentless coverage of The Queue however more Russian war crimes are being uncovered. The discovery of a mass grave containing at least 440 people in Izyum is possibly only the tip of the iceberg.

I think what they uncover in Izyum may be just as, if not more horrifying than what happened in Bucha. :(
 
Her twitter account only has a handful posts from 2016, nothing later and only 1k followers. Something seems sus here.
 
I've been looking into the recent Ukrainian land grab. It really was an unplanned opportunistic moment.

When Ukraine started tactically focussing on Russian positions in the south near Kherson, Russia moved their strongest soldiers south to defend. This left the North with a rag tag selection of untrained old men and prisoners who fled faster than the Ukraine could chase them.

The Russian army is just so weak they didn't have enough men to defend the north and south. The Ukraine just took saw an opportunity which paid off. The war is far from over, but it does appear to have moved into a third stage with Ukraine at a sudden advantage.

Their main target in the south is to reclaim Kherson an all important port city. Their current tactic is to encircle and cut Russians off from supply routes on the nearby river

Similarly in the north, they now have the ability to heavily disrupt the main supply route from Russia, with their improved position.

It's been the most interesting week of the war since it began. That's not even considering the absolute horror of the hundreds of graves that are being discovered. Also with winter on the horizon, things will likely take a grim turn.

The remaining Russian controlled regions will be holding 'referendums' this weekend on whether they want to be absorbed into Russia. :manson:

Totally legitimate of course.

Surely a sign of admitted defeat (regarding the strategy so far)?

I almost wish Nato/the West would join in for real now and get this over with. :/

Mobilisation is basically declaring it to be a war. Not sure if that changes anything realistically.

I presume he's either saving face right now or this is just another step down the line of delusion.

Presumably. Or at least you can't do anything other than tell yourself that.
 
Not really sure what the aim of it is. Most likely infuriation that the West have been scuppering his plans. Alternatively he's trying to provoke all out war.
 
Presumably these sham referendums are of more concern right now? When they inevitably go Russia’s way, then any attacks within those territories using Western weapons are all the justification Putin needs to do what the hell he likes…
 
On the other hand it does seem the tide of opinion is turning in Russia. How much that is getting down to the public at large I have no idea. There's a lot to unpick right now.

It’s never a good idea to dismiss the threats of a madman. That said, his promise to send 300,000 additional troops into Ukraine seems… fanciful.

 
I imagine 300,000 reservists being mobilised is likely to turn more people against the war. Supporting the war and being willing to fight in it are two different things.

Given the challenges supplying their existing forces in Ukraine, how do they expect to equip these reservists?
